I liked your review of the 2. I posted a comment on your other unboxing review. I love to bodyboard and was thinking of getting into water photography. I was thinking of bolting the gopro (probably 2 after your review) onto an old rollerblade wrist protector. I mostly want to do still shots, as real water housing and water cameras are way more expensive. I just wanted to know if you think that would be a wise decision to purchase the gopro2 as a way to see if this is something to get into.
@TheBsanft Couple of thoughts. As always it depends on your final medium. I would go onto the gopro site and take a look at the stills that are on there. I have no idea how you will be shooting. Is the other hand free to “click” the shutter”?
@RustysClips Thank you for getting back to me Rusty. I would just like to take still pictures and probably video, since the video would be easier. I will take a look at the stills on the gopro site. I was just thinking that bolting it to wrist protector would allow for both arms to swim in negotiating waves, and allow a free hand to "click" the shutter for still pics, even though I have read that the buttons are hard to manage. Im eager to hear your advice.
@TheBsanft How about just setting the mode to time lapse and a 1/2 second interview. Forget about the button and discard the images you don't care for?
You need to change the music, silence would be better than that. I almost killed myself and didn't watch your excellent review just because of that crazy music!
@xslickxrollinx Guess that’s why they have 31 flavors at Bask and Robbins. Just a little info there is a button down in the left corner that looks like a speaker…click it and it will mute. Don’t want you to hurt yourself. Best of luck to you.
In my opinion the HERO 1 is much better - more vivd colours, sharper image and overall better quality. I have the HERO 1 and am very pleased with it =D
How about sound? What is a good external mic for the Hero2? (as small as the camera but still good sound quality). This is in my opinion the best upgrade they've made (the ability to have external mic)
Great side by side. The Hero 2 can now be bought for less than $270 w/ shipping, on E-Bay. I like the capabilities to stream video to a phone etc. Great for remote positioning, like on my sailboats or glider. The WiFi Backpac and Remote are app. $175. For my money, the upgraded 2 is a no brainer. Cases and fittings are all the same.
@shzze it is all budget for the most part. BUT...the Hero2 does better in the sun and there is some flex in the options and set up. Burst...slowmo...etc.
What type of video software do you use? I noticed the adobe comment below but when I looked at that product they wanted almost a grand for the whole package. I don't want to pay that. I am looking for something that will allow me to organize, cut and add audio to videos of my motorcycle trips. Any suggestions?
@T2003Cubs I’m guessing you are on a PC. I would try Adobe Premiere Elements. You can do what you are talking about and much more. There are many programs out there but this will do what you need and more. Adobe has a free trial. Order before Jan 2rd and its $50 off and free shipping. But also look at Amazon. About $100
@mrmidnight32 No I did not mix them up. This has been asked and I even thought this when I first did it. Just the way it is. If you look at the color of the shy in the Hero2 it is always the same. For me the difference in price was worth it. But I will use most of the new features. I’m sure the Hero1 will not be around for much longer so if you don’t need the features or are going to use only small output it may not be worth it. Low light is one factor to look at.
It's beginning to seem as if they just changed the internal aperture setting and added the wide shot, and call it a completely different camera, when it does not appear to be at all. Just my opinion. It's almost as if you have to get them both depending on the ever changing light conditions. For the price, I was very excited about getting one...now I am thinking I have to save my pennies, as the search continues for something possibly better. Problem is, "Better" costs WAY more! Grrr... ~Kevin~
@MichealYoungz Hey Guys, Im quite new to Go Pro system, but been in stills photography for years so judging on looks if image, ev range and colour cast it seems to me that hero 2 lenses got some polarising coating which definitely gives better exposure range for highlights and that yellow cast.
Thanks for posting. I have a Hero and i noticed with the Hero2 you get less lens fares in your video. Mounting a Hero on my bicycle, I get a lot of lens fares. Overall, does Hero2 diminish them?
I bough a HD Hero literally one week before the Hero 2 came out, I was mad, but I think I'll stick with it. I kind of like the more "golden" look the Hero had as compared to the white light shown by the Hero2 in some of these shots you took.
What is the camera options that do you use? Because I think that my GoProo Hero2 doesn´t record with this quality (I record with 1080p / 30f and is not the same). I dont know what can happend... and Wich program do you use?
@RustysClips ...Raw? And how have you put this mode? I think mine record is in MPEG 4 and I don´t know how to change, I don´t see anything in the camera options.
@1assasin1988 I would agree with the white balance. For some reason the color / white balance seems a little off on the Hero2 but not bad. I'm hopeing that is a firmware thing. This was an out of the box test. I did not do the Hero2 cineform update but there was nothing said about camera updates.
Shooting into the sun, my Hero2 had aberrations and could not quite see a sphere like in your test shots. Is there something I should set to get the same effect?
@MrGazzerk Not sure as this can could happen for many reasons. May just be the way the sun is hitting your lens. Remember...this was shot w/o the case.
