amazing as usual!! Now I can train azkaban to be calm around things like that:) by the way, its the cutest thing ever when mabel sticks out her tounge:)
Excellent tutorial, very detailed and descriptive. Your videos do a great job at showing how well positive reinforcement works and the strong bond between dog and owner it creates. Keep the videos coming!
I absolutely love all your videos; they've really helped me with ideas for teaching my own border collie calm behavior and fun tricks to keep his mind busy. Thank you for sharing!
@alexlouder this isn't overfeeding!!! you HAVE to feed rapidly at the start or your dog will just revert to the behaviour and you then decrease the amount of treats over time as I demonstrate if you care to watch the whole video, after not too many sessions you won't need ANY treats if you are training this correctly. healthy treats such as fresh chicken are all I use and take that amount out of one of your dogs meals. also the treats I use are the size of a pea, really small.
I've heard this again and again- but ... after that 'overfeeding' the dog is more compatible to the world around and this makes him a happier dog. No more complaining about unwanted behaviour.
And all good trainer tells you how to fade the treats! I think it's really weird that people seems to have less probs with p u n i s h i n g than giving treats...
I've heard this again and again- but ... after that 'overfeeding' the dog is more compatible to the world around and this makes him a happier dog, because less complaining about unwanted behaviour.
And all good trainers tells you how to fade the treats! I think it's really weird that people seems to have less probs with p u n i s h i n g than with giving treats...
omg that is alot of treats..dont u think he would get addictd and expect a treat EACH TIME? or get over the treats and not want them anymore...like mine -_-
@whispanic123 you have to decrease the amount of treats you feed for this as I demonstrate in the video, in clicker training a change in an undesired behaviour you always feed rapidly in the beginning and then decrease the amount of treats, the goal is to use no treats at all which shouldn't take too long if you work on this regularly with short 10 minute sessions.
@SVKmellow you won't get it perfect in one training session, you will need to work on it over a good few sessions making the gaps in between treats further and further apart and always giving verbal praise. the end result should be to have your dog calm without treats though I would recommend that you do reinforce the behaviour every now and then to keep it strong :)
Ok im trying to teach my dog to shake and she get really excited when she sees the treat and will do it over again. What can i do to get her to stop? Thanks
i have a border collie, and as soon as i brin out my vaccum cleaner, he runs away into my bedroom and cowers on my bed or next to my dad. How do i get him to know that its not going to hurt him, and that he doesnt have to be afraid?
@Girlyy4 you can follow the steps in this video for fear of the noise also, do it in the same way starting with the noise on the computer and building up :)
Could you essentially do the same thing to keep your dog from chasing cars? introduce new cars ( not running or moving), also getting a friend to drive by really slow - and slowly increase speed while rewarding your dog for calmness?
I also have a freeway nearby, I was thinking I could walk my pup to about where i see some tension, then back off, reward her for calmness. then slowly get closer & closer(while rewarding for calm) until we can stand next to the freeway?
I've noticed with my pup the faster the car is moving, the more reactive she is, so if I start with distance & slow moving cars I should be able to get her to understand that calm is good, freaking out/barking/chasing is not.
Excellent video! Sirius has never had this problem, but Tonks the BC goes crazy running around the house when I vacuum and she's at my house. This is a step up from her attacking it, but I'm definitely going to use this tutorial to get her more comfortable!
Aww Sian you explain things so well, this will help so many people! ha ha Samson ran up to the laptop when he heard Mabel bark :) Ooh I dont know whether I've told you this before but your very pretty ^^ Fantastic video!
Super super dog you have there Sian, and a very usefull vid,i was going to get a blue merle when i went to get quinn but he looked so cute i went for the red merle,
hehe, it's funny you should say that because Mabel was advertised as a red merle but when I went to see her (around a 4 hour drive) she was blue, I fell in love though! your quinn is so lovely I just think he is such a beauty! Thank you for your nice comments :-)
Wonderful!! What a well explanation on how to each calmness around a sweeper! That vacuum was very high pitched, even through the computer. 5* ~Heather and Jesse~
Thank you sooooo much Lizzy, you rock! oooh that was Jamie (KeenCan) that painted that picture!! she is a really wonderful artist and a great friend too :-) and yes, Mabel is nearly a year old now! I can hardly believe it, she is still my baby though! haha!
Just great Sian - that's going to be a help to a whole lot of people including me when I get the garden broom out - it turns into a game of tug! Hoover - no problem - until its switched off and just sitting there - then it becomes a demon to barked at until I put it away - same with the dustpan and brush when its sitting in a corner! Strange dog!
Great tutorial Sian! I really have to use this with Keen and the broom! (then move on to the new kittens, as she spazzes out completely over them!) I need your patience or you need my dog! LOL
Great job. Very informative. With that much treating in response to clicking, do you find it necessary to reduce the amount of food given for regular meals?
Hey, thank you for the nice comment :-) yes, I do reduce food if I'm heavily treating, I also make sure that I use healthy treats. I still keep training sessions short but have more of them and as you can see there are times when I'm pretty much feeding all the time.
I LOVE how you added the sound!! How smart are you??:)) This is an EXCELLENT video. Very impressive. You are calm, informative and successful! I love Mabel so relaxed and cool on the couch at the end:)) Thank You!
5*s from us! Well done! I love how Mabel's tongue is sticking out as she is waiting for her reward. She is such a beautiful dog and you are doing wonderful things with her. Now if I could figure out how to get Bandit to be calm around others playing frisbee, dogs chasing balls, or dogs just running. Same concept, I just need to hire some kids to help me with this. :) Awesome Video!
thank you so much Pam, You are an awesome friend! Oh yes, Mabel ALWAYS has her tongue poking out, it's really cute, she looks at you and tilts her head from side to side with her tongue poked out! she is a really funny dog!
Great video Sian you really explain things well! I used this with my border collie a few months ago as she was scared of the hoover and now she just sits on her bed and watches!
Another great video, Sian! It was quite a challenge to get Ricky to leave the vacuum cleaner alone a year ago - too bad I didn't have your video tutorial then! You do awesome things with your dogs and the clicker!
PS. Mabel is so grown up now! How can it be that time has gone by that fast?
thank you SO MUCH! you are always so totally lovely about my videos :-) Oh yes, Mabel is coming up to a year in a little over a months time! she is still my baby though, I'm not acknowledging that she is grown up now! haha!
Excellent tutorial. It is important to be calm to communicate calm too and you...you know how to mark the ideal rhythm of serenity. Congratulations and thank you to share.
where were u five years ago, wen my dog was a puppy, and did this all the time. but we didnt solve the problem this way. what we did was wen we used the broom, we pushed my dog out of the room, and wenever he set a paw in the room, we pushed him out again. then he would just lie down and stay there. then wen we were done we said, good boy, and gave him a treat. and that worked.
my Mi is also afraid of these things. . . sorry, WAS afraid, now she just looks annoyed by them. Great video, and wonderful tutorial Sian!!! Love Mabel's tongue sticking out while she's concentrating! So cute. . . T
As always your kindness and calmness sian, to your girls re-there training, always pays dividends-great-well done... then everyone's a "winner" :-))) truly marvellous as always. Love R/M/Meesha xxX
Oh you always do such an amazing job!! I always love watching your vids!! Banjo can get VERY like that with just about anything on wheels, and noisy things. The lawnmower and whipper snipper are faves, along with scateboards and motorbikes, which can sometimes be very dangerous. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us!! Love Shelley xxx
