against someone who's trying to rip your head off...this is how deluded some shotokan people are. Karate is extremely effective as a martial art, but it's the simple techniques that are going to work, not this. Is Kanazawa an effective fighter? Yes. Is this bunkai rubbish? Yes. Don't try and defend the indefensible.
This is one of the reasons people leave Shotokan. This is terrible bunkai. If there are practical applications of these moves then show us them. No one is ever going to attack you like this, so you're never going to be able to defend like this. If you're ever in a real life situation where you're under threat you need techniques that work well under severe stress. Why would anyone practice like this? I remember one of my ex-instructors showing me some bunkai where he 'caught' a punch..try that
Well I've studied Shotokan for more than 40 years (including in Japan with Kanazawa Kancho and trained with Murakami) and to be honest these Bunkai are the lamest efforts that I've ever seen. If this is the best he can come up with then his minder needs to have a word in his ear and make him a nice hot Milo.
Funakoshi studied this kata for 9 years, does anyone think that is all he came up with in that time. I think all early jananese dojo were McDojo. Get these guys black belts and get the system out there. Oh and if anyone asks what Kata means, this is what you show them. They wont question you as YOU ARE SENSEI and no one questions sensei. And so it goes on. Only thing is some of us do not accept your rubbish any longer. The old masters would be spinning in their graves.
Follw up to below. Hence when I was shown the Wado bunkai to some of the Pinan katas it was quite mind blowing and open up my Shotokan Katas to further interpretation. Also do a search on Sensei Iain Abernethy, who ahows what can be gained through the practical application of kata. Excellent stuff. I have been to a few of his 5 hr training sessions and well worth £20. (Not an advert, its just good stuff).
I am a praticing Shotokan Karate with over 25 years years of experience. I have been training at a Wado Based club for about 8 years now, and have seen a different level of understanding with bunkai. Shotokan is a very direct and aggressive form of karate, which uses alot of punching and blocking, where as wado-ryu, is more of an evasive form of karate and uses alot of throws, locks etc due to its Ju-Jitsu influences. I was always shown bunkai within my shotokan background as blocks and counters
Osu,Listen all you Dumb Ass critizing Kancho Kanazawa. I am a student of a 7thDAn SkIF instructor.25 years ago 7 big mongrol Mobs attacked my Shihan. He took them a part and smashed each one of them with ease. Many of you who are critizing Kancho Kanazawa would not even stand a chance in the street with him in his young days.He is a legend which has now aged in this video.Maybe he was 76 years old here.
IMO this bunkai was clearly *not* aimed at more advanced (i.e. dan level) karateka. I find this to be basic instruction for inexperienced students in order to give kata a more concrete basis as they practice. No, the sky is not falling.
@MeanEyedCats Its not aimed at advanced students because he doesn't know anything I've never seen nor heard (from his direct students) that they knew bunkai Once again ....there is no evidence of Kanazawa ever teaching any bunkai above the basic level. There is no photos, no film NOTHING! What you see is what you got...i.e. KIHON WAZA!
@jadewillow There is a notorious lack of records for all karate, up to about fifty years ago. Many (or even most) of the old-school instructors shunned record-keeping of all sorts. It doesn't surprise me that Kanazawa sensei was the same way.
Besides that, isn't a guy allowed to teach the basics?
@MeanEyedCats Allowed to teach the basics??? WTF? He claims total mastery with assuming a 10th Dan title and this is his Bunkai? .Our we to believe that this guy after all the years teaching Karate really believes that this is the correct bunkai.
What's wrong with that? Doesn't this say a lot about his Karate and other who follow his way....?
@MeanEyedCats lets get this correct. " Your trying to defend this guys lack of basic understanding of bunkai?" Your nuts! This video isn't the basics its trash pawned off as the correct bunkai! A) its not even close. B) it would get your ass kicked in a real fight! Lastly, is why shotokan doesn't work for a damn. Now if that doesn't bother you or you cant see why people have an issue with this black belt bull shit then the problem lies with you. Keep your head in the clouds .
@MeanEyedCats Nice... Which IMO translates into "I haven't got shit!" U fail to understand that outside your Shotokan Dojo your going to have a hard time defending this stuff. Why not look into why SO many people call this bunk...then correct it. Shotokan at its heart is good stuff... But when applied outside it normal kumite boundaries it falls short...Most experts are pointing to practical bunkai training as the problem. Get involved don't stick your head in the sand!