@Jpxk17aa Ah ha, that's the problem--it's the housing. With a 170 I suppose there's no way to make a lens hood for that. Also, the conditions with the aberrations in filming were humid and cold so a bit of moisture could have amplified the problem. The camera is perfect but the accessories like housing and mounts need some R&D. Thanks for the answer.
Hero2 hands down, all the colors look more true, biggest difference is how it adjusts to different lighting. Hero2 is defiantly a step in the right direction for Gopro. Nice work!
On the color cards, is the bottom graduation portion suppose to be black to white (as the Hero shows) or purple to white (as the Hero 2 shows). Great comparison video.
@twoheadedelvis I was wondering if somebody was going to notice that. If you look at the white card on the outdoor and incandescent light…the white balance seems to be better with “WHITE” on the hero1. Not sure why but that is the way it is. At first I thought I had made a mistake and went back and checked…but that is correct. That bar is on white photo paper and just a black gradient made on Photoshop. My thoughts are that this may change as new firmware is loaded.
4:37 is the only scene where the hero2 side looked worse. Looking at the scene immediately following, I instantly suspect that this scene got swapped and the hero2 side is actually herohd footage.
@Varaxis Nope...take a look at the sky at 4:25. Notice the color. It is the same as the your time @ 4:37. The Hero1 seems to have more blue. Same as 4:25. You will also find this early in the vid around 1:56. Hope that helps....Rusty
Excellent comparison....pretty obvious that the Hero2 is going to be MUCH better in low light and lighted night conditions and that is what I needed to see before spending $300 plus on the Hero2....Thanks!
Thumbs Up for the unbiased comparison. I lost my Hero in Long Island Sound last summer and just ordered a Hero2 from HumbleOutdoors, it came with a 16MB Memory card, my guess is the Hero2 will consume more memory, so the memory will be my first upgrade.
While Hero2's colour balance looks a bit better, in darker areas the midtones do look a tad bleached out.
Even if Youtube's bitrate might not help in comparing the two cameras' sensors, still the outdoor scenes don't really show the amount of detail that would justify the "2x sharper lens" of the Hero2. Unless of course they meant software sharpening :-)
But don't get me wrong, hi-speed FPS, more contemporary photo quality, custom FoV, and further expandability are all wonderful features. :)
Would be very cool if you could upload the 2 clips you amde Comparing the new gopor HD2 and Hd1 and the different FOVs on Vimeo, that way others will/would be able to download the Original File, not the compressed Version, which Youtube crippels it to.
Is it just me, or does the HD1 have a slight advantage over the HD2 when it comes to the very finde details on grass/bushes/palms...
take a very close look! i think it resolves a little moredetail and/or the HD2 has some sort of denoising going
@kniefi Agreed. In the beach scene starting @ 1:37, edge sharpening on tree trunks is pretty visible in Hero2, while it's flat in Hero's. While i will not dispute whether such filters are good or bad for a specific scene, I don't like the camera's software to post-process what i can trivially do with software at home!
Please do a test of 720P mode, i am very interested in how the Gopro HD2 handles the 720p mode and especially fine detail in it, since i think the old HD1 model just upscaled R1 mode for R2 and R3 thus creating little "Stairsteps" on powerlines, edges of roofs and other contrasting areas. You would do me a great favour, by uploading some random footage, recorded in 720P mode
@SnwB04rder Not sure I can answer that one for you. I would look at what it can do on the site. There are differences for sure. Then figure out what you are going to use it for and your budget. Budget no problem...go with the Hero2. Sorry I can give you a better answer.
@WellingtonBikeCam01 out of case and I think the cases are the same...I cannot find anything different. Not sure about the lens on the case but they do say that the camera has a 2x sharper glass lens. What that means in the end…who knows.
@WellingtonBikeCam01 the original case will fit both the hero and the hero2, and im pretty sure the main part of the case is plastic but the part where the lens looks through is actually glass, even on the old case.
oh, how do you edit your video's? This is another frustration of mine.. The video is soo good that it crashes all of my p.c's Any hints on specs/programs?
@HIllCarver I use Adobe Premiere CS5.5. Computer is a HP that I got from Costco but is has some extras on it including 24 gigs of Ram to help the fact that it is not high end on the chipset. To be really honest I have not had a crash since I got this machine and started using CS5. I also edit from a canon XF-300. This YouTube stuff is not much editing but the system works in real time and no rendering. The Mercury Engine in Premiere Pro really kicks A!!@#.
thanks alot.. now i want a hero 2 lol I bought my hero 1 thinking it was the best, and have really enjoyed it.. but some of my frustrations with it, you have shown they have corrected.. like low light, or direct light. I like it. Thanks for the comparison
thank you best comparison I have seen, The image is kinda small so its hard to see the noise on the narrow setting is there anyway you could do one with the same videos in sequence instead of all at the same time.......thank you for the pointing into the sun shots on my gopro 1 many a time has a shot been ruined due to flaring from the sun behind the subject
@baita83 Good idea. I'll try to put a short one up today with three 170, 127 and narrow. I'm sure they are all the same shot from the 170 just a digitized zoom. Thus the noise. There must be something in the white balance because in some shots the shy looks great in the Hero also...actually better. But it seems like the Hero2 handles the glare much better of the water.
the sharpness and white balance is on point with the hero2

