The emotion in this song just comes right at you. None of us haven't felt this at one time. This is what's missing from todays' music. This is a masterpiece! Long live the 80s! Just take me back to 1983 and freeze it so I have to stay in 1983-1989 forever!

I grew up in the 80`s, and all I had was my radio. Lived way out in the country so there was nothing to do except work. My escape was music, I listen to more 80`s music than anything else. 80`s music was fresh and it was real, it wasn`t this crap today with auto tune and other crap that makes it sound fake. All you have to be is eye candy today like sucknia twain and britney spears to be a star. In the 80`s you had to have talent. That`s the problem with music today, theres no talent.
kids today dont no what good music is...they a good with flashy vidoes..but cant sing are compare to theys old vidoes..i can remember when mtv and others started makeing vidoes...i tell my age i no but late 70s and 80s had the best vidoes of all time...
This song reminds me of my first AM clock radio I got for my birthday when i was ten. Takes me back to those days so clearly. Great song. Thanks for posting.

It's all gone down hill music wise. It's all teeny bopper and 'hip hop' or rap crap. I looked at the top 10 just now, Rihanna, Justin B, Usher, Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert. It's all crap. Look at MTV now, there is not one show on that show's videos, Teen Cribs, 16 and Pregnant, Date my Mom. Its sad. Lady Gaga has 120 million down loads, this one has about 1/2 a million. Nuff said, this generation is sucky when it comes to music.
@bigdsears You are quite correct! Today's music is absolute garbage compared to the 60's/70's/80's. BUT, here's my questtion to everyone who recognizes this "WHY have we let it get this way? WHAT have we done wrong?"
MY answer is this: We buy the crap! As such, the music producers keep on producing it. We MUST find a way to say" Either produce songs that we USED TO LIKE, or we will buy nothing!"
@333harvey333 : I know why you're here, @333harvey333. I know what you've been doing... why you hardly sleep, why you live alone, and why night after night, you sit by your computer. You're looking for him. I know because I was once looking for the same thing. And when he found me, he told me I wasn't really looking for him. I was looking for an answer. It's the question that drives us, @333harvey333. It's the question that brought you here. You know the question, just as I did.
@bigdsears Its not ALL bad, but I generally agree with you. Actually, I can't remember seeing a video except for VH1 Nocturnal States when us "old folks" can't sleep. I think when they started the game shows and started getting real sponsors the game changed for the stations...I miss the days of the Vjays.....
Love this song and Suddenly Last Summer, but they kinda make me sad, especially when last summer is when you were with someone that broke your heart...you think about it the summer after.
Martha Was Smashing. Screen Queen Looks and a phenomenal voice, which hasnt faded over the years. The first time I saw this, I just set with my Mouth open Thinking, " Oh My God...." brings back some great memories.
I would not have picked up on that but you are right! Jake Nickleson goes to an empty barroom and ends up talking to a bartender that is not there. And then there are people in the bar. I think you nailed it. The Shining is the best scary movie of all time.

Martha Davis, the lead singer, reformed a version of the band called The Motels featuring Martha Davis, in 1998; as of 2008[update] she continues to appear under that name with various line-ups.
This was one of the first videos played on MTV back when MTV didn't even run commercials just music videos and VDJs. If you were watching this back then the next video could have been StrayCAts, or Billy Idol, Judus PRiests. We would leave MTV on for hours. I liked the MOtels then and still do. I think I have their cassett laying around somewhere
I agree with the other posts here, I've always liked this song and The Motels, I just wish I hadn't been such a music snob in the eighties, the good thing is that now, I do listen to a lot of the stuff I wouldn't have back then. Older and wiser I guess.
Truly one of the last great ballads of the'80's. Soon those atrocious "power ballads" would pollute the airwaves. But this is music and it speaks about the human condition. I was 12 when this was a hit and loved it even then, but now as an adult I can relate to the lyrics deeply.
i kinda agree with falldownhard. for me though it reminds me of the 80's. no responsibilities, no stress, just having to deal with my life and no one elses. i wasnt married yet, my kids werent around yet. living in california doing my thing.
This song is so intense and profound in its dark simplicity. Few songs are truly "haunting" and this one is. Sometimes I can't listen to it because it puts me in too dark a mood for some reason, but the paradox is that's exactly why I love it so much. I was 19 when this came out, probably part of the reason it gets to me too much now. Lost innocence.
There is a certain melancholy that runs through the Motels best known songs, Suddenly Last Summer evokes a similar mood to this one. I'm kind of glad there isn't a lot of saxophone in pop music these days, but there were a few 80's bands that could make the sax work, Quarterflash and the Motels among them.
@falldownhard Hey I was 18 when it came out and was a hit; I always felt the same way. My favorite time to listen to this tune is during a very rainy and stormy day or rainy night.
@falldownhard 100% exactly how I feel! True words. Even though it is approaching 30 years ago it was bad (OMG) it still rips at the emotions. Although Bette Midler's The Rose can do that, Only the Lonely makes one feel so deeply sad or moved and no matter how much we have moved on reminds us of past loves/pets/family/places etc. Well said falldownhard
@falldownhard I agree falldownhard just watched it brought tears to my eyes ,I was 20 . this getting old is for the birds I miss my youth and the 80s a much simpliler time.
today's songs, (as well as movies!!) seem to miss out on the simple. everything has to be computer animated, or over done! (ex. todays cartoons just stink on ice) My kids, and former step kids grew up on this stuff!!!! It's what I showed them- it's now what they love. I love the 80's!!
I'm 34 and I love this song! I have brothers and sisters who grew up in the 80's, but I have to say that it's still the best decade ever! I don't remember ever being unsage anywhere. Especially going to the skating rink with my brother and sister. It sad b/c I can't even send my kids anywhere by themselves now-a-days.
I was born in 1945 so my life is nearing the finish line, but I must say I feel extremely blessed to have been exposed to music from a very age. Everything from Bing Crosby to Elvis, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, all types of Blues, Ray Charles, the Doo Wop era, Motown, The Beatles, Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix, Doobie Bros. Steely Dan, and all the other great songs of the 70's & by all means the 80's, and even today, if you look hard enough, there is still good music out there. John Mayer for example
i thank god,my life was a soudtrack to such artist as duran duran,go west and the cure.when music was music.some times i almost feel like ballin.if i knew then what i know now,i would of cherished every moment, from 79-90.
I know!! I wished I wouldv'e taken more pictures back then, esp. of just people at malls and places as they sported the outrageous fashions of the day.
This is one of those songs that just comes together so well. The subtle synth in the beginning, then where the drums kick in, and the sax toward the end, just a perfect song. It just doesn't get any better. Pure 80's awesomeness !
Yeah... So glad I was alive in this time period of the history of the universe. Wish the '80s could have lasted for eternity... Well, I guess now they do in the land of youtube...
GOOD ti makes you a little sad. Hell you can come over and root my sister! No seriously if it makes u sad then go with it. FEEL the song and it can take you past this 2 dimentional mundane bullshit lie. Watch the video and music loud. And feel every note. Feel. Watch it in a warm stormy night. Leave shutters open. Turn lights out. Empty the pollution. i could go on :-)
Maybe this is one of the most emocional songs that make me remmember each moment in my life... since i was a child, All the happy and Sad moments , are mixed in my mind when i listen it...
I remember having this song in my head when I parachuted out of a C 7A over Sicily Drop Zone at Fort Bragg. To this day I remember that jump and this song in going over and over in my head.

I chased women that looked like the character in this video most of my life, caught most of them, even without DRAKKAR NOIR! phew!!! what is that horrid smell!
Hey...this song came out way before 1987! I graduated in 1987, and the music was not this good then! This song touched my soul in 1982/3ish.........it still brings me peace, as well!! :)
This song has sooo much emotion ,i am i lala land when i hear it,i am totally on memory lane to where i was 17 and the girl i loved was my life.Ineed a time machine to go back and do it over again,oh god do i
Yeah...remember the minidresses that were basically a sweater that came just below the ass cheeks? And then leg warmers! Drakkar Noir SO exemplifies the '80's. Take it easy, man.
Hoooooooly. I haven't heard this song in an incredibly long time. I don't even know if I was born when this came out. My mom played every hit from the 70s and 80s constantly when I was growing up and so I know this song perfectly but had no idea who it was or what it was called or anything.
Thats ok,the music and movies are still here.Iwas born in 71 and i remember going to the movies to watch weird science and the breakfast club,i really do and i loooooved it
Oh I know me too!! I called and requested Children of the sun by Billy Thorpe and the Dj was like how old are you? And I said 15. He so didn't believe me!!! I really wish I was born int he 70s so I could been there in the 80s!!! :P

I'm 34 and I love this song! I have brothers and sisters who grew up in the 80's, but I have to say that it's still the best decade ever! I don't remember ever being unsage anywhere. Especially going to the skating rink with my brother and sister. It sad b/c I can't even send my kids anywhere by themselves now-a-days.
chinitax24 2 years ago 5
@chinitax24 I agree. I am 32, and the 70s and 80s were the best decades. There is such negativity out there now.

Pure 80's awesomeness !
skiggy007 2 years ago 11
This is just too good. No wonder it was a smash hit for them.

Yeah, it's a little sad b/c it reminds me of the '80s. I can't tell u how much I could rewind time and relive this time...
nismoblue 2 years ago 4
GOOD ti makes you a little sad. Hell you can come over and root my sister! No seriously if it makes u sad then go with it. FEEL the song and it can take you past this 2 dimentional mundane bullshit lie. Watch the video and music loud. And feel every note. Feel. Watch it in a warm stormy night. Leave shutters open. Turn lights out. Empty the pollution. i could go on :-)

Yeah...remember the minidresses that were basically a sweater that came just below the ass cheeks? And then leg warmers! Drakkar Noir SO exemplifies the '80's. Take it easy, man.

I think most 80's pop is absolutely awful, but I really like The Motels.

Hoooooooly. I haven't heard this song in an incredibly long time. I don't even know if I was born when this came out. My mom played every hit from the 70s and 80s constantly when I was growing up and so I know this song perfectly but had no idea who it was or what it was called or anything.
Thanks.
