funny that big brands aren't aware of their audience... they want to release an idea of safe sex, but their images deter ppl from using them. interesting.
Here is what I don't understand. The whole speech makes it sound like only a man in Congo can buy a condom. Why aren't the women encouraged to use a condom and educated about it importance in preventing not only unwanted pregnancy, but also spread of STD and HIV. As a woman I don't need provocative labels or pictures to make me want to buy a condom, because when I go to a store to get one it is with one intent I do it...to protect myself.
@lovena64 you also assume the women where you are talking about have the same day-to-day priorities, access to education and opportunity to even MAKE choices.
The whole point of this talk was to not project your beliefs onto others.
@WildBuck007 Clearly you live in America. Sorry, but you don't have a 1st world health care system, so I'm not surprised that the Congo has better treatment rates.
@UltimateDimension Firstly I disagree that a condom is protective barrier that means you don't trust someone. It's protecting them against a disease they may not know they have. Secondly leading on from this point, if you love someone, sure you might want to have children with them, but that doesn't mean you should have them unplanned in your life, or as many children as you can produce. Finally even if this is what you believe, you can't educate everyone about these values
You people do realize that one nation will never drag another from shit filled hole if said nation doesn't want to get out of that hole? They are where they are because they are who they are mostly.
@electronikita yes, that long history of colonialism, subjugation and violence at the hands of European colonial powers has nothing to do with their present sociocultural infrastructure.
Just like the civil war has nothing to do with the development of America. Or WWII has nothing to do with the present state of Germany.

too assertive and not humble enough. it could be true but her tone makes it sound like it's the only possible reason for condoms not to be used... also although the idea is compelling, she not backing it up *at all* with any statistics, even a poll would have done with the target consumer as she says.
bad talk: All she did was literally compare the cover of condoms. She also fails to acknowledge that even the private industry is only 3%. The Congo would be cured of cancer if free condoms had sluts on them. (This is the closest "cure" she suggests)
Can we stop having attractive women talking about sex and condoms it gives women a bad image like all attractive woman is good for is giving sex talks. Like all women can sell is bras and girdles. I bet you have a lot of fun giving a lot of attention to perverts. I think if you give more attention to women who actually do something more than talk about sex women would not be just sex workers. Hmm. Maybe?
@electronikita Because they're just as human as you are, just born in unfortunate circumstances. It could've just as easliy been you. The reason to help and educate them could be a simple act of empathy or a simple investment for the future, because a more educated and healty population is a more helpful and contributing population. For a better tomorrow, we have to act today and every simplest positive effort today can significantly change the future. So please, try to not be so arrogant.
In other words: condom companies who give away their product for free do not use marketers because the demand for their product might actually increase. no kidding.
she makes it seem like the not wearing of condoms is the only reason to the DRC's prevailing HIV rates. What about the rebel rapes that have been going on for the last 2 decades?! She has NO CLUE. smh
Show me some statistics where Condom proliferation has decreased, or at least leveled-off the spread of STDs. The problem with that type of marketing, is that it makes them think of sex, without having to buy the condom. We are also making the assumption that these people have a conscience about transmitting sexual disease. The guy running the hotel clearly doesn't.
This was a horrible talk. She doesn't even consider that there may be other possible reasons that people in DRC aren't using condoms and offers no evidence/statistics to back up her argument that its all about marketing.
@masanachvideva I don't think she ever actually said it was all about marketing, but seeing as she IS a "reformed marketer", it makes sense that she's looking at the marketing side of the problem.
Yours is a horrible comment. You didn't even consider that the speech may not require further extrapolation and/or evidence in order to be useful. She may not have identified a silver bullet solution, but since there isn't any, I don't really care. What she did do was point to an important factor, thus her talk was indeed very useful and good.
@masanachvideva Yeah well why don't you do something better? It doesn't really matter why they don't you them, what matters is that they must use them.
@masanachvideva I agree, but I love the jab at aid groups and how they're really marketing at their donors rather than the people they are supposed to help. In terms of a TED talk, not so good.
Seriously though, this TED Talk was lame. It was all about how to get Africans to put a thin layer of latex on their penises by putting sexy woman on the wrapper. Those that are dumb enough to have sex with multiple people on a regular basis in an AIDS infested area, without wearing a condom, fully deserve the consequence(s). It sounds cold, but this is natural selection plucking out the stupid people from the gene pool...let it do its work.
@jpayne68177 Well your cunning plan seems to need some work, because AIDS is spreading and so are stupid people. Somehow I don't think just letting it be is going to help much.
For some reason, I thought the title said "Selling condos in Chicago". Then when I started watching more, I re-read the title and was like: ooooooooohhh lol

