@N330AA If I were taking a trip across country on the train and could put my car on the train for a couple hundred extra, I'd do it in a heartbeat. It would be cheaper than renting, it would be my own car and it would make more sense.
@dgcasey0325 I agree and i would too provided the economics added up (long holiday). However i can't see how the raw costs are more by renting, so provided the great capitalist machine is working correctly i can't see how it is cheaper to transport your car 1000+ miles or whatever than simply transport yourself and pick up a car at the other end. I guess in part it's because Amtrak is subsidised.
@ultragor Auto Train got Superliner II sleepers and a "first class" diner in 1994 or 1995. It ran those with Amfleet II coaches and Heritage buffets and domes until 1996.
Amtrak Need's to take a lesson from Canada: "Keep The Heritige Cars". They're more comfortable than these Amfleet Cars & the coach cars on the Heritige recline waaaay back almost to a bed position. I miss those cars, Terribly! Amtrak i hope you're listening. Please bring back the Heritige Cars for Old Time's Sake. Great Video. Great Memories.
SuperLiners or AmFleet cars... Didn't really matter to me as long as I didn't have to drive from Lorton to Sanford. It was the most relaxing 16 hour ride I've ever had, and I'd do it again! *grin*
wow 5***** nice to see the auto train in phase III and that is not superliner! and that looked wierd with the amfleet then these really tall auto carriers
The vid was nice but I HATED how the recorder didn't just let the train past by...I hated all of the senseless transitions and elapsed times in the video. Would have been nice to just have seen the entire consist in its entirety since its very hard to find footage of the pre-Superliner auto trains. Great vid none the less.
Brand new P40s on that one. One of its last runs as a single level train, before they brought in the Superliner II's. Best train on Amtrak in my opinion.
@TrainDr101: I must correct my own comment. The dome diner is the ex-Milwaukee dome mixed w/ the sleepers. The coach passengers used the kitchen car, buffet car, & table car that were next to the full dome lounge. When the train was converted to superliner 2's, the configuration stayed the same- sleepers had & coaches had their own dining & lounge cars.
I agree !!! The last time I rode a Dome Car was on the "Lake Shore Limited" going 2 Utica,NY in 1994/95 !!! After 1996, I didn't see the "Dome Car" anymore !!! I wish it was back myself.
might amtrak train i like this consist in this scheme the most then any other amtrak colour schemes

9475 - ex-GN 1335
9371 - ex-SP 3602
*Note* I do not know if those numbers are the ones in the train, I just tryed to make out the number the best I can.

yeah today the dome car is only used in the fall on the Adirondack from new york to Montreal Quebec Canada
lexmarks567 3 years ago
Is it really? Last I heard it was in California. I know for a fact it cannot fit under the wire in Penn Station without a deactivation.
1985MANAmericana 2 years ago
Discovered that in the fall it IS used on the Adirondack, but from what I'm told it only operates between Albany and Montreal.

48 cars, that's an impressive Amtrak train! A very neat look into one of the more unique Amtrak operations.
