  • 0:40 wtf

  • I remember buying this in '97, so I was about 9 when I first played it. Back then, I seriously hated this game. I thought it was boring and a waste of time and money.

It wasn't until I played it again, 14 years later, that my opinion of the game changed dramatically. The game design and concepts were so different from anything else out there. Even today, I have yet to find any game like this. I just didn't appreciate what I was playing back then. Im so glad I gave it another chance. Love it!

  • fuck you you suck at making videos

  • @TheFlyinCow get pist faggot

  • Love the fact that you commented the loading time when on the Playstation version.

  • Why Can't xbox360 release the myst series on the xbox marketplace? I would also like to play 7th guest and rebel assault again

  • in my opinion it's idiots like you that killed adventure games

  • boring BORING RAGE get out of you're FUCKING ADD FPS metabolic heart rate this game came out 14 years ago it was stunning it had detail and atmosphere that still makes people want to live there It was amazing and i still don't understand why people complain about frame rate i run it on an 11 year old computer and goes fine As for the 3d thing and the movement pace it made you stop and smell the roses you know really soak it up and enjoy it

  • it was made in 1997 - of COURSE its going to be slow

  • guys this guy has a point, i LOVE this game, On PC. i have never played it on a mac, but let me tell you, the PlayStation was slower then a slug. the loading time was awful. But as i said, the PC one Rocks!

  • This is acually the best game I have ever played. I have acually beaten it too! I am so proud!

  • Seriously, get back to your gaming on hos, action movies, rap, and getting drunk, and direct your stupid fucking opinions away from Riven - the greatest work of art ever created.

  • asshole you are ,,,thats the most incredible mind game ever ,,, and you dumb ass wanna go quick ,,,, whats wrong with you ,,,you are not one of us ,,, you will never understant get a Q.I. .... I MAKE ALL THE SERIES ,,,, AND YOU KNOW WHAT ,,, YOU SUCK HARD ,,,, Dopey ....

  • were you seriously playing this on PlayStation? What the hell is wrong with you?

  • Bad review

  • I remember playing Myst on my Mac[LCII?] as a 9 year old kid, it was the first game with '3D' graphics I had ever played and was completely absorbed. It was incredibly difficult and progress was slow, but after months of perservation I eventually cracked it. It gave a sense of satisfaction that very few games have been able to surpass since.

  • Riven is one of my all-time favorite PC games.

Disliking the video because of the ads and intro.

  • "Come on, Monica, take a ride on my cable car."

  • You dont fall in between, your way in the bottem, out of the boundries, your just terrible.

  • I bought this game years ago, but you can still download it at

    NitroRoms !!!

  • its out for iphone! i just downloaded it.

  • @ashermadan What you opinion on the iphone version game ?

  • @c7roy its very good, the graphics look amazing but the thing is like 1.5 gigs! 1.5 GIGS! It takes more than 3 gigs to install. if youre willing to give that much space, then go for it, if not, then dont but youd be missing out.

  • @ashermadan Whats so big about 1.5gigs? i have 1.5TB total.

  • @YourComputerExpert you have 1.5 TB on your iPhone? Come on man, I was pretty clear. Most people own either an 8 gig iPhone or 16 gig iPhone. 1.5 gigs out of that is huge! is this clear enough?

  • @YourComputerExpert

    more llike 1.5 inches

  • if only there was realRiven

  • When you play games like this, it makes you feel like it's real life because you can't see yourself in it. You can only see your eyesight. And everything looks so real. It's like real life.

  • Man, I remember when my dad bought me this game as a kid, and when I got a little into it, I loved it so much.

  • I loved this game! and i was a child when i played it.... so now... I NEED HELP.

does this run on windows7 if i download from steam?? or do anyone got any other game they can recomend?

  • Hurray for console ports of PC games we never wanted ported. Riven wasn't really a console game, and the fact that Acclaim (Which I hope stays DEAD, for all intensive purposes), wanted to make a bit of money and thought it'd be fun to take a game that sold rather well on the PC and apply it to the console market.

Riven is probably my favorite in the series. The story, the music, the visual splender, and the logical-yet-mystifying puzzles were excellent and well-deserved.

  • click game

  • Riven was impossible to control on the PlayStation.

  • @BankruptMonopoly you bought it?

  • My dad and I played this as a kid, he would sit there while I played the level, and occasionally he would say, slow down and look at the scenery. I never understood why...

Now I do, and it is amazing.

  • @milodaman2 Haha, exactly what he said to me

  • I LIKED the game's slowness--the backround wind, the aural theme for each section of the islands. It was like walking there, which doesn't happen instantly. I know, I know...the retro-ness of the game probably (in part) sank Cyan and the famous Miller duo (as well as their infighting). The Millar's obsession with detail and atmosphere (as well as Robyn's VERY talented backround music) enthralled me in the 90's, when I was a young mother desperate for an absorbing outlet. Pity it's over.