Catholics are against contraception because it prevents the birth of babies, which is a bad thing for them, because fewer babies = fewer choir boys to have sex with.
@MinotawrTV In my country Catholics promoted getting a lot of children so they would get more voters for the Catholic party and they actually succeeded. So yeah another evil conspiracy.
@MinotawrTV Of course but it's unsual for people to comment on TED videos, about let's say cancer, something like " Man, muffins are fucking delicious" which they are, just because cancer sits in the same contextual world as cancer.
@MinotawrTV Of course but it's unsual for people to comment on TED videos, about let's say cancer, something like " Man, muffins are fucking delicious" which they are, just because cancer sits in the same contextual world as cancer.
@chrisdrakekaka Cancer sits in the same contextual world as cancer? If you meant muffins, then no, there's no contextual relationship between muffins, as far as I'm aware. Where as the relationship between catholics and condoms is well established.
@MinotawrTV I'm a militant atheist but I must say, that is one ridiculous statement. What happened is that the church created the perfect conditions for pedophiles to prosper in, but refused to admit it (for obv reasons, which actually made it worse because that's part of the perfect conditions). I know it's a joke, but in my honest opinion you are just being offensive to be offensive. You have your right to free speech, but with this comment I'd like to use mine to *ask* you to use it wisely.
@MinotawrTV What discussion ? I asked you to question your use of free speech. That is all, there is no discussion here. Either you do or you don't, It's all up to you.
@MinotawrTV Because obviously you can't find something both funny and offensive. Not only that, but anyone who dares to not laugh at your jokes, must be humorless. Wow, you're such a pro.
@ForYeensSake It has nothing to do with finding jokes funny. A sense of humour is the mental radar with which we determine what is and is not meant in jest + how we respond to provocative humour without overreacting. Thus, the sophistication of your sense of humour is suspect. Why? Because upon identifying my comment as being a joke, you then proceeded to launch into a display of moral highground posturing and free speech rhetoric. Whether you laughed or not, you are most certainly 'humourless'.
@MinotawrTV TBH, the reason I commented wasn't even the fact that it was offensive or wrong. It was more the fact that the lol christian are pedo's jokes are getting quite old, and It's starting to annoy me that on most video's I watch there is either a JB comment or a lolchristians comment. Sorry if this bothered you, Rereading my first comment I didn't choose my words wisely (was/am tired so cut me some slack). Anyway, have a nice day.
-You really really think people there don't use condoms because of the little drawings on the back when the TOTAL number of condom users in Congo is less then 1.5% ?
-The real reason is pope Benedict XVI and his retarded edicts about the evil of condoms.
-Algeria is the biggest country in Africa you illiterate joke of a speaker.
- While Algeria is indeed slightly better. Congo still is one of Africa's biggest countries. It's population is also almost twice as big.
- Not knowing the above is not called illiteracy. Nor does it mean she's a joke of a speaker.
- Unless you can base your opinion on several peer reviewed studies I see no reason why you should be this disrespectful. She's only trying to share her opinion, one based on personal experience.
The point is that simple aid (charity) does not work long term. Development of businesses works. Businesses employ people and pay taxes. Those taxes are used for education and healthcare. Charities in partnership with local businesses maybe better than simply doling out free stuff.
@meotaku2 Yes, but nobody with HIV or malaria is going to start their own business. medical aid often has to come first. In retardedly simple terms, Improved health -> better labor force -> development of business -> etc.
@meotaku2 This is true, but it's also simple economics that the burden of a sick population won't allow for the development of a country's economy. Sick people can't work, and healthy people end up shouldering too much of the burden which leads to stifling consumption and infrastructural funding. A 1.3% population infection rate in ONE highly infectious disease is astronomical. I don't think America could even shoulder that burden.
The point is that simple aid (charity) does not work long term. Development of businesses works. Businesses employ people and pay taxes. Those taxes are used for education and healthcare. Charities in partnership with local businesses maybe better than simply doling out free stuff.
I am sorry, but did you say that the DR Congo is the largest country in Africa? It's either my ears are deceiving me, or you don't know the basic facts about that country.
Last October, The Sudan was "the largest country in Africa." Although South Sudan gained independence from Sudan last July and the country lost it's title, DRC was still not the largest country in it's continent. The title is now held by Algeria.
I welcome you to give this speech again when Algeria split into two.
@austinguy23 Africa is our origin. You do not leave your grandmother to die do you? And honestly, would YOU stop fucking? In a place so ravaged of any hope, you want to take away SEX from them? Come on. Chill out, donate a couple of bucks to a charity, and stop acting like you're the damn reincarnation of Joseph Conrad.
What we need is to put pope Benedict XVI in jail. He is very much responsible for those deaths in Africa. The nerve to go to an AIDS infected continent to tell people that condoms are a sin... it fucking gets me FURIOUS!!
give Africans HIV/AIDS, blame the f@ckin monkeys, then sell Africans condoms "at little or to no cost". im with a300pilotster.........................GO F@CKyazzelf and your investment FIRM BITCH!!!!
@celticphrog so they should be like colonizing the moon now? What caused them to stop "advancing" for thousands of years and don't say slavery because that only happened in period of time they started advancing again.
The reasons range from the degradation of land to the break up of African nations to imperialism to a deliberate and continuing policy of keeping Africa poor so the rest of the world can use its resources.

