@dghhkjfsdfgkja you really have no idea what you are talking about. 1 what bad execution. 2 this is not lo-fi it's psych/shoegaze in the VU/Spacemen3 vein. 3 Eno never goes to someone else for execution, he's the one others goto. 4 They DID goto someone, and his name is Peter Kember aka Sonic Boom. 5 the reason it was "able to amass so much potential" is every bit as much because of Peter as it was Noah Lennox. I say these things as someone who does not like the Animal Collective. Lesson Over.
@mutepg58 the animal collective and related artists are, in general, unable to produce anything resembling a memorable melodic/harmonic combination. the music leaves you as soon as it comes to you, running by you like some kind of abstract particle. but, it's not an issue of accessibility. there have been dozens of artists over the last few decades that have produced much more abstract music than this that have been able to channel the abstraction into something memorable. it's just bad music.
wow, strange factoid there friend, since I've found numerous examples of beautiful melodic/harmonic combinations in their music. you come off as a music snob, and desperately grasping for theoretical argument as a disguise for your basic inability to enjoy the music.
@alliant i dunno about 'disguise', but i am certainly attempting to come up with an explanation as to why i can't enjoy this and provide an approach that i think would be more successful.
@dghhkjfsdfgkja You're not "attempting" to come up with an explanation, you did it and very well btw (although it was unnecessary and uncalled for). But taste doesn't need explanation, you didn't like, ok awesome, dont bash it. The other guys replied with a whole text? Ignore. You people need to stop polluting comment section. PS: not trying to start and arguement over here, read the comment above with a friendly and pleasant, almost mother-like, little voice in your head :)
@mutepg58 eno's role was to come up with ideas, not to actualize them. this was constant from his work with roxy music right up until the 90s. even his solo records are primarily performed by somebody else under his direction. what i meant to say is that the members of the animal collective, like eno, are not very good musicians. they don't seem to understand music theory well or at all. they would likely get their ideas across more effectively if they work to work with actual musicians.
@mutepg58 just to clarify...because you misunderstood what i said rather completely...i'm not suggesting that the animal collective get a better producer. i'm suggesting that the animal collective start producing other acts made up of more talented/educated musicians.
the idea here is...well, it's really just a different take on lo-fi. but, if executed more effectively, it could have been substantial. as it is, i can't imagine how anybody could listen to this and actually enjoy it...
why is it that everything animal collective related is able to amass so much potential on an ideas level and yet fail so horribly in execution? excluding 'feels'...
I appreciate his Wilson-like efforts to craft meticulous soundscapes in his music, but the organ is kind of redundant here and might actually detract from the structure of the song.
What was great about the single version was its pure, claustrophobic immediacy (the feeling produced by the jutting guitar and cavernous beats evokes some of Lennon's best work, and might have benefited from a reading by Nirvana) that was almost uncomfortable as a harsh and urgent expression of sensitive yearning.
@SeanIsaacBillings Nah, bro... the original was better without the organ. More simple. What makes this song is the guitar riff, but when the keys come in, it drowns out the guitar. Just my opinion.
I find it entertaining that anyone who so strongly dislikes a song would keep visiting the song's Youtube page to leave comments. But no mind.
I love this song with every fiber of my being<3

i think the primary problem in the bad execution is that he's literally tone deaf. i think that's probably *always* been the problem.

what these guys should do is follow brian eno's example and just work on a strategy level, getting somebody else to actually deal with execution.

Adding the organ adds dread and urgency to the sound in my opinion. I like it
