I must say, the acting was perfect for this film. Somewhat disconnected, robotic, stale... very sci-fi like, I guess that's the effect that Cronenberg was going for.

The Wachowski brothers wanted to make a film that had more "mass appeal" and Cronenberg wanted to preserve his unique style (disturbing, grotesque, cunning, etc). The rest is history my friend.
I never liked The Matrix - 90% visual effects and only 10 % acting. eXistenZ wasn't full of action movie but it was very inventive, creative and original. They should have made a sequel. Jude Law showed brilliant acting. Jennifer Jason Leigh was great too. This film reminds me other underrated flicks: Strange Days, Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity, The Net, FutureSport, The Time Shifters, The Cell, The Apocalypse (1997), Children of Men, The Arrival, Ultraviolet, Mimic, Galaxy Quest, Dark City...
