yea they paid him, but they didn't give him any knowledge from the game, the guy just knew the lore well enough to write a story from it, all the stuff in this movie was in WoW when it first started, ashbringer just couldn't be found until naxx came out, the guy had his own server, that would be the only way to get all the equipment on a new character that fast but it was a fucking sweet movie!
