  • To all of your with your wonderfull credentials, that and 50 cents will buy you a cup of coffee, I liked it and don't have all of your austere experience in music..

  • I love this song! If you listen with head phones it is amazing

  • This is boring. That lazy beat in the background doesn't match what the singers are doing, and really, it feels like they're singing to hear themselves. My least favorite part is the lyrics. God gave us the power of creativity, of imagination, right? Why, then, are songs like this so lyrically bland? Can't you find a more eloquent and beautiful way to express those emotions in song? Not trying to rain on anyone's parade here, just expressing my ideas.

  • Powerful!

  • Ernie start sind still yonger! nice performance boy!

  • Wow, Just wow. Isn't Jesus Great!! and worthy of all praise and worship for all eternity.

  • I love this song and group

  • This was when Ernie knew how to comb his hair! Great Song Great Savior!! Thank you Lord... for even me and all of you

  • @zerf1011 This was also before ernie developed 'restless leg syndrome'. just joking, giving away my age, just loved it when singers would stand up there and belt out their song without all the other distractions.

  • Thisis great I love Ernie I feel the spirit every time he sings.

  • Geweldig wat een stem.

Dit is puur genieten, oja amen!

  • i listen to this song at least 4 o0r 5 times a night...never tiring of it.......thank you...

  • I bet if youtube was around when George Younce and the Cathedrals started singing, people would have been (and probably were) saying the same things I'm reading in the comments here about Ernie. Everyone has their preferences in what they want to hear from whoever is singing. I enjoy the 'old' and the 'new' stuff. Haven't you during your life ever felt like trying something 'new'? Is the music bringing glory to God? If yes, then maybe that's what God wants Ernie and SS to sing.

  • WOW!! So much argueing over gospel music. devotionpromotion is a 19yr old young man that wishes Ernie would go back to his older style of singing, He tells that in here and you guys jump all over him. I for one agree with you devotionpromotion!!! I also agree with calvarykidamen that some singers change their style to gain more fans. It becomes more of a show than the praising of our lord to some singers.

  • @Bcroft39 I will not fall into the trap of this singer versus that one... I simply will point out that with age, even the most seasoned singers voices will change. It is a smart vocalist to realize this and to adapt to it. I will also say I love listening to good gospel music regardless... and I think Ernie Haase is a great artist either way...

  • @Fugate171 What I was talking about is that Ernie and the Signature sound are more show than the Cathedrals were. Ernie doesn't sing this song like this anymore. Yes his voice may have changed but if you'll watch him sing this song with the signature sound you'll see he's trying to hard to put on a show rather than just sing this beautiful song in the fashion that he sung it in with the Cathedrals.

  • @Bcroft39 Fiddle-de-dee! His voice in the SSQ videos is even more wonderful, IMHO ... and frankly, I think he sings with more passion and conviction in those than he does here (when he still really a "baby"!) Anyway, regardless of the "show" SSQ does, they bring the Joy of the Lord to their listeners as well as the Gospel! Hope they keep singing for a long, long time!

  • @FOOFOOKITTY I have a SSQ CD and I listen to it quite often, but my opinion still stands about Ernie being more show now with the SSQ. My wife actually likes them more than I do. I just think that the Cathedrals were more southern gospel than SSQ. Ernie is a wonderful singer and in my opinion he was the best Tenor singer of all ther tenor singers that the Cathedrals had. Oh What a Savior is his signature song. I just wish he would go back to singing it like he does in this video.

  • @Bcroft39 Of course each one of us has his or her preferences when it comes to songs/singers, musical style, etc. ... and that's only natural. I guess I just really appreciate the JOY & energy I've been seeing in the videos of the EHSSQ group with Ernie, Ryan, Tim, and Doug. From a strictly musical point-of-view about this video where Ernie is singing "Oh What A Savior" with the other group, it's really awkward when Ernie BELLOWS that first high note! The EHSSQ version I saw was better.

  • @FOOFOOKITTY LOL..I'm 43 and I've been singing since I was old enough to hold a microphone. That didn't sound like a Bellow to me. He stayed directly on key and never wavered from it. There are videos on youtube of SSQ with an entire orchestra backing them up. It's beautiful, but to me, it takes away from the singing. Me personally, I would prefer to hear a quartet backed up with just a piano and maybe a lead and bass guitar at most. But then that's just me.

