I completely disagree with Matthew on the 2001 Review, but I admit, Minority Report sucked. It's as if it tried to make sense and failed miserably.... 2001 intentionally left it open to the viewer. Add in all the stupid action scenes and you've got a real bag of shit. Didn't get the whole Hitler thing though.
@ie727 No one ever talks about the movie; they just talk about it's accolades. yes, it is a visual masterpiece, but anyone with money can put amazing special effects on camera.
If you ever have a bit of free time, have a quick browse of the CM forum. It's pretty funny how deeply people debate minor flaws in the filmshe reviews which really are not that important.
There seem to be two type of people on there, people who are way too offended by the fact one person does not like a film they like, and people who seem to orgasm off the fact CM agree with them about a film, and now believe him to be some sort of film critic god who only an idiot would dare disagree with.
Tbh I'm somewhat of a CM fan, but I'm still happy for you that you've got more exposure for your 2001 response. I don't even like 2001 and felt you did it a lot of justice. Also regarding Minority Report, yeah, that Hitler card pull was pretty bad. Then again, the Minority Report review is perhaps THE worst CM series I've ever seen.
But, if not for it, I wouldn't have gotten to see you're subbing of that old scene. I might actually subscribe if you keep up the comedic gold like the end. <.<
I enjoy watching these reviews...However, 2001 is a piece of visual art and the space lets us color it with our own imaginations. I wish Hollywood would use more space and scope think Lynch, Hitchcock and of course Kruebeck...
I concur. Have you seen the remake of Solaris by Soderbergh? I feel it is at that level even more so than the original Tarkovsky version.. Plus i must admit i'm a big fan of Clooney & he really is amazing (and underrated) in that film.
I don't understand neither how someone could hate 2001 and call Minority Report the worst ever out of all possible candidates (among which I wouldn't find MR). But I still like Matthew for his reviews on the Matrix sequels and the Star Wars prequels and I have no problems with ridiculous Hitler comparisons unless in political discussions! ^^
CM's 2001 review was pretty damned stupid. But when I watched the Minority Report review it just left me in a WTF state. I didnt even watch the last part of the 4 parts. Apparently there is a disclaimer in there. Dont know what it is though as I cant bring myself to watch it or anything else he puts out there anymore. Im finished with CM. He is just a try-hard reviewer with no skill, blind to the obvious.
@RiffRaff3169 Yeah i agree. I just felt so compelled to say something about 2001 to try and undo some of the damage that i really do feel he caused but my intent is not to be the "Anti-CM guy" as he really is his own worst enemy at this point; Still when i heard about the Hitler thing i HAD to say something & then the Downfall scene occurred to me. Thanks for watching!
Glad you got so many new subscribers thanks to ConfusedMatthews stupid video, lol. Not that yours is more objective or more friendly, but hey.
Mocking people is just childish, even if you don't agree with them. But anyway, go ahead and start a Renaissance on youtube. The both of you are pretty much on a same level regarding objectivity and fairness.
@damanhl I have no idea if u r being serious or sarcastic as it's difficult 2 tell sometimes w/ comments. CM claimed that he was going 2 b "objective" & then demonstrably wasn't which i explain in detail. I also explained upfront that i was going 2 b sarcastic, not "friendly". My level of "fairness" being on par with his IYO is not a refutation of any of my points; further more what u r doing is known as the "2 wrongs make a right" logical fallacy. Ur agreeing w/ me in order 2 say i'm wrong.
Not really. I thought CMs review was pointless. And unmotivated. Your videos were partly interesting but unnecessary both in their length and in the attack towards CM. His videos speak for themselves by now. I just meant that if I were you I wouldn't bother with small fishes. Someone making a stupid video happens all the time. The part where you imitated his "whining voice" here really killed some of your credibility. Apart from that I can't say much against you, I am not on any side here.
@damanhl I know & i've heard that b4. The truth is his review gave me an excuse (a really good one IMO) to analyze 2001 by showing how he didn't & as i say at the end it was also to undo some of the damage i really do feel he did. He may b a "small fish" but he has a lot of followers & i felt that w/ 2001 he crossed the line & his "Hitler" analogy crossed even further.. but you make a fair point (there is a thin line btween parody & mockery) & i will do my best to b more adult. thx 4 watching.
I don't like the term "followers", it implies some unreasonable worshiping. I happen to be a mod on his forums because he was interesting and funny in the beginning. But it did bring a lot of interesting people together, and believe me, few of them agree with each other, especially when it comes to CM.
I hope you've seen the rest of Downfall Chase; in my mind it's one of only about half dozen movies that I have seen that are utterly flawless and also profoundly moving. By the way I checked out 2001 again after your review, as you said you can instantly appreciate its influence on contemporary sci-fi. I also saw full metal jacket for the first time, that I truly loved, just for how well the dialogue was written if nothing else; I strongly recommend it to you if you haven't seen it.
@APOCALPICS 'Downfall' is a perfect film (IMO).. & glad to see yet another person check out 2001 after watching my 9 part soapbox rant. Full Metal was great & brutal.
