Keeping track of the business side is vital for a freelancer.
However, treat contracts sparingly. Many of them will want you to give up ALL RIGHTS to your articles and I mean ALL RIGHTS-digital, hard copy, aquatic-you name it.
My advice: Keep track of all checks you recieve and make copies for personal and tax reasons. Sign contracts only if you need to and can't renegotiate terms. Create a good budget and spend judiciously.
