Great looking car the 55 is one of my favorates! as far as safe and reliable they were good at the time concidering average speed people drove in those days was 55.
the hill is really that steep at 7:40........those old chevys had gobs of torque, and a 3.55:1 reduction rearend(compared to an average of 2.6:1 these days) these cars are geared for that stuff.....ive driven a 1947(yes, 47) with the 216 blue flame, and a 3 speed manual up a hill like that feathering the clutch
Interesting to note that these commercials were shot with prototype models--the Bel Airs shown, are missing the front fender chrome trim spear that went from the headlights back to the middle of the front door.
These were well built cars. My dad bought a new Bel Air 2-door sedan in the spring of '55, I dimly remember it (I was 2 years old)--he told me later, he got it with a 2-barrel 265 V8, Powerglide, push button AM radio, heater/defroster, windshield washer and power brakes He loved it.
my dad was 4 in '55 his dad had one I think but I know he had a ton of old cars sadly I only remember pictures of them. ya he did have one like I said only pictures but would love to own it.
@BobWXXI I did not see any Bel Airs' without the stainless on the front fender. There is a couple of 210 models shown, they did not have the front fender stainless. Interesting how none of them had radios.
Oh my Christ on a crutch! At 1:38 I thought the Motoramic Chevrolet was gonna crash out of the monitor screen and smash right into my face, and like knock me out of my office depot chair , and then fall on the floor.....OMG!!!! glad I jumped out da way.
Back when the cars and all their parts were built in North America instead of buttfuck Egypt, as soon as the auto manufacturing jobs went to foreign countries is when the big 3 started their decline.
I have a 1955 Canadian Pontiac, which is basically the same as a Chevy with the same powertrain and chassis, it handles like a new car and is a lot lighter than many full size sedans now. The original Turbofire 265 V8 with Powerpack 4 barrel has surprisingly incredible power and sound.
In the 1950s, General Motors showcased its new cars--and dream cars--in big extravaganzas known as "Motoramas." The 1955 Chevrolets looked like they'd come straight from a dream car designer, compared to the stodgy-looking 1953s and 54s (which were essentially reskinned 1949-52 models, and you remember how exciting they were!).
Chevy's main advertising theme in 1955 was: "The Motoramic Chevrolet--Stealing the Thunder from the High-Price Cars!" And as you can see below, they still are!
The 1955 Chevrolet was all-new, from the ground up. It was an amazing achievement by Chevy General Manager Ed Cole, who literally shepherded the '55 from its design on paper, til the cars arrived at dealer's showrooms. Restored '55 Bel Air hardtops easily run $50,000 and up, so you can image the milestone these cars achieved! 1955 was the first year for a modern OHV Chevy V8, the 265 small block, which even today is a sound, durable design.

Just watch out while crossing the street. You don't want to know what that little airplane on the hood is capable of doing to you!

those of you talking about gas(petrol) prices, it costs about $2.55 per gallon here in Texas, about 63cents per litre

Ads from back in the day when GM had 50% of the market. Now, they're down to 22% of the market, but they are managing to gain back some market share.

At 7:40 they film the car at an angle to make it look like it's going up hill with ease. Actually it's just traveling level ground.

If you look closely the guy backing up the red 55 convertible hits the car behind him.
Why are there no car radios in these films? They all have the radio delete panel
fiddlerpin 2 years ago
There are no radios because they were experimental cars waiting for GPS to be invented! HA,ha!