why are we helping africa, England gave them civilisation language culture and inventions yet they still remain backward, this is due to evolution we can not help other people it is like taking a gorilla and trying to make it a human lets not waste time
@Zaunstar all the leading hiv researchers interviewed in new AIDS documentary House of Numbers - Federal Court subpoenas being sent out to the top hiv virologists to appear and testify in court - there is no snake oil to be sold at hivquestions - only lawsuits with settlements going out to the victims - and getting people out of prison - peace
@Zaunstar - the video featured is of the discoverer of HIV - he was awarded the Nobel prize for that - there is a lot of information so please watch the videos two or three times to really understand what is being said - thats what i had to do

ForYeensSake 5 months ago
@ForYeensSake "I know it's a joke"
Good, end of discussion.
MinotawrTV 5 months ago
@MinotawrTV What discussion ? I asked you to question your use of free speech. That is all, there is no discussion here. Either you do or you don't, It's all up to you.
ForYeensSake 5 months ago
@ForYeensSake The only thing I'm questioning at the moment is the existence of your sense of humour.
MinotawrTV 5 months ago
@MinotawrTV Because obviously you can't find something both funny and offensive. Not only that, but anyone who dares to not laugh at your jokes, must be humorless. Wow, you're such a pro.
ForYeensSake 5 months ago
@ForYeensSake It has nothing to do with finding jokes funny. A sense of humour is the mental radar with which we determine what is and is not meant in jest + how we respond to provocative humour without overreacting. Thus, the sophistication of your sense of humour is suspect. Why? Because upon identifying my comment as being a joke, you then proceeded to launch into a display of moral highground posturing and free speech rhetoric. Whether you laughed or not, you are most certainly 'humourless'.
MinotawrTV 5 months ago
@MinotawrTV So because I think that humor doesn't give you a free ticket to offend I'm humorless ? Mkay.
ForYeensSake 5 months ago
@MinotawrTV I find it quite ironic that when you say end of discussion we start to discuss xp (besides the point, but still.)
ForYeensSake 5 months ago
@ForYeensSake This is a separate discussion.
MinotawrTV 5 months ago

-TED get better speakers.
popescualexandrucris 5 months ago
@popescualexandrucris
- Marketing DOES matter. A LOT.

Charities in partnership with local businesses maybe better than simply doling out free stuff.
meotaku2 5 months ago
@meotaku2 Yes, but nobody with HIV or malaria is going to start their own business. medical aid often has to come first. In retardedly simple terms, Improved health -> better labor force -> development of business -> etc.
syntheticsteve 5 months ago
@meotaku2 This is true, but it's also simple economics that the burden of a sick population won't allow for the development of a country's economy. Sick people can't work, and healthy people end up shouldering too much of the burden which leads to stifling consumption and infrastructural funding. A 1.3% population infection rate in ONE highly infectious disease is astronomical. I don't think America could even shoulder that burden.

Why should we pay for condoms for these savages? If these animals can't afford to procreate and don't want to get sick, STOP FUCKING!
Africa is a lost cause. We should just let Darwinism do its work.
