The moment I saw Tear's eyes widen, and that dark figure began to rise, I lost it. Luke and Tear were brilliant characters. Luke started off blind and lost, and only really did things concerning himself. But then he began to care about others, and sacrifices himself to protect everyone else. Where as Tear was kind've the opposite. She was strong and chivalrous thinking about everyone else, at first. But in the end, all she really wanted was Luke. They're absolutely perfect for eachother.

It's luke, Asch's sword is in a different spot it isn't necessarily Asch's body either, apparently some time has passed if you listen to the dialogue before he walks up.
When you do the Contamination sidequests, it furthers the point that it's Luke at the end, not the other way around. Jade was afraid that Luke might end up in the same fate as that replica cheagle, but he said openly to him that Luke has always exceeded his expectations, and believed he will do it again.
With Jade's smile at the end, it pretty much sums it up.
@ChCa I don't think so: In the first part of the ending (pre-credits), you see Luke dissolving, and then you see Asch's hand twitch, meaning he's the body that lives, and it also follows the perfect-isofon contamination effect pattern of replica -> original. So, I think, Asch lives, but has Luke's memories, and as a result acts more like Luke (hence why he goes after Tear, and why Jade smirks.)

Though I can understand why he is like that, his character did not develop much while Luke had about 4 to 5 character development phases throughout the story, making more sense that he's the one to be back anyway (especially since he's the main character of a Tales game, which generally has very happy endings).

Even if Asch made a promise to Natalia, Luke has made the same promise, so that part just proves it's luke, and more, Luke uses his left hand to fight, Asch used his right hand, and the grip of the Sword of Lorelei is on the left side, showing it's user use his left hand to use it. But, that's my opinion.
I have just finished on 3DS and I believe it's Luke at the end. And another assumption is that "Star", a yellow cheagle and also a replica test subject said that he already felt dying once, some moments after that he felt fine but his replica was never to be found. Well, thats just my point of view...
If they could make a sequel to Tales of Symphonia then Bandai Namco could totally afford to make a sequel to this game. Granted, Tales of Symphonia 2 was kind of a flop. But it would be great to learn more about the characters and watch Luke develop even more in a second game. Personally, I don't really care about the relationship shared between Luke and Tear because I always kind of loathed video game romances. But it is the holiday season, maybe we'll be lucky and Namco will give us a gift.
I love the way this game ends. It wouldn't do it justice if there was a sequel made, and also it ends just like a good book - it leaves the players to figure it how they want. :)
@roseeyes1 To be perfectly honest, though I agree that it couldn't possibly have as good a story, I would definitely buy a sequel if they made one. I just love the character's of TotA so much. Heck I'd buy the sequel to ToV. THe characters draw me in and even though the story probably wouldn't be as good, the gameplay and charaacters would keep me going. :)
i honestly don't think the ending part is that important especially when you'll made to guess whoever Luke/Asch that appears in the Tataroo Valley. For girl gamers you might hope it should be Luke or Asch to pair with Tear. But overall the story is amazing even with such an open ending.

@SomeJDude really? im the exact opposite. i thought the ending was beautiful. how luke sacrifices himself in the end, and then everyone gathers in the valley where tear and luke first met. tear sings her song. they begin to walk away but see luke, who they thought was dead. tear and the rest run up to meet him and the game ends with a vague clip of luke. It makes me cry every time! oh well, everyone has their opinions i guess. :P (the beautiful and emotional music in this scene is a bonus)

Just finished the game to satisfy my nostalgia and missed this ending because I turned the console off at credits but damn, that ending is so corny LOL
Probably my fave game of all time. I had a nostalgic moment and felt that I had to finish this game again. I rushed through the game to progress the story, ignoring any side quests and good treasure and it still took me 40 hours to finish.
I hope there's a sequel; hopefully not as bad as Symphonia 2
I agree what Tales of Abyss had the best tales of ending to any tales game. Pretty much, this reminded me of watching the Ending of FF Crisis core for psp. I really hope to see a sequal sometime. Maybe for the PS Vita.

My eyes watered the 1st, 2nd, 3rd times I beat the game, and this is coming from a 18 year old straight guy. Best ending ever for one of the best games ever! I was so tempted to stand up and clap at my T.V.

I think the reason a lot of people like Abyss the best is because in games like Symphonia and Vesperia the main characters are already fully developed. They already have a strong set of morals and they don't let anything obstruct their paths to justice, while Luke is spoiled, whiny, and selfish and then transforms into an actual hero whom looks out for others. He was flawed at the beginning which a lot more people can relate to and then his transformation gives others hope

This ending is so bad-ass! I mean the look at Jades smile just brings you joy and tears, because hes such a bad-ass character you`ll never find anywhere else! then theres of course Luke, the lad who changed from the most annoyning character to the biggest hero ever!!!