ok not wishing to sound like a dick, or a CM fanboy (for the record I think the guy is a douch) but I think you should stop it with the CM bashing and move on to something eles.
Your 2001 videos were great but I think attacking him about another review would be beating a dead horse.
BTW I'd love to see a review of that overrated piece of crap Avatar.
@snoopyisback I know what u mean. It's just that I earned a bunch of new subscribers specifically becuz of my pointed response 2 CM's 2001 review & the result of that is requests keep coming in 4 me to respond 2 him again (& that is not my plan) but if i feel the need 2 correct / respond 2 anything he does in the future i of course will. The "Minority Report= Hitler" thing he did was just SO outrageous that i had 2 say something & it gav me a chance 2 give a gift 2 all those requesters.
hey snoopyisback...if you saw the RedLetterMedia avatar review chase referred to (and got chase's hint) you would know that chase is going to defend "that overrated piece of crap Avatar" not bash it. And rightly so. The film had several merits that to many people ignore.
I'm not bashing you for disliking it, just don't expect that your gonna hear chase talk about it the way you're anticipating.
@o2theh I've considered that.. Something covering his style & movie watching deficits in general but i have so much else i want to do video wise that it's doubtful i will ever get to it (but u never know).
I must say I really like the concept you're going for... Youtube certainly could use a "Renaissance Man".
I'm actually really looking forward to your discussion about Mulhollen Drive. Even though I really like David Lynch's work, particularly Blue Velvet (well, and Dune because I'm such a geek), both Eraserhead and Mulhollen Drive seemed a little impenetrable for me. Not that I thought they were bad at all, just had trouble deciphering what Lynch was trying to say.
@reeve1991 Ah yes, i am a BIG David Lynch fan; he is my favorite director of all time & as for Mulholland Drive.. i can't wait to convince you of it's genius - IMO it's his crowning achievement.
What's up chase, glad you're back making vids. This is actually your funniest in my opinion. I loved your rebuttle of the 2001 CM mess, but this one's hilarious. I'll have to actually watch is minority report stuff for a good laugh. I can't believed he compared a movie *period* let alone THAT movie to hitler. What a douche.
@yarealpoof Hey man, thanks for saying that. Once i heard CM mention Hitler i instantly thought of the Downfall scene and it basically wrote itself from there. It also gave me a chance to do a mini-rant about Transformers 2 which IMO is the worst movie i have ever seen (and i've seen a lot of movies).
yeah, I actually think of Tranformers 2 as not even being worthy of a review. It's more like a really really really really really really loooooooooooooong toy commercial for the 6-11 yearold target audience of views. I shutter to even call it a "movie." glad you got to rant about it without it even taking up too much of your time.
oh, and one more thing...As far as the WORST movie I've ever seen goes, I would actually call Batman and Robin the worst movie I have ever seen. it's so bad that it is now one of my favorite movies to watch with my friends and family because we can literally make fun of every single minute detail in that film IT is spectacularly horrible...but Tranformers 2 is pretty terrible.
I didn't realize he had a list of movies he wants to do. Went back on his web page to check it
Basically he thinks Spirited away, Departed, Wrestler, 2001, No Country for old men, Incredibles, Kill Bill, Fight Club, Back to the future 2, and lion King all sucked
Yet he liked Moulin Rouge?? unless he's means the 1951 Toulouse-Lautrec biopic he really does have the WORST taste in movies EVER.
Seriously Moulin Rougue? With John Leguizamo as Lautrec? WTF that movie was a rape of my eyes and ears
The Redlettermedia take on Avatar wasn't as such a reveview, but rather a look at the strings Cameron pulled at to make this a success despite what it appears to have done to mainstream films.
Loved the 2001 thing, but it got very long and when you state in the beginning that you are directing this at Matthew, there is no need to say his name in every other sentence. It makes you sound needlessly condescending and detracts from your otherwise well-formulated argument
@tonkemaskin I understand where ur coming from but the repetition of CM's name was intentional.. While any debater is automatically subject to the "condescension" accusation i personally felt it was worth the risk as it was important to remind the audience as well as CM himself (if he watched) that these were indeed HIS arguments and this IS how weak they are. I wrote 30 pages of notes on his review.. he maybe wrote 2 pages on 2001 for his. I know it was long but he gives so much 2 work with.
CM was asking for it though, his review was very condescending of people who enjoyed the film so I can see exactly where chase was coming from. I watched CM's full 2001 review and I got offended because of the way he spoke to those of us who understood it. He also made several snide and sloppy arguments in an attempt to ignore anything someone with an opposing opinion might bring to the table. He pissed me off, so I'm glad Chase ripped him a new one.
ha your reaction to his review was priceless. I couldn't get half-way through his review of Minority Report myself. It was the most inane irritating review I've ever attempted to watch. Never thought I'd agree with everything Hitler had to say. I think the main problem with RedLetter's review is that fact it was so short, He usually spends a lot more time going through the whole film. Through since Avatar is still in theaters that might have been for the best. Keep the videos coming