  • This game was HARD! I got stuck a lot ..but i loved it because it was beautiful

  • Nice shadowgate music on the intro

  • fuck moron your saying riven wrong, you say it like you would rivin not riven. Maybe this will help RAI VENN

  • one of the best games ive ever played, took me more than a year to complete no walkthrough whatsoever thats what made it so fun to play, i had no internet. I just had think my way through.

  • Boring gameplay? Man, it's a mystical adventure, not an ego-shooter. You don't know what you're talking about.

  • I really love the sea reptiles!

  • I'd love to compose for a game like Myst in the near future! I'm composing for a French RPG now! Not alot of female video game composers out there!

  • Myst = Glorified Slide show. Riven = Glorified Screen Saver.

  • Riven; The Best Game Ever...

  • memories memories! Best lasting memories of a video, ever. It was advances for its time - it still looks good.

  • I can understand why you don't like puzzle. They make you think and use your brain and that's not something most people like to do. Personally, I love these games, but to each his own. Also, I don't see why you're even watching this video if you don't like these kind of games. You must havea lot of free time. You better get back to shooting aliens and blowing shit up.

  • "You better get back to shooting aliens and blowing shit up" Haha xD

  • @3DChris82

Riven is one of my favorite games... but I still like shooting aliens and blowing stuff up. xD

  • @3DChris82 I couldn't agree more! Thank you for being intelligent :)

  • @3DChris82 There's really no need to be a pretentious douchebag. The puzzles in these old PC adventure games are often obtuse and illogical, arbitrarily assembled at the whim of the game designers. Clicking around on a screen until you put the right peg in the right hole doesn't make you intelligent.

  • Typical 13 year old know-nothing.

  • @SP420 Hey, dude. I grew up with Myst. I first got Myst when I was 4 years old. This game: 7. I am now 13 and I still love Myst.

  • stupid comments. its a point and click game. it should be slow. But how could you enjoy the graphicks without watching every aspect?riven graphics maybe the best of the mid 90's. whoever had the chance to play this game knows what i mean.

  • i used to watch my dad play it and i loved watching

  • @drewkos lol I used to watch my dad play it too.

  • @TheTheconn

I've never played this game before, but I really want to. I have one question before I start the game: are the point-and-click controls difficult? I don't often play games like this, so I'm curious if the controls are a turn-off.

  • @JackKlompus13 No, the controls are very simple (at least on PC it is). The mouse cursor is context-sensitive and will change depending on where it is. You can usually look around in most directions by clicking on the edges of the screen, and anything that stands out to you can probably be interacted with. Unless you're not a fan of click-fests, then this is surely not one to disappoint, even today.

  • @259

    Thanks.

  • @259 Did they remake it like they did realmyst. I like the freedom of that game better.

  • @soulhunter59 No, there is no 3D remake of this.

  • @259 Will there be. If not is it still worth the buy. I liked myst I just like the new one better.

  • @soulhunter59 No, there probably won't ever be. Riven by itself is quite a masterpiece and any derivative of it is pretty much inherently inferior. You just have to play Riven; the experience is worth it.

  • @259 Where can I buy and play the other myst games. I can't seem to find them anywhere.

  • @soulhunter59 Try Steam.

  • It's a puzzle game: what would be fun about a fast puzzle game? You need time to think about those puzzles; that's why the game is 'slow'.

For everything else: pretty accurate review. (Loading times are shorter on the PC version though. [Even on my old Win98 PC, on my WinXP PC the loading times are almost gone, as you might expect.])

  • is this game FPS or is it like a mousegame?

  • OMG I LOVED THIS GAME AND STILL DO!

  • i didnt like the other comment it hade 3 bads :..( i dont like bad comments

  • i dont remember saying that the game came out befor the intrnet but ik it didnt but ik this an awesome game its better than world of warcraft (if u like puzzle games more than explor games)ps i need to stop tayin siend in XD

  • I got this game the week it came out when I was in high school. I wasn't extremely sharp back then (I think I'd be better at solving the puzzles now as well as understanding what game developers expect out of me... I remember actually trying to crack the alphabet in the school room... sheesh...), but oh man... I was so absorbed in the game, I wanted to do nothing else for the next month.

  • I've played many a screen by screen pre-rendered game in my time, Maze and puzzle games in the 90s such as the one that came with digital encyclopedias via early failed MS games studios games, Dog Day, Myst and even Riven later on. On the PC they are seamless, if people have an issue with looking at mostly static screens with overlay animation, guess their the same people who don't read books either.

  • @CmdrFoxDavion 1+ For you! I think they did a study in America saying that's one of the biggest problems with the schooling there. They don't teach kids to read... O.o

I'm amazed how very few people I know read (or read quality books (twilight)) I've probably got more entertainment out of all the books I have read then all the TV I have watched or games played.

  • the game play looks like time lapse an old gte computer game

  • I got this game for the Playstation, it has like 5 CD's. It was awesome and really creepy at some parts. The sounds really fit up to the gameplay.

  • The Internet was invented in 1989. It was around in 1997, but it was nothing compared to today.

  • riven is increadibly fun to play , even if u do the entire thing with a wlkthrough, i didn't like myst at all really , only played it for the back story, riven is far better

  • #1 I disagree, find that the game was very entertaining if you know how to play it I can't really argue with your opinion there though.

#2 0:53 OH MY GOD you did not just say that! In Myst? No not the BS I mean PS version but the game Myst it self. STOP PLAYING THE MYST GAMES ON CONSOLES THEY ALWAYS F*** IT UP. If you had the computer version Myst you would be able to get you around in micro seconds.

#3 Pleas don't ruin the game's series just because you F#$% up and got if for the PS.

  • what? no 3d?

  • Miss this game

  • Pissing off the Wahrk was undeniably my favorite part of the game... hehehe... ^_^

  • If you don't like the controls, get it for the computer :P

  • wow how impressive

    ¬¬

    get a life child

  • im good, thanks.

    already have one

  • good for you kid, and you probably didn't give two shits about the game play

    (Comment for noise789)

  • lol. yup :p

  • I like chess, Scrabble, games that make you stop and think. Riven has always been my kind of thing. Not a game, but an environment. An adevnture. I would not want that to go as fast as RaceCarDriver on my whatever-game-station. Taking your time is part of the process.

  • Comment removed

  • The idea of real adventure is that it takes real time. You are meant to progress a little more each day you return to Riven, and it rewards that. Riven simply CANNOT be properly judged by the typical gamer b/c it is not made for the typcial gamer, who is sometimes stuck in today's unfortunate philosophy of instant gratification. Riven was made for someone else entirely.

  • Today's modern gaming philosophy reflects that of our own Western culture: Seek only the quickest and most invigorating route to gratification---and never think! Riven says NO to that idea. It says "Stop a moment. Explore. Dream. Enjoy the process."

  • "The fault of the series is the slow, sedate, and even boring gamelay!"

This guy is annoying. He doesn't get it at all.

  • Comment removed

  • yeah. I don't think he quite gets what puzzle adventure is about

  • I hope they remake the game in realtime

    3D some day

  • I hope not. Do you remember how bad realMyst looked? I wouldn't want them to ruin Riven like that.

  • Real Myst was more graphically detailed than the original game, and more fun too, not to mention that was ages ago, graphics are just about at the point now where realtime 3D graphics actually look like riven stills.

  • hopefully

  • actually what was the story of this game?

    never understood it.. -.-

  • This game is the second in a very large series, you won't completely understand the story without the other games and novels. I do recommend the novels though, particularly the book of atrus, it gives a good background and understanding of riven and its characters, even a brief explanation of the science involved.

  • If this game was 3d that wouuld be INSANELY AWESOME!! I would be like "OHHH YEAHHH" even though that wasn't necessary! lol

It's still INSANELY AWESOME though even in 2d, it does engage you a ton.

  • is there any scary parts in this game?

  • well you can get killed

  • what in riven? how do you get killed?

  • ghen can soot you you can get trapped in the book or fall in the fissure whithout finishing the job

  • how can you get him to shoot you?

  • once you have the trap book go in it on riven, refuse to take the trap book 3 times or go to his house without the trap book 4 times

  • Wawaweewah...this game was awesome I rented it like 4 times in a row lol when i was a child and FINALLY beat it...i never ended up buying it but the amount of times renting it was probably the same price as buying it lol

  • I don't think they mentioned how brain-bashingly hard this game is, which is also probably what turned many people away from it once they realized it. I used to go around for hours without actually having learned or advanced anything.

  • Yeah, my friend and I worked together on it, and we got a lot of help, and we still took about a month to figure it out.

  • y r they saying so many bad stuff about this awsome game....

i had it so you walk around instead of clicking to different places.

enyone's gotta love this boring but addictive game.... :D

  • y got that game but my disc she damage

  • Wow, they're using the KFSS studios version of Within the Giant, from Final Fantasy 4. Good song :D, and I can't wait for this game to come in the mail.

  • i love love love love love love this game

had the myst game since i was in elementary school and i loved when i finally got riven but its still confusing at times

  • see, there r so many ppl that dont kno what riven rly is...so they play it not knowing that Riven Is a Very important age to the myst series (otherly known as Gehn's 5th age

  • I have wanted this game for years.... if i dont get it soon im going to explode. That happens to me sometimes

  • Excellent game.

    Brings back good memories :)
