If anyone is wondering, the song being played throughout is called Adagio for Strings. (Obviously this is a vocal version, and I like it better this way).
I was never a huge fan of the gameplay in Homeworld, it was good, but just not terribly interesting for me.

@AdamkoSkiFlo I was thinking something akin to that but this is the message I took away from it... "Are you willing to sacrifice EVERYTHING for your freedom?"

So enough bitching. Let's get together and fix it.
Homeworld was a landmark game for the RTS genre and for Space RTS for that matter. This proves that with a good and well thought out plot and well designed game mechanics classic such as Homeworld can be created. Today's lineup of games are a bit disappointing to me as they focused mostly on visuals. I sure miss games with a good, moving story.
This game is amazing in EVERY ASPECT.It is sad how todays games market has nothing even close and good companies like Relic are being replaced by monsters like EA games that don't give a damn about their products.I also feel very frustrated when some kid that got computer last year thinks that in 1999 there was only retarded games and it kinda really insults me.I played this in 1999 when i was 5 and i must admit back then i learned playing it pretty good within a week. Thanks for the upload;)

Relic is really a great game maker. I hope they decide to make Homeworld 3. only problem is that after 10 years since the first game i don't have so much time to play it...

@Bladezki No, YOUR argument is invalid because Skyrim is bug-ridden and its "all-new engine" possesses many of the pitfalls of the Gambryo used in Oblivion, an example being the incredible exaggerated way weapons force hits people, making mercenaries slide for 20m in the ground when struck by a freaking ARROW and making you fly a kilometer when you get hit by a giant.
Skyrim is an incredible game. But is nowhere as deep as Homeworld is, 300 hours be damned.
Can anyone else remember the feeling of joy and acomplishment when you finally saw this the first time after finishing the game? And was I the only one deeply moved when they said that Karan S'Jet was able to be removed from the Mother Ship and made it to Higeera?
wait...i have played through the original Homeworld dozens of time...and I never remember seeing this cutscene...ever...did they show it after the credits or something?
Did anyone else never complete the first Homeworld game???
The last mission i could never finish, even started the game from scratch several times so i could build up my forces by capturing ships. Before i got to the final mission
wahaaaa!!!!!! i downloaded the game but i cant play it! it passes the intro but while all that pass it quit! please help.....i love the game.....it makes me mourn.....the song....the ending.....the war.....
This game is over ten years old, and still gives me goosebumps when I play it right through, from the opening intro, to the return to Kharak, to this ending. Epic storytelling in every way.
@gravitypsa Maybe during vacation? With me getting older, getting some nice education and responsible work I don't have as much free time as I used to anymore.
I never made it through the mission at the hyperspace blockade around Hiigara's system. 3 playthroughs, and I never managed to beat those pesky defenders :'(
Man... my number one favorite game, and I've never even beaten it.
I actually love Homeworld 2... Beautiful story... Exactly, it was so sad for me. I mean the story. But "we" done it. We held the line, fought, and protected the homeworld, Hiigara. The gameplay and the campaign is a bit too hard, but it IS a GREAT GAME!
I'm still so said because the most famous studios like... Ubisoft, Sierra, Microsoft, Nvidia aren't making new space-strategy games... They just focus on new awful games... The 2001-2005 years were the Eden of the RTS games. The new RTSs sucks!
We Held the line? blasphemy we shattered it, the accursed bastards who took our worlds right from under us and sent us to the stars beaten and broken right when we could not defend ourselves. Karma my friend Karma, we came back shattered their lines and sat back onto our homeworld, tired oh very tired...but fufilled
Well in my opinion the way technology is advancing now I wouldn't be surprised to see the colonization of our solar system in the next hundred years or so.
@solus48 I hope your right. I see a long cycle of corruption and violence coupled with a J curve population increase. I agree that our technology leap is staggering now. The problem is when a new technology comes to head with an existing market. Those making money on that market don't want to see it go. For example we should be well past the combustion engine. Note that we have the technology to feed yet half the world is malnourished. But of course I don't really know. Peace.
@Crush1me the idea is that we solve our problems cause we see a common goal that unites us as one so our problems become solved and anyways I think we would solve them before we met other inteligent beings.
Most RTSes suffer from the heroes trying to be overly badass, and we see so much of it, that everytime we see a badass character, he's meaningless to us. Really, the characters that really matter to us are the normal people, fighting against impossible odds in an impossible situation, and never giving up. Homeworld perfected making that connection with your men.
And that's why Homeworld will always be one of the best games in existence.
Lots of people died in Homeworld: the guys on the Khar Selim, the guys on the Scaffold, the guys on Kharak, some cryo tray people, Taidanii Imperials, Taidanii rebels, Turanics, the Kadeshi, etc...
Sure, you could capture ships, but what happened to the crew of those salvaged vessels?
this was two weeks of my life this game, nothing else can come close. I lived every moment of it, it really did capture me - I became the fight for the homeworld. This game was so moving in ways you just cannot describe, just goes to show how much an absorbing story counts in a good game. I've never stood up in the middle of my room and cried but I did when this ending came up after I finally got them home... it was personal.
@mikeasz For some reason I almost cried when they destroyed Kharak, I dont know, the fleet comander, well, that guy that gives the instructions, he is always cold, but when he says that Kharak was destroyed, he gives a little pause when speaking its subtle, but you can see that he was moved. I am not sissy, but I was moved for some reason.
And yeah I cried when they returned home, it was like I was returning. One of the best games ever, ranking with Freespace 2 and Planescape torment.
@mikeasz I agree...what an adventure...we got our people home...I felt proud and even shed a few tears. Even after watching this video I got choked up,lol.
This is honestly the only RTS that has made me feel strongly for those lttle pixels lost along the way through my weak admiralship. In no other RTS did it feel like it mattered how many you lost but the fact tht every one who died on the way to Hiigara was among those who could never see their real home really hit me deep. Maybe that's because I am an immigrant myself.
I was fascinated to play HW and HWC. Today, almost 9 years after these impresions, I feel as if Iäll never get anything similar to play on. After HW, I have seen much and tried out many games. I have kind of liked Warcraft III but HW still shines from afar ... like something you cannot get close to.
I wonder if we will get more quality games in the future? Why is everything so simplistic, so clear and devoid of subtlety nowadays?
I too would love to see HW3, or even remakes of the other HW games using modern technologies. Who knows? Hopefully SC2 will renew interest in the RTS genre so that a new HW game would be more practical from a developer standpoint.
This is one of those rare games u never see today. I thought homeworld 1 was better than homeworld 2 because it focused more on the story line and not much on the battle and game play. I thought homeworld2 on the other hand was better in game play
Karan Sjet and Makaan (evil dude from HW2) seem human, though, so it's safe to assume both Hiigarans and Vaygr are human shaped. Nothing is known about interna anatomy, thus they may be different on the inside from humans :)
you mean the narration? the Homeworld credits song is From Yes, and their Album, The Ladder, the song is called homeworld, but this song on this video is just like an instrumental with narration
Wow, toepebble. I know we humans can inflict great destruction but to presume that destruction is all the potential we hold is both naive and arrogant. Naive because it shows a lack of knowledge of all those peoples that live more natural lives that don't harm the Earth. Arrogant because it implies you look down on the rest of us as destructive but clearly you aren't involved in all the consumerism that destroys the world. :) You can go do something to help the planet, or you can be emo.
The human does inflict great destruction and someone living in a tipi somewhere doesn't change that. Its naive and arrogant to think 6 1/2 billion people living on this planet isn't destructive. I am sure my trash pile is above average in relation to the world wide average. I don't look down I just don't think we aren't going to make it far. There will be no Star trek. Just an opinion. The folk in the vid make weapons and kill each other. Where have I seen that before?
Don't derisive call it "Star Trek." You clearly have no idea what Homeworld was about and chose to vent your opinion randomly here. The folk in the vid make weapons and kill each other." You don't know the storyline. Don't condescend and act like peace is always the solution. Homeworld is about 2 peoples. The Taidani exterminated the Higaarans. Then, the surviving Higaarans (4,000 years later) were wiped out on their last world. Then the Higaarans fight their way back to claim their home.
Also, yes, humans can cause destruction but you conclude that is all we do. Clearly from your reply you don't pretend to think about improving the world, you're ready to just watch it burn because you don't give a damn anymore and accept humans only as destroyers. Finally, yes, people changing how they live does have a profound effect on the world. If people did even little changes in great enough numbers it would turn things around. Don't be the fool looking at the world crumbling and shrug
Open your eyes and look at all the mass extinctions of past billion years. We haven't got anything on nature and to say otherwise is just attempting to scare people. You Toepebble need to quit feeding into the fear. We should clean up a bit but compared to all of the pervious extinction level events, we have killed a fraction or a fraction of a percent what nature has in just one of those event. Wake up and quit getting your info from PETA, Greenpeace, and the other misguided groups.
Your assumption of where I get my information says more about your political leanings than mine. For the more broad "misguided groups" I am going to take a wild guess and say that is anyone who disagrees with you. How original. The world run by a tree hugger or a business man it doesn't matter, we are doomed. Don't be scared. Its just an opinion.
The human is on a j curve population increase and you say "We should clean up a bit"! Your funny. XD The art is great on this vid. Thanks.
I wish I had the luxury of thinking my opinion is the only one that mattered and I believe that at no point did I make a comment to that effect. It is amazing that if you read other discussions dealing with similar topics, the same side always jumps onto the bandwagon of saying what you said about 'anyone who disagrees with...'. In truth, I'm stating my opinion and the one of many on one side of the discussion. I at no time said that you are a self important tool, as you called me. Thanks.
I don't know where the "anyone who disagrees with" quote came from but no matter. I try to stay away from sides. I have caught myself wrong many times. I respect you opinion but tend to get sarcastic. I apologize if I have offended you.

