  • I really love his discussion here...Im trying to start...and it takes time .. and space, as he says.

  • I could listen to him talk all day!

  • I think Mike watt took Coltrane out of context, John ment that he did listen to the bass because he was only listening for the Rhythm Changes, but dont me wrong all bassists have incredible chops to solo and Coltrane might've copped some licks from the bass during his solos. But in the right context he listened to the bass for the chord changes so he would know where to go. Peace

  • wow I think he was beside an airport but I could be wrong.

  • @martyman5000 Yes, thats the Casbah in San Diego right in the approach path to San Diego international.

  • God bless, why the fuck do people have to ruin my love for Mike Watt with glam rock faggit Shaun White?

  • Who the hell is Sean White?

  • @Viciouskiller Yuppie scum fuck.

  • @endthedrugwarvision ah. Thankyou.

  • I'm a grout player too.

  • prac

  • Tashes don't half add some years, he looks like a history teacher....charming though.

  • This is my sub's brother.

  • Was that carrot top at the start? lol!

  • Mike is awesome! The best bass player bar none! true punk rocker!

  • I love that he has a Germs logo on his bass

  • 1:25

"Build up that kind of consistent thing. Another thing is where you put your hands."

It's almost like he's giving self-servicing lessons, hahaha.

  • I got to meet him a couple of months ago. One of the nicest dudes you'll ever meet.

  • @MrMeddled Bassist make the best dads... Just as my kids.... LOL!!

  • Nice Germs sticker Mike! Sounds like an airplane rolls thru at 3:12ish..

  • is that a picture of John Coltrane on his bass?

  • is it just me or does that his set up sound amazing? that is one of the richest tones I've ever heard. what is he playing here?

  • @markthemassacre clearly its a gibson so wow i cant afford it im sure haha

  • @markthemassacre he has an eden pre amp and power amp. get one of those and a passive humbucker bass and you can probably get close. look up his site, he has a gear list on it

  • baked watt = frustrated video editor

  • i like using my fingers much better, mainly cause i do a lot of slap pop, but i like picks too. Claypool, Watt and Entwistle are the best.

  • I fully agree with Mike. I like pick AND fingers. My personal favorite bassist is John Paul Jones who also utilized pick and fingers just like John Entwistle did

  • Joy!

  • dang i wish i could get one of them awesome germs stickers like he has

    .......or an awesome mustache :(

also wtf was the recorded next to a fuckin airport or something

  • hahaha he is BAAAAAKED

  • That mustache is pro o.O

  • @HumGuitar

    bitch please!

  • One of the best bassists ever, up there with various members of beefheart's magic band, and peter hook.

  • @MrMeddled amen

  • It's definitely The Casbah in San Diego. At about 3:13 you can hear a plane fly over.

  • Mike's f*ckin high as a kite. Love it. Watt rules.

  • he has really nice skin , too (not gay)

  • you know its really hard to recognize him with his facial hair changing all the time hahahaha the only way you know its him is by hearing the bass.

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Mike Watt in 1988 when he played a free show (as the bassist in firehose) at Glendale College. I was an 18-year-old college kid, and I just sat on the amp and talked his ear off. He answered all my questions. Incredibly nice guy and of course one of the best. I went to probably 15 firehose shows in the 1980s and early 1990s.

  • Looks like the Casbah in San Diego

  • watts bass... drool.

  • Yeah kids !

Prac' and stay sober like Mike Watt lol

  • watts is the master!! am i the only one that thinks he's stoned out during this lesson.

  • That was not a MINOR scale but...who cares. He got MAJOR right though.

  • @Vanjal Well, he got the shape right, but some of the note naming he does isn't 100% (the 7th note of an F# major scale is E#, weird as that may sound). He should have just worked it in G and avoided the weirdness.

Of course, if you're studying Watt and worrying about such stuff, you're kind of missing the point entirely.

  • is this video shot on an air strip, random jet noise in the back ground haha

  • love mike watt. FUCK SHAWN WHITE. what in god's name is he doing here?

  • LOL.

    Great tips from the master.

  • Such a joy. Thank you so much Mike!

  • I just love hearing him talk. He has a subtle way way about him, but he is very fucking intelligent.

  • Mike man, you're awesome : )

  • Helpful. Thanks.

  • mike uses it best though :)

  • Thanks Mike

  • I'm gonna only say "prac" now

  • i was just thinking this haha

  • @betweenthespleen Yeah, that wouldn't be pretentious at all...

    /s

  • @betweenthespleen I had the exact same thought! Watt = unit of power, to be sure.

  • @betweenthespleen Mike Watt speaks econo, apparently.

  • I love Mike Watt, I hate the SG Bass.

  • ...but the Germs (GI) sticker it's a must...

    We Love you Mike!!!

  • So true, but it would be better on the P-Bass he used on Double Nickels On The Dime.

  • Precision is a classic, but its a one trick pony. That SG looks customized. the stock ones have a p/u at the end of the neck, which Watt wisely removed. I bet he can get wide tone with those hummers, probly EMGs. Wonder if there serial or parallel wired. Is that a Chairman Mao sticker?

  • I didn't like the tone Mike was getting at all, personally.

  • Thats a Coltrane sticker.

  • "hate the SG Bass"

Agreed. The original EB basses tend to sound farty and indistinct - probably why they were never popular. Mike Watt, Jack Bruce.... any other EB bass players of note?

  • >> chris white - zombies

    >> jermaine jackson

    > pete quaife - kinks

.. wyman used one, greg lake, trevor bolder (bowie), etc.......

  • Don't forget the late great Allen Woody! R.I.P.

  • @mizzTbubbles15yo Watt and Jack Bruce...and you need more?

But if you do...Stanley Clarke before he got into his Alembics.

  • Great prac video for new players. Watt is a legend.

  • Mike Watt is the greatest bassist to ever live. Nobody can touch him.

  • @ManiaMediaFilms Absolutely! I been playing 20 years and I cant touch him. I never even think about the positioning of my hands, how cool.He must just live bass!

  • Mike Watt is amazing.