Can someone also tell me why did Luke take so long to appear?, Why did his hair grow back long {I mean I was wondering did he fuse with Asch or did it just grow back?, and whats with his eyes they seemed darker when they showed them in the end or maybe its just the shadows, but anyway why did they also block the eyes? But, anyway.. I want more episodes for this anime, it makes me sad that it ended.
I personally think Tales of the Abyss is the one of the best animes I've seen. I haven't played the game yet, but I heard it was good and I want to. I think that the ending was pretty good and it touched me, but Luke never got to confess to Tear and Tear never got to confess to Luke. But still I think mostly everything of the anime was awesome and exciting and made me wanting more [even right now I want more episodes].
Anyways, I haven't beat the game yet but I spoke to Star in Sheridan and he provided me with some info. Star confirms that he is the original, and when he died the replica disappeared and Star revived again.
So it's ashc body but with both of their memories.

The events in the game take place over like a year , Luke was 17 at the begining of the game , 18 at the end , the coming of age takes place at 20 ( or is it 21? ) point is it went 1 year ( game events ) then a 2 year time skip.
It isn't the original. It is Luke and Asch's bodies fused with Luke being the dominate one.. Look at the way the sword is set up on his back. For left handed use. He also didn't have the defects in his hair , meaning he had to be using Asch's body

After all these years.. I still remember this ending. This was one of the games back in my childhood that actually spoke to me. Even now when I see it, the emotions come back =) I truly love Tales of the Abyss one of the best games in its time.
Though I think that Yuri is the best pro. He's mature, a lot of Tales mains are kinda reckless and hardheaded or just plain silly. Luke is probably the worse. He's annoying and dramatically changes. Lloyd is my fave pro, start small and gradually learned and grew stronger. But this game was pretty awesome. I liked all the chars Vesperia I didn't like many. Overall, ToS. Best storyline and everything made you go O_O SHIT! But yeah

I really like this game because it seemed to have a more personal tone to it like with his diary telling the story and Van who had ties to Tear and Luke. Throughout the game you can tell they like each other but its not until the end that they (she) shows it. I think thats what really makes this ending great, the situation/ mystery, hell even the music is good. I bet anyone who has played this game will call this ending heartbreaking above all else.

Didn't the anime state that two years passed? If so, then Luke's hair would be longer, his sword placement is the same as well as his face, and the voice is Luke's. So, I'm assuming that was Luke, plus, he said he promised someone (ie: tear) he would come back.
Personally, I think it's a fusion between Luke and Asch. Look at the hair color. It's Asch's. But look at the face and the shape of his hair on the front - definitely Luke's. When Luke got a hold of Asch's body, he must have fused in order to survive (Asch was dying and Luke's fonons would separate, so, both saved each other). Jade must have thought of this, and that's why he seemed happy (or relieved) when he saw 'Luke'.
it has to be asch. Because luke never gained the confidence to except that since he is a replica. When he was holding asch's dead body at the end. He told Yulia that he wwanted to give asch his life back because luke pretty much stole it from him. IDK it could be possible that he is luke with achs;s body but its just not likely.

a game i would cry on for a thousand times. i watched the anime. it wasnt that amazing. it lacked a lot f elements. there isn't much comedy, the background music during drama scenes were just wrong, fight scenes were like those of 90's for animes and the feeling of being with their party is absent as well... so i dont suggest it to those who dont know the game. though those you played and finished the game can watch it to refresh their memories of the beauty of the game :)

This is seriously the most beautiful, heart-wrenching ending to a Tales game. I cry almost every time I see it. Every little detail, every second of this music really resonates the message that the ones we love never truly die.
We'll see how Xillia does if it gets localized, but Abyss is hands-down the best Tales game ever. Vesperia can't even beat it, and I was a total nutcase for Vesperia. Something about Abyss holds a special place in my heart. Ah~yay for Tales! x3

The other Tales of games I've played have been really great (cause I seriously loved Vesperia and Symphonia) but Tales of the Abyss was just so unique, touching, beautiful and just had an amazing story that made you get goosebumps of emotion at certain parts. Indeed! I think for me, Abyss is so special cause when I was playing the game, that was when I got really sick with an eating disorder. And then after getting released for about 3 months, when I started playing Abyss again, I could see myself in Luke's whiny personality. The transformation of him was akin to my own.

Vesperia probably had the best (and most badass) protagonist in the series, but the ending for Vesperia was disappointing as shit. Both Abyss and Symphonia had the best endings ive possibly ever seen in video games. Abyss mightve had a slightly better ending because never before have I just sat in silence staring at my screen in shock of how awsome and beautiful it was.
I prefered Symphonia's story over Vesperia or Abyss just because the plot twists nearly made me shit myself at some points.
Even the way he carries the sword its obviously Luke Namco just created some suspanse and they succedded in making the game famous due to its storyline and because so many people argued who it was they even made the game more famous , but the thing is DETAILS reveal everything

Just finished the game to satisfy my nostalgia and missed this ending because I turned the console off at credits but damn, that ending is so corny LOL
Probably my fave game of all time. I had a nostalgic moment and felt that I had to finish this game again. I rushed through the game to progress the story, ignoring any side quests and good treasure and it still took me 40 hours to finish.
I hope there's a sequel; hopefully not as bad as Symphonia 2

I think the reason a lot of people like Abyss the best is because in games like Symphonia and Vesperia the main characters are already fully developed. They already have a strong set of morals and they don't let anything obstruct their paths to justice, while Luke is spoiled, whiny, and selfish and then transforms into an actual hero whom looks out for others. He was flawed at the beginning which a lot more people can relate to and then his transformation gives others hope

Sooo...Did Luke and Asch fuse at the end? The sword is on the side for Luke, but if it were Asch's body then it was still be right handed...Plus its a combo of the twos hair..I don't think its as simple as Luke taking Asch's body, then they would of just made it look like asch...>.> Great game...Amazing ending...But I wish it didn't leave that question :'(

This ending is so bad-ass! I mean the look at Jades smile just brings you joy and tears, because hes such a bad-ass character you`ll never find anywhere else! then theres of course Luke, the lad who changed from the most annoyning character to the biggest hero ever!!!

I personally think Tales of the Abyss is the one of the best animes I've seen. I haven't played the game yet, but I heard it was good and I want to. I think that the ending was pretty good and it touched me, but Luke never got to confess to Tear and Tear never got to confess to Luke. But still I think mostly everything of the anime was awesome and exciting and made me wanting more [even right now I want more episodes].

Anyways, I haven't beat the game yet but I spoke to Star in Sheridan and he provided me with some info. Star confirms that he is the original, and when he died the replica disappeared and Star revived again.
So it's ashc body but with both of their memories.

The events in the game take place over like a year , Luke was 17 at the begining of the game , 18 at the end , the coming of age takes place at 20 ( or is it 21? ) point is it went 1 year ( game events ) then a 2 year time skip.
It isn't the original. It is Luke and Asch's bodies fused with Luke being the dominate one.. Look at the way the sword is set up on his back. For left handed use. He also didn't have the defects in his hair , meaning he had to be using Asch's body

Though I think that Yuri is the best pro. He's mature, a lot of Tales mains are kinda reckless and hardheaded or just plain silly. Luke is probably the worse. He's annoying and dramatically changes. Lloyd is my fave pro, start small and gradually learned and grew stronger. But this game was pretty awesome. I liked all the chars Vesperia I didn't like many. Overall, ToS. Best storyline and everything made you go O_O SHIT! But yeah

I really like this game because it seemed to have a more personal tone to it like with his diary telling the story and Van who had ties to Tear and Luke. Throughout the game you can tell they like each other but its not until the end that they (she) shows it. I think thats what really makes this ending great, the situation/ mystery, hell even the music is good. I bet anyone who has played this game will call this ending heartbreaking above all else.

Didn't the anime state that two years passed? If so, then Luke's hair would be longer, his sword placement is the same as well as his face, and the voice is Luke's. So, I'm assuming that was Luke, plus, he said he promised someone (ie: tear) he would come back.

Personally, I think it's a fusion between Luke and Asch. Look at the hair color. It's Asch's. But look at the face and the shape of his hair on the front - definitely Luke's. When Luke got a hold of Asch's body, he must have fused in order to survive (Asch was dying and Luke's fonons would separate, so, both saved each other). Jade must have thought of this, and that's why he seemed happy (or relieved) when he saw 'Luke'.
Or... it's just Luke. Period.

a game i would cry on for a thousand times. i watched the anime. it wasnt that amazing. it lacked a lot f elements. there isn't much comedy, the background music during drama scenes were just wrong, fight scenes were like those of 90's for animes and the feeling of being with their party is absent as well... so i dont suggest it to those who dont know the game. though those you played and finished the game can watch it to refresh their memories of the beauty of the game :)

This is seriously the most beautiful, heart-wrenching ending to a Tales game. I cry almost every time I see it. Every little detail, every second of this music really resonates the message that the ones we love never truly die.
We'll see how Xillia does if it gets localized, but Abyss is hands-down the best Tales game ever. Vesperia can't even beat it, and I was a total nutcase for Vesperia. Something about Abyss holds a special place in my heart. Ah~yay for Tales! x3

The other Tales of games I've played have been really great (cause I seriously loved Vesperia and Symphonia) but Tales of the Abyss was just so unique, touching, beautiful and just had an amazing story that made you get goosebumps of emotion at certain parts. Indeed! I think for me, Abyss is so special cause when I was playing the game, that was when I got really sick with an eating disorder. And then after getting released for about 3 months, when I started playing Abyss again, I could see myself in Luke's whiny personality. The transformation of him was akin to my own.

Vesperia probably had the best (and most badass) protagonist in the series, but the ending for Vesperia was disappointing as shit. Both Abyss and Symphonia had the best endings ive possibly ever seen in video games. Abyss mightve had a slightly better ending because never before have I just sat in silence staring at my screen in shock of how awsome and beautiful it was.
I prefered Symphonia's story over Vesperia or Abyss just because the plot twists nearly made me shit myself at some points.
