If it is to be the individual's choice to wear a helmet or not to wear a helmet, the individual who chooses not to wear a helmet should be inelligible for publicly provided medical care for brain injuries sustained in an accident while not wearing a helmet. Why should the taxpayers forfeit millions of dollars for the sake of the individual's recklessness? Make that a law & see what happens.
I've been hit by a truck on the freeway and thrown from by bike. I was riding a cruiser and wearing full gear, including a full-face helmet, armored leathers, armored gloves and steel-reinforced boots.
I walked away and suffered no head injuries despite smashing my head into the pavement at freeway speeds. If I had not been wearing a helmet, or had been wearing a half-helmet, I would have been killed or suffered severe brain injury.
"no head injuries despite smashing my head into the pavement at freeway speeds"
You don't understand the laws of physics. Daly's Law - Weight is vertical not horizontal. It wouldn't matter if you were going 70 mph as it adds nothing to vertical drop. When you fall off your bike the impact is the same as if you were walking & fell down & hit your head, it only changes if your head hits something head on such as a car door. Abrasion increases at speed but not impact on the highway.
@CaneFu My bar end dug into the truck, snapping the bike over into the back half of a high-side, converting my forward energy into a downward arc, pivoting around the tire on the ground. My forward speed was converted into downward velocity, so what I said was accurate: I was thrown into the pavement at freeway speeds. The only injury I sustained was two breaks to my elbow and that was through CE-2 body armor.
So in other words, you hit a truck first and not just the pavement as you said in your original post. You have edited your story now rather than admit you were wrong.
@CaneFu I didn't edit anything, I only have 500 characters to explain a complex interaction between motorcycle, rider, truck and pavement. What I said was accurate: that my head and body struck the ground at freeway speed. You assumed I meant abrasion rather than impact so I provided a more detailed description of the crash for your edification. The truck struck the side of my motorcycle as the driver changed lanes, snagging my bar end and snapping me into the ground at high speed.
@CaneFu I made contact with the truck before the ground, that is true. I never said that I only hit the pavement, only that I hit the pavement. The fact that I was struck by the truck and catapulted into the pavement at high speed and still didn't end up with a traumatic brain injury testifies to the effectiveness of helmets.
@BlindIo42 I have much more respect for that position than I do for false pseudo-scientific information that is known to be false. I am fine with you deciding not to wear a helmet (although I strongly disagree with that choice due to the effect it has on others), but please don't spread misinformation. You have a much greater chance of dying or living as drooling meat-sack without a helmet, just allow people to make an informed choice and know the risks.
You said, "Most motorcycle helmets are a lot more sturdy than you make them out to be"
Actually NO, they're not and I stated the facts. They are not rated to save your brain in a direct impact above 13.66 mph - fact. They are only 37% effective in preventing fatal head injuries in motorcycle accidents - fact. Sure helmets give some protection, but they are far less protective than most people believe them to be.
You live in Australia - I read they also have a mandatory bicycle helmet law there. I also read that the number of bicycle riders in Australia decreased by 40% as soon as that law was passed. How is that beneficial? Fatal bicycle accident head injuries are extremely rare but obesity is a major health risk and now there are 40% less people riding bikes for exercise. It's very easy to make the argument that your bicycle helmet law will kill many, many more people than it will save.
Motorcycle body armor and padded clothing is a plus but who in the hell wants to wear that on a hot summer day?!? Not anyone around my area. Sure if you use your motorcycle for nothing but joy rides go ahead and suit up - however that won't work if you use your motorcycle for practical transportation in hot weather. Can you imagine walking into the mall in July dressed like a Power Ranger?!?
It's possible to take every bit of joy out of riding by overdoing on safety equipment.
I've been in 3 motorcycle accidents without a helmet and never once hit my head - if you really want to swap anecdotal stories I can give you just as many for the other side. Wearing a 4 pound helmet makes a person top heavy and almost a guarantee their head will hit the ground. Orthopedic surgeons disagree with your statement that the helmet kept your neck from breaking - the increased weight of the helmet puts a greater strain on the neck and more likely it will break.
@CaneFu Can you provide a citation for any of your claims? I fail to see how a 4-pound helmet can make a 200+ lb person on top of a 400 lb bike top-heavy.
The strain on the neck is negligible, a woman can easily have four pounds of hair on her head.
Do your own research like I did as I don't plan to spend the next 2 hours doing the work for you. The info is on the internet on non-biased websites and there is too much info to post here.
@CaneFu I've done my research, everything from how helmets function in various impacts, the effect on the rider's neck, how motorcycle accidents happen in various situations, even the color helmets least and most likely to be in a crash. I've read scholarly papers in the EBSCO academic journal database and I've looked at all the statistics. I've never once read anything about a helmet causing more injuries than they prevent, or causing life-threatening neck injury.
I NEVER once said helmets cause more injuries than they prevent, what I said was orthopedic surgeons say that "the increased weight of the helmet puts a greater strain on the neck and more likely it will break". Quit twisting MY words around.
