These girls are a stunning reminder of what music was in our time...when innocence was still believable..all from Baltimore, named after the historic Royal Theater on Pennsylvania Avenue...the lead singer worked for a time at the Playboy Club downtown, all were/are classy ladies who filled my radio and teenaged dances with beautiful wonder.
i remember hearing this on the porky chedwick show in pittsburgh, mid 60's for the first time,on vaction and this song has stuck with me alllllllllll these years and so has the orig mgm 45.
I guess I'm just partial (actually infatuated) with the singing ability of Sheila Rossof the Royalettes. I also like very much Arlene Smith (Chantels), and I think too that there's a difference in the quality of recordings between 1957 and 1964. So Arlene is put at a disadvantage, being a mere "Brill Bldg" girl. Now laura Nyro & Patti are about perfect, as you say. Patti was great in "56 when she started. My problem is I'm a purist and tend to try to split hairs. I love "em all .
I am proud that these ladies are from my city of Baltimore. I remember their neighborhood from years ago. I believe they went to Edmondson High . A lot of talent came from Baltimore. . Keith
I hope I don't offend anyone, but Sheila Ross singing He' s Gone in far better than the 1957 original by Arlene Smith & The Chantels. Sheila had a beautiful voice.
@jerseyguy242 = If you're only looking for a pretty voice this may be your choice. But if you want Soul and texture this can't compare to the Chantels. To understand better what I mean just listen to "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" by them and then compare it to Laura Nyro & LaBelle. The feeling that Laura and Patti put into that song let's you know what the lyrics mean. It's sad, heart-rending, and almost perfect. Music is my business.
Yes Syreeta did this. I love her version. I knew of the Royalettes, even have an old LP of theirs, but, I've never heard this version of this. This is nice.too.
Hiya, If you have the original issue of "The elegant sound of the Royalettes" hold on to it, as it sells for at least £100 on Ebay in excellent condition. I was given this abum for free at the time of issue by a friend who hated it. I love it.
I love the Royalettes !

Didn't Syreeta Wright cover this in the late 70's, early 80's? I like both versions. Pax to all from Ian Smith.Xxx.
