I've been a Mavs fan my whole life...And I'm not happy with the way the team is heading, but I'm going to stay optimistic...Look how the Celtics jumped from a door mat to NBA champions...Dallas is known for making good trades...Maybe the Kidd trade isn't exactly what we needed, but we had to do something to get this team back where it needed to be...But I still believe the Mavericks will make it through this rough patch and be back to contending status soon...GO MAVS!!!

rockets fan here. the mavs were a pretty solid team last year but i think that first of all they have to improve the defense and they have to get one more guy that can really spread the floor and can make plays on offense. I think most mavs fans will agree with me when i say you cant have dirk carry the load every single season. I actually think they are mayb 1 or 2 players away from getting back to being a elite team in the nba like they used to be.

Great points by CowboyTD, Avery did enter the job prematurely and took over rather quickly. Did he do a great job in his tenure as a coach? Absolutely. But he didn't pick up the Essential things that a great coach is supposed to have. Hopefully my fellow maverick fans and I can look forward to the next year(s) for that elusive championship.

I kinda agree with CowboyTd. I just dont think that we replaced him with anybody that made it worth firing AJ. Nobody is really excited that Rick Carlisle is the Mavericks Coach now. They fired Avery Johnson 2 years after being the coach of the year, and 1 year after Dirk winning the MVP award. Maybe Avery Johnson is not the right coach for Dallas, But I seriously doubt that Rick Carlisle is.

1) Avery has a HUGE ego. Nobody noticed because Cuban got that label.

2) Avery is a control freak. Nobody noticed because Devin was young, but the truth came out when Kidd was also put on a tight leash.

3) Avery also tried to control Dirk by making him Tim Duncan. Nobody noticed because Dirk is so good at expanding his game.

4) Avery can't manage rotations. Nobody noticed because he had decent assistant coaches, but things fell apart when he banned Del Harris and told Joe Prunty to shut up.

Avery's X's and O's are downright deplorable. I used to support him, but three mistakes in particular changed my mind.

1) He went small in Game 1 of the '07 playoffs instead of going with the lineup that won 67 games, essentially making himself Don Nelson's bitch. This was the only home game they lost, and before that they could ahve won the series without ever needing to win in Oakland.

2) When Dallas got Kidd, Avery said in the press conference that he would be helpful in crunch time. Then, down by two against the Spurs, Avery benched Kidd "because he wanted to try something", which failed miserably.

3) In Game 4 in the '08 playoffs, down 2-1, the Mavs desperately needed a win at home. Dallas built a 7 point lead in the 1st quarter. To keep the momentum, Avery puts BAREA in to start the 2nd, killing the energy in the arena. They never got it back for the rest of the series.

Combine these with the general trends like slowing Kidd down and making him a weak side shooter, not holding Howard accountable for 2nd half disappearances, and giving Stackhouse 30 mpg no matter how terrible he was, and clearly we have a coach who doesn't have a clue what he's doing.

I'm sorry, but Avery couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. He is a glorified cheerleader at best. His schemes are all paint-by-the-numbers instead of playing to the strengths of his personnel. He is awful at managing rotations and has no capacity to make in-game adjustments. Rick Carlisle is a huge upgrade and much needed fresh face.

If Avery is so fantastic, why do Steve Kerr and John Paxson have no interest in hiring him? They are smart guys who know a thing or two about hoops.

I disagree. The problem is Avery Johnson.

Remember when Kidd first became a Maverick (this year)? He fit in naturally, got a ton of assists, and the team got a lot of fast break points.

Then Avery decided to step in and tell Kidd to be a shooter. THAT'S when the team slowed down and couldn't score. I never thought I'd see Kidd plod up the floor and timidly look to the bench for Avery to scream out an iso play, but it happened every damn possession.

Since then, they've been systematically trading away their youth for old "veterans" who bring nothing to the table except "experience" (Jason Kidd excluded). The five guys left are of course now two years older (will be three by next playoffs).

First of all to those who thinks Cuban screwed up, I would suggest you listen to what Avery said on ESPN radio. He wanted to go and it was a mutual agreement. Second, I like Avery, but he was constantly making really terrible coaching decisions from trying to trap a point guard on top of a key, keeping players in when they have bad performances, and not using the depth that we had. This team is getting old. We need to make some changes, and that means having a new voice. It was a good move.