  • @Bcroft39 Haha ... guess we can argue our musical credentials now: I have a degree in vocal performance and have taught voice at the university level ... and maybe you don't want to call Ernie's first high note in this video a "bellow" ... maybe a spirit-filled shout! ;-) How's that? And for the guy who thinks discussing the various attributes of some of these gospel performances is less than spiritual, all I can say is: chill, it's just interesting to us musicians/performers. :D

  • @FOOFOOKITTY I don't have a degree in vocal performance or anything like that. But you can trust me when I tell you that I know a bellow when I hear one. I've been around southern gospel my entire life and I have heard more bellows than I care to mention..LOL..Ernie's voice is a little stronger today than it was back when this video was made. If the people in the audience thought it was a bellow, Oh What A Savior wouldn't be his signature song today..

  • @Bcroft39 I guess there's no way we're gonna agree about that note, but if you listen to his later performances of that song, his transitions between lower notes to the high ones are much smoother. He's clearly developed his voice, improved his technique, and become a wonderful presenter of the Gospel thru music.

  • @FOOFOOKITTY If you're speaking about the first high note in the chorus of this song. then I can understand why you might call it a "bellow or spirit-filled shout. I wouldn't call it a bellow simply because the bellows that I have heard in the back woods small church gospel sings, make Ernie sound like the angels singing in this video. LOL. I guess your view might be a little closer than mine, because I've heard so many that were so far off.

  • They are all so good, I am just stunned, I miss George Younce. I think he was the best bass singer in his lifetime.

  • So young, same face... heheheh =)

  • @devotionpromotion

sadly, that seems to happen to a lot of groups- they become a big name, and change their style or standards to get more fans, to stay 'with the times', etc.

  • @calvarykidamen : No, They find "Godly Christians" to replace those that went Home to be with The Lord.

  • @devotionpromotion

I agree. ss really does great on the older songs like "going home", "forgiven again", "We shall se Jesus", and this song.

  • @calvarykidamen

They do a good job on songs like "Standing by the River" and "Gone". There older stuff is good, but when they became a 'name' in the gospel community, that's when it went downhill :)

  • @devotionpromotion : Still Up Hill, For The Name Of Jesus Christ. It is the song that tells that story very well. Why do you crittics have to do this nonsense.... Listen to the message. The Cathedrals are still one of the best groups. Stop with the satanist type of Christian bashing...

  • Why can't Ernie sing like this anymore? I like Ernie better with his older music than with his newer music. And I am 19 years old o.O

I mean, even stick with the old Signature Sound stuff. I don't like their newer stuff ):

  • @devotionpromotion : Stop Listening then... Or listen to the message..... God Bless

  • WOW! It's just wonderful to see & hear Ernie sing what has become his signature song so soon after joining The Cathedrals.

  • Кабы нам раньше показывали такие выступления, может хоть теперь мы были бы не такие тупые.., музыкально!

  • who married George's daughter? was it Ernie or Scott?

  • @rikku9zashi Ernie married George's daughter.

  • to god be the glory

  • thank god for Jesus what a beautiful voice

  • Ernie gives me goose bumps when he sings. He has a very powerful voice. Love this video.

  • I still remember the day I put my trust fully in Jesus and asked him to save me. My life was changed. I was only nine and went to church, but I was on my wy to Hell and a meaningless life. But Jesus gave me heaven and a meaning to life although i don't deserve. i will forever love him. Thank you God for what you did for me and all who accept your gift.

  • nail scared is WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! his hands a nail peirced (still has the wounds he has no scars)

  • I have listened to the Cathedrals for vver 20 years. I never heard a young Ernie Haase sound better. This is also the first time I have seen Mark Trammel with Ernie Haase. Thank you so very much for postong this video.

  • The Mighty Cats! What a blessing. Thanks for posting!

  • wel, these guys also do the song well, but just seeing George there makes me sad. i think i enjoy the signitures more therefore

  • Makes you fall in love with our Lord.

  • The only way to be saved is to personally accept Jesus as your Savior, trusting in His death as the payment for your sins and His resurrection as your guarantee of eternal life {John 3:16} ~> He is the Love of God; CHRIST THE LORD! Amen!

    Wonderful share!

  • to god be the glory

  • Great! Im blessed and touched.

  • How can you be this good. Rest in peace and God bless you and see you to the streets of gold.