This is the reason so many have left JKA, Shotokan etc...(He's clueless on the applications of Tekki's and so high up no one is willing to show him or his cronies...more probably he's un willings to admit that what's he has been teaching is bunk) Sad... The Tekki's consist mainly of joint locks, throws, sweeps. There are some strikes and kicks, but few. None of the actual applications are what he's teaching.... Continued
@jadewillow This is what happens when you teach kihon waza and never rise above it. This is what happens when an old man "Funikoshi" teaches a bunch of collage kids todejutsu. Kihon waza done perfectly is still KIHON WAZA! His and other JKA prominent instructors interpretations on other Kata are justt as ridiculous. I wouldn't pay a dollar for this guy to teach me anything other than to punch and kick.
Indeed, Kanazawa is not a god and there are things you can criticize.BUT, when it's about explaining techniques in a kata, he show it in the right way!Even in that video. He shows the meaning of every technique, with one opponent. For me,it's just a demonstration of the meaning of some techniques, explained step by step for a better understanding.I think that this is the right way to start thinking about bunkai when you learn a new kata. Why should he show inexplicable and complicated experiments?
I'm sorry i like shotokan and i'm a Brown belt but this bunkai is not good... i like the kankudai bunkai by kanazawa but this one....How to say....what the fuck?
I have an awful lot of respect for Kanazawa sensei. His two SKI Kata books are my reference works for kata movement but....
why this bunkai? It's awful. Even if you consider it omote bunkai, why show it? I'd prefer the great masters either showed real ura bunkai or none at all rather than this over simplistic omote rubbish. It demeans the art sadly.
a bunkai is a bunkai is a bunkai. each can have his own interpretation - that's the essense of karate. define 'great masters' or 'real bunkai'. rubbish? show some respect to one of the great existing shotokan masters of all time. .
well, as I said, he is a fantastic kata technician. His speed, timing, etc are wonderful. This bunkai however is not. I'm not sure what you meant in your first sentence. There's omote bunkai and there's ura bunkai. Sadly, most videos posted by Japanese masters display omote bunkai as shown here. There are perhaps many cultural and historical reasons for this. Not displaying effective responses to realistic types of attack does however disregard the fine work that the creators of these katas did.
As inspirational and fantastic as these older karateka are we must question why they show us ineffective responses to unrealistic attacks.
They are doing so either (a) because they themselves do no know what the original intentions of the kata's creators were or (b) do not trust us with the knowledge they have.
(a) means that we should listen to them in the areas in which they are truly expert but ignore the other parts
(b) means that they have no respect for us. Respect is a two way street
Dunno why everyone says this is bad application... The armlock opened my eyes, and as for not being able to catch a punch in real life, maybe not against a boxer, but a common brawler or against a linear striker it is highly possible.
@karate1990 Read what i said idiot. I'll repeat, against and idiot brawler, its a possibility, but not just that the punch used in karate bunkai doesnt always have to be a punch, and bunkai isnt applied exactly the same as in the kata. Fighting with no rules doesnt make you a better fighter, it just opens up your chances of injury and stops the constant developement of skills needed such as timing, due to injuries and fear.
No against an idiot brawler its NOT a possibility, just because they aren't trained doesn't mean they can't punch fast, in fact they are more likely to punch, punch and keep punching, you will have no chance of blocking let alone catching.
And no rules sparring doesn't stop skills developing in fact it enhances the skills you NEED in a real situation and will reduce the fear you may feel in a real situation.
Look at the work of Iain Abernethy and Geoff Thompson and you will see what I mean.
I have seen many an idiot brawl, and I know they punch like made and do stupid things, most OTHER idiots, get taken aback by the sheer aggressiveness, but you can either fight fire with fire and use your own aggressiveness, or you can keep a calm and take advantage of openings, also I have two books by iain abernethy and also by geoff thompson. I'm not saying no holds barred sparring is bad, I'm just saying that as a primary training method its stupid and doesnt develope all the skills needed.
mmmm..try catching a punch in real life....this is just dreaful bunkai .......reminds me of the techinque Enoeda taught using your forearms to catach a punch......
against someone who's trying to rip your head off...this is how deluded some shotokan people are. Maybe not the best he can come up with, just the best he's going to show us, typical of Japenese Bunkai, comes up short every time

And you my freind are a master to make such comments about a man whom dedicated his life to his studies just as Enoeda Sensei.
Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is Enlightenment. ~ Lao-Tzu....
Do not critize others the aim is to develop your own mind...Even Funokoshi Stated this fact seems yougo on about Funokoshi:
