@greencashew Well, considering the person who made this video did NOT translate her words, you're BOTH wrong!!! Nena sang the song in English version after the song had become a sensation, all around the world. People had ideas of what she was saying and made videos translating only in text. When she saw them she decided to let everyone who spoke English know what she was saying. So greencashew, ALL of the words in this song are correct considering Nena herself sang it!

They used to play the original German version on the radio but I never paid attention to the words and did not realize it was even in a different language. Finally I heard the english rendering and found out what it was about. This song comments about nuclear war while over a fun musical arrangement. Even so, the prospect of such a fate is sobering. Perhaps they did this on purpose because of all the tension going on at the time.

I hate people who asume English is the superior language of the world, that every word can be translated directly to English. Words like Riech. There is no word for this in english, but if you were smart you'd say that it meant territory or kingdom. that's why this doesn't sound as good in English. It was written to sound good in German, not this language.

I do think that Nena Kerner sings this song very very well in English, though.