  • I have loved this song for years!! and not just this song, but this particular rendition of it, by Ernie and the Cathedrals... makes my heart POUR OUT in thankfulness to our Lord Jesus Christ... Saviour of the world. Thank you, volscot :) God bless you so much!!

  • Wonderful....what a blessing.

  • Love that Ernie Haas...looks like Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) but man can he sing.

  • Ernie sings this so sincerely and GeorgeYounce is his father-in-law. Talk about pressure!..Prettiest verson I've heard. The song is very emotional anyway. Gwen Weaver

  • Thanks for responding

  • Do they say his side was driven? I'm sorry I never could catch what they say there someone help please.

  • it is saying riven, old english word meaning to wrench open or tear apart

  • it says his side was ribid, i believe

  • @bignathan15

His hands were nail-scarred, His side was "riven"....meaning,as nctexas1976said: old english word meaning to wrench open or tear apart.

He was physically abused by a spear in His side. May He Bless You Forever!!

  • maravilhosa é esta exibição do cathedrals!

Que Deus seja glorificado por canções como esta!

  • the live cathedrals farewell cd was good also

  • when was this video made?

  • Three of these gospel legends have passed on. What a loss. They are greatly missed.

  • Ernie is a baby! Wow I would say 25 or 26 is this video.

  • Maravilloso

  • All I have to say Praise the Lord O What a Saviour

  • He is awesome.. What a voice GOD gave him!

  • TOTALLY AWESOME!

  • Classic

  • this is my favorite version by ernie!

  • Aqui do Brasil apresio The catedrals quartet!!! beautefol...

  • Thank God for Jesus our Saviour

  • To me, the artist, or even the sound, is not as important as what the song says. I could listen to a recording by the Cathedrals 1 moment, then a recording by Mercy Me the next & not have any problem with it.

  • i've known mark since i was little. great guy -- he's an excellent vocalist and his heart is really into what he does. not my style of music, but whenever he's around touring, i do go see him.

  • Ernie is soooo young here but he is awesome!

  • If I remember right, Ernie had only been in the group for 2 weeks. :)

  • That is correct. Ernie confirmed it to me after he saw this video.

  • @volscot can you tell me what year this movie is from? i am a huge fan of this lost art!!

  • @timsloan155 25 years

  • @timsloan155 25 years

  • omartyo, try about 1989-90. that's when Ernie joined, and Mark Trammell left shortly after. Mark would go on to help form Greater Vision, then he would spend almost 10 years with Gold City.

  • ERNIE HAASE!!!!!!!!!

  • I miss these guys..............

  • absolutely and without question the most glorious soaring tenor and low bass combo with lyrics that bring tears in flood in gratitude for His sacrifice. Amen, boys.

  • The title sums it all - Oh What A Savior - videos like this keep reminding us to keep focused on the things that are above as the things below are temporal

  • This would have been circa 1990 when Ernie first joined, before Mark Trammell left. I still say that despite the later Cathedral's versions and the Signature Sound versions, Ernie sang this song the best in his early days.

  • He saved a lost wretched sinner like me!!Oh ! What a Saviour !!

  • This Show was shot in Studio A in the Grand Ole Opry House. Keep telling the Engineers you haven't heard anything till you have heard Ernie Sing. Well need less to say he didn't let me down and never did. While there twisting knobs and looking for limiters. But you can still hear the room in the mix. Good mix as well. Im thinking 1992 1994

  • I never thought any singer could sing this after Rosie, I was very young when hearing him sing it in person. But Ernie has the range and you can see he really means it in the same way Rosie did. And all these comments that are putting one singer against another are not helping those who need to hear Gospel music the most. When I was a teen, my choir director at school and church said if it wasn't Bach or Beethoven, it wasn't Godly. Hmmm. Think Jesus might disagree. I know I do.

  • Amen. Now Ernie has changed a lot since this recording. In fact he became George's son in law! go see Ernie and SS with this song. I love Danny Funderbuck but you know we love a good quartet . I will say Ernie is no Rosie. for those of us who are that old well will never be a quartet like the Statesmen and the blackwood Brothers. HOWEVER we can move on and enjoy a new generation! Praise God they know the Lord and are not down the road to hell.

  • Do you know what year this was recorded? Thanks so much for putting it up! God Bless you!

  • Oh my goodness, is that a Bb by George Younce at the end?!?

