I, too, wish Holiday Inn had kept the Great Sign. Once an icon found on just about any U.S. highway, which was one of the most-beautiful signs ever created, you knew as much as a mile in advance that there was a Holiday Inn standing like a beacon in the night awaiting the weary traveler.
Those who miss the Great Sign can see footage here on YT of a real one in its full night-time glory, as this animation does it NO justice.
It's like an ice cream store introducing a new flavor: "And now, for the drum roll and the curtain lifting as we present to you our NEW FLAVOR! ...ah, ahem, vanilla."
I agree with the rest of the comments--the iconic "Great Sign" was an American institution. The new sign is awful and cheap. Bring back the Great Sign!
The comments below are spot on. Holiday Inn's new "look" is a disaster. It seems to have been designed by a third grader with a paint program on a PC. The once proud innovator in hotel industry is now a follower of lesser brands like Super 8, Red Roof Inn, etc. that changed their signage in phony efforts to look "new." The original great sign was indeed a icon that could be spotted from miles away. The new sign is not the least bit eye catching. R.I.P. Kemmons WIlson.
why can't they reintroduce the original sign? They were saying the original sign cost too much to operate in the early 80s, but with today's LED lighting technology, that wouldn't be the case anymore.
That new logo represents blandness and mediocrity. It's a shame because the reimaging of the properties is wonderful. It's a shame to be represented by a lime green blob of nothing.
Evolution? More like devolution. Whoever made the decision to kill the great sign should be sentenced to Guatamamo Bay.

From wondrous and special... to cheap and generic.
It started out great and has gotten worse with each rebranding.
No amount of razzle-dazzle CGI and happy music can cover up the sad decline of an icon.

Great if you want a sign that looks like a BP gas station.