@jamesedwardclard "Never thought I'd agree with everything Hitler had to say." Ha ha! That was what i was going for - thx 4 noticing & thx 4 watching. My thing with Avatar is that i find myself having to defend it to fellow nerds & while i did indeed agree with a lot of what RedLetterMedia & others have taken issue with in the film i really don't feel that this backlash going on against it is deserved & my video will explain my reasons 4 this. It's become hip 2 not like it 4 sum reason.
You are a very engaging and methodical debater, Chase, and I look forward to your future projects!
I also found Matthew's Minority Report review unsettling. It sounds as if CM thinks that Roger Ebert cannot endorse a film that he enjoyed. We are all entitled to like and promote the media we enjoy; you can question Ebert's liking for MR, but no-one has the right to tell you that you are not allowed to like something.
In that respect, CM contradicted a remark he made in his Transformers review.
@QUANTUMJOKER Thank you 4 that. I am humbled. As 4 CM he really is getting noticeably worse and worse. The "Hitler" thing is beyond ridiculous 4 so many reasons it's almost pointless 2 list them all but the attack on Ebert is almost equally strange. Ebert doesn't hide behind fallacies and while i don't agree with him a lot of the time he at least really knows what he is talking about and is also willing 2 change his mind. Also i flat out don't believe CM wen he says MR is "worst ever" -WTF?
If you watched Confused Matthew's recent video game discussions, the guy plays pretty much just Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. Probably says more about him then anything else. :P
Anyway, looking forward to future videos!
P.S. If you have dibs on Fight Club and No Country for Old Men rebuttles, then I call dibs on The Departed.
@poparena To be honest it really is getting very hard to listen to anything he puts out anymore. I really had to force myself to listen to the Minority Report review so i can't say when or if i'll be checking out his non-movie stuff.
As for 'dibs'.. it's a deal; The Departed is yours. Sorry to call 2 movies at once but i feel so strongly about both that i will have no choice but to respond.. but there is nothing wrong with multiple rebuttals as we have proved with 2001.
As for "the fallacy that atheism is a belief system", a fallacy is a false rule for deductive inference, but well ...
There actually was a rather long discussion of positive/negative atheism here on YouTube which was rather predictable and unless you are the next Gettier or Plantinga, I prepare to be underwhelmed.
@Deliratio I know what fallacy means; i'm sort of obsessed with logical fallacies in general. What i am referring 2 (& perhaps it's my fault 4 lack of clarity) is that the re-branding of atheism as a dogma is the 3rd of the 3 primary tactics for defending religion in general. If one falsely labels atheism as a belief system (& it's not) than any deductive inference they make from it will be fallacious.
Also I am aware of the discussion u r referring 2. At least give me a chance b4 judging.
"I know what fallacy means; i'm sort of obsessed with logical fallacies in general."
Didn't doubt that, I wanted to express I didn't know what exactly you were aiming at.
As for giving you a chance, it's not that I expect a lack of quality, but I've read so much about this that basically everything you _could_ do has a high probability of being something I've already heard (I should never make a drinking game out of "Will this be what I think it is?" when it comes to philosophy).
I guess many people simply watched Matthew, then went "Ok, there HAS to be a rebuttal to this on the web" and then found one (that's the way I found this and then I showed it to other people because I was initially so pissed ;-).
I actually quite agreed on the redletter-analysis of Avatar, I didn't think I would ever see a James Cameron (in the sci-fi genre) that was a bigger failure than Titanic.
@Deliratio I too agreed with most of what RedLetter said about Avatar.. i just thought compared to all his other reviews it was the weakest so far & he addresses some "problems" that didn't think really were problems. I'm not looking for agreement across the board, i just disagree with some of what he said & i want to say my peace.. that's all.
& hey, thanks for favoriting my video - very cool of you.
@archedgar
Fuck you, your just jealous.

So, Chase, here's the deal. I found your response to CM interesting, but you really did a terrible job of supporting anything you said.
You brought up other people's opinion's and used your interpretation in order to justify everything in the film.
While you are allowed to like anything you like, but you have to realize, if it's interpretation, than my interpretation is it's meaningless.

@QUANTUMJOKER
(This complaint is directed at CM, not you.)
Moreover, is it wise to compare Minority Report to Hitler when Spielberg is of Jewish descent?
QUANTUMJOKER 2 years ago
@QUANTUMJOKER Yeah, That's exactly why i made 'Schindler's List' Hitler's favorite movie in the clip (plus i just thought it was real funny).
chasemelendez 2 years ago

P.S. If you have dibs on Fight Club and No Country for Old Men rebuttles, then I call dibs on The Departed.
poparena 2 years ago

Deliratio 2 years ago

And wow, I didn't know about that to-do list ...
Deliratio 2 years ago
@Deliratio I too agreed with most of what RedLetter said about Avatar.. i just thought compared to all his other reviews it was the weakest so far & he addresses some "problems" that didn't think really were problems. I'm not looking for agreement across the board, i just disagree with some of what he said & i want to say my peace.. that's all.
& hey, thanks for favoriting my video - very cool of you.