  • No, that would be a low G below the Bb

  • Actually I thought Ernie sounded better here, when he first started, than he did when the group finished up. Some folks that I have talked to who recognised the same thing, thought that Mark kept Ernie in check.

  • Deze heren zetten zich voledig in voor hun Redder (Savior) ik vind het geweldig.

  • I love this song!Ernie you look scared in that Video! But you sound GREAT!!Keep up the good work!Thank God you followed your dream!

You Rock!Littlebit12 from the EH&SS Message Board!

  • I first saw Ernie years ago in Detroit,MI. What a voice that still brings a joy to my heart and a tear to my eye.

  • I believe that Ernie, in these days, was an untouchable tenor singer. I believe that as in most cases he has lost some of the ability to hit the high notes that he once could. this is one video I have never seen. Absolutley wonderful.

  • Yeah. I've noticed his pitch has gone down. I listened to an old live version of Climbing Higher and higher and the one from the Farewell concert. You could tell how much Ernie's pitch went down.

  • I think this is the best video I have seen Ernie do with this song. I like Ernie's voice more in these days than I do now, but he is still incredible. I love this song and the singer!

  • Wow these guys had a great sound. Probably my favorite quartet in any style of music.

  • WONDERFUL!!!!!!!

  • Can he still hit those high notes? twenty years can do alot to a tenor.....

  • he can still hit them. i have the last album from Signature Sound

  • Oh yeah. I saw him 4 days ago and he still has it.

  • oh yes i know he still can.......i hope it still cam go on and on for a good while to come. Possibly one of the most polished Tenors in Gospel music

  • Awsome singing, music gloryfing God is great. it makes me sad to see great singers of gospel music change to be more like the world to get more people and especially the young people in . thanks Ernie

  • WOW!!! What year was this!?

  • Great Video, Great Song, Fantastic Group.

There's no limiations of who and what method

God uses. The intent is to evangelize!!! If that is accomplishedm there's no need to critique rbp02

  • The more I listen to this song, the more I simply love it. Ernie is awesome.

  • I love this !!!...I liked Ernie Haas much better with the Cathedrals than Signature Sound....they're a little showy for me....I would much rather get the message of the song, than the showmanship of the group.

This is one of my favorite songs!..This,and "Peace In the Valley"!!

  • does anyone know curtis elkins singing Oh What A Savior?

  • I absolutely love this rendition of this song. It sends chills up my spine. I can just imagine when we get to heaven, simply amazing!!!!

  • I used to be the biggest southern gospel fan, but lately I have begun to feel that there is something almost comical and too "showie" about it. I am not saying that Christian rock and pop is all that much better, but I prefer a more gospel message to the showmanship that seems to prevail in today's gospel music.

  • I agree!. Music is a gift given by God that when used for His Glory it will reach man were no words can.

  • My picks, Kirk Talley, Ernie Hause, Danny...In my opinion.

  • ernie haase

    calebB

  • The best tenor alive!

  • i ll say , take a look att david phelps and then say who's better..

  • I must agree with you. David Phelps has the most awsome voice I believe I have ever heard.

I wish he had stayed with the Gaither band.

  • Ernie said that he was only with the Cathedrals for a week when this was filmed and that he was terrified.

All these years later and "Oh What A Savior" has become Ernie's theme/trademark song. There have been many arrangements for this song, but of course my favorite is the current one (and E says the last arrangement) with EHSS. Having witnessed the power of E singing this song in person, there is no doubt that God is using him in great ways for HIS kingdom. God bless you E. WendyJoy

  • Well, like fine wine Ernie's stellar high tenor voice has only improved. This clip was probably 15 - 16 years ago. Check out

Ernie Haase & Signature Sound clips and hear him belt it out now...even better!!!

  • simplemente inimitable...¡¡¡¡

  • Apsolutely fantastic

  • The Lord has blessed us many singers in this past century. The Cathedrals are an example of that. I remember when the first song I heard by them many years ago "Rivers Of Joy."

  • i remember them singing rivers of joy with kirk talley, probably the best song i have ever heard them sing...

  • I also have him on the Live in Nashville video of the Cat's singing this song. Wonder which one was first?

  • Talked to ernie just a minute ago. He said that this video was done about a week after he joined the Cathedrals. He said he was terrified lol

  • Rosie Rozel of the Statesmen would be very honored to know that Ernie does this song so well. What a fantastic voice and to know he is still going on strong today. Thanks for posting.
