It was the Summer of Love 1968, Big Brother and the Holding Company was playing at the Cheetah Club on the Pacific Ocean Park Pier, Venice Beach, California..What an amazing concert, only problem was there was to much smoke in the air and not the cig kind. Eric Burton and the animals and Pacific Gas and Electric along with some local band. All day long, Ball and Chain was her best....miss you Janis
@skunkhead2006 George Gershwin wrote Summertime in the 1930's and it was a jazz standard of the day. Original does not sound like Big Brothers version . They made it magic
can't tell you how much our bunch enjoyed this super group back in the day.Vietnam and this group go hand in hand. I'm. here listening now and 43 years sound like yesterday. Thanks for sharing. 101st avn. battalion 17th Assault Helicopter company
NO Janis no Big Brother she was the heart and sole of the band, no one can put as much heart and sole into any song like Janis she was wonderful, we lost her much too soon, and it might have been drugs but she died from a broken lonesome heart.
Inventive, creative, raw, beautifully underproduced and REAL music. Great musicians and Janis, so soulful and powerful. Back when it was acceptable to be talented, not the best looking, and into the music for the sake of the performance.
I had long hair back in those days, now God has taken it away. My heart is the same. Hair, nor the color of skin makes the person, but that which is in his heart and thought. One Love! I saw BB play on Sunday 10/11/2009 with two of the original members. The hair is gone, but not the music. :-D
Well, darling, you might be pleased to know that my hair is about as long as Miss Joplin's was in this video. I haven't cut it in over seven years. :)
well, wat happened to my 12" pony ? don't hav it now, but yu kno, it was K^^L wile I had it, but the thing is I friggin missed goin to 1969 Woodstock coz cudn't get a pass from Fort Bragg, bummer !!!
I was fortunate to have seen Janis live and I will never forget the experience. There will only ever be one Queen, Long Live The Queen. We Love You Janis
Long live the queen! Comes close to Janis today? She had talent, guts, ambition, and seemed very real. And she made it to the top without plastic surgery! If she were alive today she probably would'nt even get a recording contract. Sad but true. My 12 year old niece recently asked me who Janis was. i gave her all the cd's, the movie "Janis", and several books. She no longer listens to rap or teen pop crap! Next i will intoduce her to the 60's.
dont know why janis had to leave big brother,i think things would have worked out better and she would have lived a while longer,i think she would have been better as part of the band rather than a solo singer, take jefferson airplane and you know grace slick, big brother would have sold more records with janis fronting the band as time went on,into the 70`s she could have worked with starship, grace slick etc then maybe went solo under no pressure.
i always felt that way about big brother, always drove me nuts when people say big brother weren't good. full tilt boogie never seemed to keep up with Janis, seem to completely throw her off during performances. another band i could imagine her hooking up with in the early 70's would be Booker T & the MG's..im sure Stax would of loved to have her. RIP
There are few artists who can be part of the definition of blues-rock. This video is proof that Janis is one, Hendrix, Clapton, Page. It's a pretty short list.
America is being taken over to eliminate the ugly American in excange for a clown or a throng of clowns. Knowone thinks for themselves anymore, obvious its the coach!
Janis Janis Janis the greatest the Goddess Janis the One the Only One here today tomorrow yesterday and forever Janis the Supreme Janis and more Janis
the viewer count says 10 thousand,is that all ? wow that is truly sad. the youth of america have no idea what is going on and no contact with the past, or only a very few of them do...this is truly great music here and no one is seeing it...amazing. its been here on youtube since may 2007. older folks like me - i am 55- you might as well forget about passing the baton on to the young-- they arent even in the stadium any more where we are running the track meet. Not my fault.Lets blame the coach.
I think it isn't that bad, because the name has been misspelled, so it's actually not accesable for those who perticular look for Big Brotther and the H olding Compa ny. This was done on purpose, since youutupe delete many other great footage. Glad it's still up here and alive:-)
@derr115 wrong honey. ive been grooving to janis for a loong time now and Im 18 and i believe janis is well alive through here music. every time i play her shes always putting me in a trance from heaven. no no no no dont cha cry for her shes still lives on
@derr115 They would rather listen to rap hip-hop shit and run around as junior gangstas rollin' on 24's ready to bust a cap into yo' ass...............
Must have been somethin' in the water...fantastic arrangement..and performance..in fact brilliant arrangement..Now Janice...my heart stops ..starts and does somersaults listening to this..unbelievable..but..this really happened ...alternative universe maybe..WOW..
To rrivets, if you ever read any books about Janis' life you would know that she had to scream out those songs to be heard over extremely loud bands that sometimes purposely tried to drown her out. She had a lot of personal issues and got caught up in some bad stuff but she is a beautiful person with a beautiful heart and was always helping out other people. Her voice is awesome and no one sings with that kind of passion today. She is a true icon of that period of great music.
One of these is an original and the other is by George Gershwin. The guitar players did cop some licks from Steve Cropper, who played soul gigs (Stax) in Memphis. Big Brother played with more fuzz and other effects, though
Absolutely loved to hear this artist sing when I was growing up. I never was lucky enough to see her in concert but now with Youtube available, I'm getting computer literate and like all this technolgy. I'm glad I stumbled onto this site.
Never cared for Janis. All her songs are just covers with her screaming what should be a tune. Saw her with Hendrix and couldn't wait for her to get off. The classic hippie crap that I hated.
Janis did Summertime like no one could have ever imagined. Probably my favourite of all her songs, and rarely played, so this is a real treat! Thanks for posting this.
Saw them once,.glad that era is gone. Boring.

Only problem I have with Big Brother is I can barely handle watching because of Janis Joplins demise.

I love Big Brother also because they could hardly play their instruments giving them a rough and raw edge like the Jefferson Airplane.
Axl Rose made a career out of stealing her best voice chops.
