I made a circle dance for this song, which I also sing.
To be human? To really feel this, will open realisation of Divine. Human plays serious at trying to define and image the Real, the Divine, but all of that is but expressing a human conditioning. Divine is known intimately and directly, not in thought but as a flowing-knowing river of Peace - Truth beyond corruption or loss. Living Music speaks of deeper knowings than thought can define, as Movement of our Being. Love.
im agnostic, and i love this song... sometimes learning about american history gets me all choked up.. religion is a big part of our folk history. we are human, we wonder, we tell tales and we write songs... this is beautiful!
@kynoos the fool hath said in his heart there is no GOD: apparently you feeling convicted about your beliefs or you wouldn't be listening to this kind of music
I LOVE THIS SONG... LOST MY BROTHER SEPT.29 AND MY SISTER 2 YEARS JAN.4 AND I LOVE LISTENING TO THIS SONG.. IM A CHRISTIAN AND SO WERE THEY...BEAUTIFUL....
4. There's some who were poor and often despised They looked up to heaven with tear-blinded eyes While people were heedless and deaf to their cries But what are they doing there now?
Chorus: What are they doing in heaven today, where sin and sorrow are all done away?Peace abounds like a river, they say. What are they doing there now?
2. There's some whose hearts were burdened with care They paid for their moment to fighting and tears. But they clung to the cross with trembling and fear But what are they doing there now? 3 .And there's some whose bodies were full of disease Physicians and doctors couldn't give them much ease But they suffered 'til death brought a final release But what are they doing there now?
Chorus: What are they doing in heaven today, where sin and sorrow are all done away?Peace abounds like a river, they say. What are they doing there now?
1. I'm thinking of friends whom I used to know, who lived and suffered in this world below But they've gone off to heaven, but I want to know: “What are they doing there now?
Chorus: What are they doing in heaven today, where sin and sorrow are all done away?Peace abounds like a river, they say. What are they doing there now?

This was written by the father of African American gospel music, Charles Albert Tindley (1851-1933), who spent his life as a Methodist minister in Philadelphia.
I'm not a Christian and I don't believe that you go to heaven when you die. Still I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, this song! It's about the mystery of life and death and the human condition and performed with such incredible feeling and artistry.... It seems so sad to me that someone could listen to this beautiful song and feel the need to argue about the "biblical accuracy" according to their own narrow belief system. Good grief !
beautiful voice but words are not biblically correct. who said when people die they go to heaven. 1 Thessalonians4v16-17 on Jesus's second coming the dead in christ will be ressurected, how can they be ressurrected when they are already in heaven or this song is everything against Jesus's second coming and ressurection 1 plus 1 is not giving a 2 here
gaito4-the scripture you mentioned is not refering to Jesus's second coming, but to The Rapture when Jesus says He will come 'Like a Thief in the night' to take away His Bride-The church -Rev.16-v:15 which happens at the beginning of The Tribulatiion There is then a time of all hell breaking loose leading up to the battle of Armaggeden-then the actual physical second coming when all men will see Him. It's not my words, it is all there in Daniel chapters 11-12, The 4 gospels and Revelation.
bedebedebedebedebebede..........thats all folks.....just as relevant as what you just wrote. Oh wait let me throw in a bunch of numbers and chapter.....12-14 Charles....14-18 Raymond and Joey part 4. You're right, they aren't your words....come up with your own.
Oh gives a sweet shit.....i love how people think they know shit because they are told to believe certain things, think for yourself.....stop putting all your faith in other peoples thoughts and writings you fucking genius. One question? What if your wrong? Just admit you know nothing and you'll be able to respect yourself more.
You aren't saved by perfect knowledge and doctrine...or none of us would be...but I think you have over looked the theif on the cross... "This day...you shall be with me in paridise (heaven)."
I've been to heaven, it was wonderful in it's imperfections!