I actually love Homeworld 2... Beautiful story... Exactly, it was so sad for me. I mean the story. But "we" done it. We held the line, fought, and protected the homeworld, Hiigara. The gameplay and the campaign is a bit too hard, but it IS a GREAT GAME!
I'm still so said because the most famous studios like... Ubisoft, Sierra, Microsoft, Nvidia aren't making new space-strategy games... They just focus on new awful games... The 2001-2005 years were the Eden of the RTS games. The new RTSs sucks!

Well in my opinion the way technology is advancing now I wouldn't be surprised to see the colonization of our solar system in the next hundred years or so.
solus48 2 years ago
@solus48 I hope your right. I see a long cycle of corruption and violence coupled with a J curve population increase. I agree that our technology leap is staggering now. The problem is when a new technology comes to head with an existing market. Those making money on that market don't want to see it go. For example we should be well past the combustion engine. Note that we have the technology to feed yet half the world is malnourished. But of course I don't really know. Peace.

what a beautifully and masterfully developed game and story-line...
Shadowoftheday09 2 years ago
Homeworld was masterfully crafted. Period.
And that's why Homeworld will always be one of the best games in existence.

this was two weeks of my life this game, nothing else can come close. I lived every moment of it, it really did capture me - I became the fight for the homeworld. This game was so moving in ways you just cannot describe, just goes to show how much an absorbing story counts in a good game. I've never stood up in the middle of my room and cried but I did when this ending came up after I finally got them home... it was personal.
mikeasz 2 years ago 57
@mikeasz For some reason I almost cried when they destroyed Kharak, I dont know, the fleet comander, well, that guy that gives the instructions, he is always cold, but when he says that Kharak was destroyed, he gives a little pause when speaking its subtle, but you can see that he was moved. I am not sissy, but I was moved for some reason.
And yeah I cried when they returned home, it was like I was returning. One of the best games ever, ranking with Freespace 2 and Planescape torment.

I thought homeworld2 on the other hand was better in game play

liamdude4 2 years ago
It is known they are at least humanoid shaped.
Karan Sjet and Makaan (evil dude from HW2) seem human, though, so it's safe to assume both Hiigarans and Vaygr are human shaped. Nothing is known about interna anatomy, thus they may be different on the inside from humans :)

Saralvago 2 years ago
The human does inflict great destruction and someone living in a tipi somewhere doesn't change that. Its naive and arrogant to think 6 1/2 billion people living on this planet isn't destructive. I am sure my trash pile is above average in relation to the world wide average. I don't look down I just don't think we aren't going to make it far. There will be no Star trek. Just an opinion. The folk in the vid make weapons and kill each other. Where have I seen that before?
toepebble 2 years ago
Don't derisive call it "Star Trek." You clearly have no idea what Homeworld was about and chose to vent your opinion randomly here. The folk in the vid make weapons and kill each other." You don't know the storyline. Don't condescend and act like peace is always the solution. Homeworld is about 2 peoples. The Taidani exterminated the Higaarans. Then, the surviving Higaarans (4,000 years later) were wiped out on their last world. Then the Higaarans fight their way back to claim their home.
Saralvago 2 years ago
Also, yes, humans can cause destruction but you conclude that is all we do. Clearly from your reply you don't pretend to think about improving the world, you're ready to just watch it burn because you don't give a damn anymore and accept humans only as destroyers. Finally, yes, people changing how they live does have a profound effect on the world. If people did even little changes in great enough numbers it would turn things around. Don't be the fool looking at the world crumbling and shrug
Saralvago 2 years ago
And let it be said that any planet inhabited by the human for a relatively short natural time will extinguish all natural life forms of that globe.
toepebble 2 years ago
Open your eyes and look at all the mass extinctions of past billion years. We haven't got anything on nature and to say otherwise is just attempting to scare people. You Toepebble need to quit feeding into the fear. We should clean up a bit but compared to all of the pervious extinction level events, we have killed a fraction or a fraction of a percent what nature has in just one of those event. Wake up and quit getting your info from PETA, Greenpeace, and the other misguided groups.
ghostprime 2 years ago
Your assumption of where I get my information says more about your political leanings than mine. For the more broad "misguided groups" I am going to take a wild guess and say that is anyone who disagrees with you. How original. The world run by a tree hugger or a business man it doesn't matter, we are doomed. Don't be scared. Its just an opinion.
The human is on a j curve population increase and you say "We should clean up a bit"! Your funny. XD The art is great on this vid. Thanks.
toepebble 2 years ago
I wish I had the luxury of thinking my opinion is the only one that mattered and I believe that at no point did I make a comment to that effect. It is amazing that if you read other discussions dealing with similar topics, the same side always jumps onto the bandwagon of saying what you said about 'anyone who disagrees with...'. In truth, I'm stating my opinion and the one of many on one side of the discussion. I at no time said that you are a self important tool, as you called me. Thanks.
ghostprime 2 years ago
I don't know where the "anyone who disagrees with" quote came from but no matter. I try to stay away from sides. I have caught myself wrong many times. I respect you opinion but tend to get sarcastic. I apologize if I have offended you.