This info is out there, but if you're either too lazy or not skilled enough to find it by searching than I can't help you - now believe what you want, you can wear your helmet while watching TV in your living room if you want to, I don't care.
@CaneFu You implied that the weight of the helmet increases the strain on the neck and "makes a rider top-heavy." You used this as an argument against the safety of helmets, the only way that would be the case is if the weight of the helmet actually caused more harmful injuries than they prevented. There is actually more strain put on the neck by a rider trying to prevent his head from hitting the pavement as opposed to letting the helmet do the work of protecting your head.
"There is actually more strain put on the neck by a rider trying to prevent his head from hitting the pavement"
This was not my experience in the 3 motorcycle accidents I have been in without a helmet and 1 accident with a helmet. In the 3 without a helmet I never hit my head, in the 1 accident with a helmet I hit my head & this one was at low speed. We can swap anecdotal stories all day on this & won't get anywhere. My final point is that it should be an individual's choice.
I agree that helmets saving lives are mostly a myth and the facts support this if you actually bother to do the research and quit listening to popular public opinion. Wearing a plastic hat with a little foam rubber on top of your head will do nothing to save the rest of your body which will probably be crushed beyond repair in the average motorcycle accident. Helmets also won't do much to save your brain in a head on impact above 13.66 mph - that is a fact so do the research before commenting.
Sure you should wear a helmet every time you race but the average rider takes his motorcycle to the mall, or a movie, or to dinner - not to the race track. And I wear a helmet for those rides in cool weather because that's the best way to stay warm. However on hot days, I do not wear a helmet and if I had to I just wouldn't even get on the motorcycle in hot weather. More than 90% of the riders in my area also don't wear helmets in the summer, that's just reality here.
im one to think it should be a choice, or at least allow novelty helmets which wood help from shavin the skin n hair off your head ... but helmets were invented for a reason and they do help when you hit your head on the asphalt. but sometimes helmets like fullface ones obscure your vision and hearing and can sorta cause an accident and it was the helmets fault.
If someone chooses to NOT wear a helmet, would they have a problem with being left for dead on the roadside if they had a head injury?? I think they would expect quick emergency paramedic service. So I feel it is morally irresponsible to ride helmet-less and without protective gear, whether it is the law or not.......
Look, there are infinite times where a helmet would save a life and protect you. I understand that and know my risks i take. America is a free country for a reason, I should not have too wear one if i want. I think its good to promote one and own one but if i crash and die or get fucked up i know its my fault and took the risk. Too bad for me, but you are absolutley not going to take my rights from me and these people demanding helmet law changes should have their wrongs corrected.
If someone ends up a vegetable because of a head injury and society has to pay for the bill to keep you alive on life support, that is morally irresponsible, like I said before. Regardless of helmet laws. It is also unfair to all of your loved ones.........How someone can mix it up with semi trucks, automobiles and concrete roads without a helmet by choice is totally beyond me.
The same argument could be made that if someone chooses to even ride a motorcycle, which is inherently dangerous in itself, that they should be left for dead on the roadside. The facts are that motorcycle helmets are only 37% effective in preventing fatal head injuries. It's also a myth that motorcyclists with head injuries increase medical costs for the average person - do the research if you don't believe me.
YEAH, and I'm so SICK of my FUCKING SEATBELT! Those assholes are discriminating against me just because I'm in a car. It's not like I CHOSE to be in a car, I WANTED to ride my damn bicycle but my mom made me DRIVE!!!
You Harley riders make me laugh, my brother has one and doesn't wear a helmet but 90% of people that I know that ride them drink over the legal limit and ride. No helmet should be your choice if you are an adult but if you crash and end up a veg from a head injury, once your insurance is exhausted if your family can't pay, I say pull the plug so your choice doesn't cost anyone else any money. That should be a law. Not sure how you can have a seatbelt law with no helmet law.
What does it have to do with Harleys? Wear one if you want too, but leave me the fuck alone. Has anyone ever tried to force you not to wear one? I wear one when i think i need too, like when its raining, or hailing, or if i get cold. But there are a lot of times that i dont, and a lot more times when im in my home state that i wish i didnt have too. Pro Choice, end of disscussion
Simply because 99.9% of the people not wearing them that I have seen are on, you guessed it a Harley. I think everyone would agree that the whole idea for a helmet is not to keep you dry or warm. Just like safety equipment in other sports like football, auto racing etc.
Did you know that 90% of automobile fatalities are caused by head injuries? Why not require that everyone wear a Car Helmet? Many pedestrians fall down and die as a result of hitting their heads, so how about Walking Helmets? And if the family can't pay, then pull the plug on grandma who fell down inside her house and hit her head while not wearing her House Helmet.
Discriminating against people that ride motorcycles is indefensible.
LET THOSE WHO RIDE DESIDE! Sounds like the Govenor needs to wear a fucking helmet everytime she drives here car. Helmet laws are ILLEGAL laws to pass on us anyway! You want to get the helmet law dropped? Sue the state for discrimination of a minority. It has worked in other states. They CANT make certain laws for certain groups of people! That would be like saying that only African Americans have to wear seatbelts! SUE THEM!