@kniefi ya the hd hero 1 little better details it looks like

Very good review between HERO2 and original HERO for the curious consumers like me!

Do you use any color correction?
leibow4 4 months ago
@leibow4 No. Both cameras were mounted together and nothing was done in post. Split screen was all.

Great test thanks. I was gonna order a Hero today but went with the Hero 2 in the end because it looks great in comparison.

Is the hero2 worth the extra money? And does it have the mounts from helmet hero HD?
SnwB04rder 4 months ago
@SnwB04rder Not sure I can answer that one for you. I would look at what it can do on the site. There are differences for sure. Then figure out what you are going to use it for and your budget. Budget no problem...go with the Hero2. Sorry I can give you a better answer.
RustysClips 4 months ago
@SnwB04rder it doesnt cost anymore than the old one. the original was 300 and now the hdhero2 is 300 also.

Thanks for posting! Did you shoot this with the cameras in or out of the waterproof cases?
Is there any difference between the H1 and H2 cases? Do they both use a plastic lens?
WellingtonBikeCam01 4 months ago
@WellingtonBikeCam01 out of case and I think the cases are the same...I cannot find anything different. Not sure about the lens on the case but they do say that the camera has a 2x sharper glass lens. What that means in the end…who knows.
Jpxk17aa 4 months ago
@WellingtonBikeCam01 the original case will fit both the hero and the hero2, and im pretty sure the main part of the case is plastic but the part where the lens looks through is actually glass, even on the old case.

oh, how do you edit your video's? This is another frustration of mine.. The video is soo good that it crashes all of my p.c's Any hints on specs/programs?
HIllCarver 4 months ago

HIllCarver 4 months ago
Good comparison. Could you make a comparison in 960p (30fps)? Thanks

Superb video. I was considering buying the hero 1 with the reduced price but after seeing this I am amazed at the difference.
This makes me think why do I keep my Sony V1U $4k camera.
Thanks for this comparison Rusty.

thank you best comparison I have seen, The image is kinda small so its hard to see the noise on the narrow setting is there anyway you could do one with the same videos in sequence instead of all at the same time.......thank you for the pointing into the sun shots on my gopro 1 many a time has a shot been ruined due to flaring from the sun behind the subject
baita83 4 months ago
@baita83 Good idea. I'll try to put a short one up today with three 170, 127 and narrow. I'm sure they are all the same shot from the 170 just a digitized zoom. Thus the noise. There must be something in the white balance because in some shots the shy looks great in the Hero also...actually better. But it seems like the Hero2 handles the glare much better of the water.

@baita83 Here you go a vid with the wide 170, 127 and Narrow comparison
