And to clear the Gaplus/Galaga 3 issue : Galpus was its own game but Namco changed its name in a later revision to Galaga 3 simply to increase sales. That's why we saw the 2 machines with the exact same game...
I think my problem with this one is my love for the 1981 arcade original. But for those of you that didn`t sink their quarters in the machine back then it`s a must try as it will test your reflexes in a way that a modern fps game can`t. Chris you handled this review superbly as it`s archaic mecanics are hard to summerize for today`s gamers... A great job. However will it make young gamers buy it? I doubt it but they have a shot at updated history right there, it's only up to them to grab it...
I would have given it a 5/5 tho because i always felt like this game really showed the full potential of the TG16. It was beautiful and they really held no holds barred. The music was great and very varied throughout. I spent a lot of time with this game. A true classic.
Oh my God I LOVE Galaga...but man this version is fucking AMAZING! Galaga's what I keep in my 7800...but after trying out Galaga 90 I'm going to track me down the HuCard and play this shit proper.
the "fork in the space" ("fork in the road" from OutRun) featuring a variety of paths is an awesome idea. i think this game really improved over the original.
Spida1a ! I want to buy ALL 3 DVDS ! I went to the site you recommended, and I couldn't get it to work. PLEASE help me out ! I really want all of your dvds !!!!
I love this game ! Actually, I think it's better than the original ! I think adding bosses and combining 3 ships are just a few of the reasons why I like it more !Spida1a, I subscribed to your awesome site, and I truly enjoy watching your reviews on THE TURBOGRAFX 16 / TURBO DUO SYSTEMS / GAMES !!!! The most underrated system in the world, that died out WAY TOO SOON !!!! Keep er going man !!!!
I just purchased a Turbo Duo and I will be getting this game! I remember playing this at a friends house in hight school. I had a genesis at the time and always wanted this game! Great review.
Galaxian is not that great a game but I love Galaga but Galaga 88 is not so good, I prefer the original Galaga but there was a better remake called Galaga Arrangement from Namco Classic Collection Volume 1 in the arcade and Namco Museum on the GameCube/PS2. Galaga Arrangement has 2-player Co-op and should be bought along with Namco Museum: 50th Anniversary if you want Galaga 88 and a Wii NES Retroport for the GC ver instead.
Classic shoot'em up by namco i offen recomend it,to any one that is starting out on the tg16/pce spida.Shame that is short but is good for that quick pickup and play at least.
I agree, it does end a little quick. Though the arcade is definitely a notch up in the difficulty department. I can rack up a huge score, on the most difficult run on Galaga '90, but Galaga '88 in the arcade I have yet to beat.
In the end though, it's a great port of an arcade classic.
Lol, Blaster Blister, you'll have to patent that name ^_^
For the record, there's been about four different games calling themselves Galaxian 3 if anyone ever argues with you! There is a Galaxian 3 arcade machine, massive eight player cinema screen machine.
Yeah, it sucks that the game has to end in a few levels here but I still love going back to it and trying the different paths. Maybe this is actually Galaga 4 because there was another game in the series called Gaplus too but I think that was a Japanese exclusive. Again man awesome review.
It actually came to the west as "Galaga 3" and the only home port of it for very long time until Namco Museum 2 came out was for Commodore 64 of all consoles.
And to clear the Gaplus/Galaga 3 issue : Galpus was its own game but Namco changed its name in a later revision to Galaga 3 simply to increase sales. That's why we saw the 2 machines with the exact same game...

Oh, also, when you said that Galaga 90/88 was the third game in the serie, think it would be the forth one, 'cause of Gaplus is in fact, Galaga 3
Corad4 1 year ago
@Corad4 I didn't say it was the third game. I said it was the third "sequel," which would be correct.

@VecTron5 Yes. It was. This is the third sequel. Whew.....so many games, so little time. ha ha!

this game would rule if it had a two-player co-op to add to the story like playthru :D

Bravo! Good review!
I never had the patience to go all the way through this one but, it is one of my favorites in the Galaga series.
It would've been nice if they'd went with the original '88 title and maybe even done a port of Gaplus as well but, it's still great for nostalgia.
