Sarah and Ella are amazing in their own respects. Ella was a big band singer, but could she survive in a quartet and master it as well as Sarah? The amazing thing about Sarah was that she was so multi-faceted, and that voice... even towards the end of her career, I still get shivers. I've never heard a voice like this in my lifetime (only 18 years), but nonetheless she is incredible.
@NickGodzakSinger Upon further investigation, I saw that Ella has sung in quartets. However, she doesn't appear as comfortable in that setting (in my opinion). Sarah totally meshes with her group, but Ella is most definitely comfortable in front of a big band. Both artists are incredible. Especially compared to the drivel that has been pushed to the masses in the 21st Century... so disappointed in my generation - do we have singers like this?
Sarah Vaughan is the greatest singer EVER!!! The dexterity of her voice is crazy!!! No one will ever match her. Her vibrato alone is in a class by itself
, no one has vibrato like her shes the greatest!!!
I saw her at a club in NYC in 83 or 84. She was amazing. You can't compare her with Ella, whom I also love. Their styles are so different. But, there is a reason why Ella was the First Lady of Song. That doesn't take away from Sarah's artistry or greatness in any way.
I was 18 when I first heard Sarah sing, I instantly fell in love with her voice. She has been the one constant in my life. Even though she passed away in April 1990, I still love her and miss her. Thankfully she left behind a huge catalogue, but she still had a lot of singing left in her. She had a beautiful voice all the way to the end. Thank you all you wonderful fans who post her work online. You keep her alive for all of us who grew up with her and introduce her to a new generation.
Sarah is talented but too many extra frills and trills to be called the greatest singer of the 20th century...that honor of course went to donny hathaway

She's not as great as Ella, I know, but I can't help myself from loving her like this.

I think that it is a matter of personal preference. How could anyone possibly say that one is greater than the other? They were both exceptional.

This is the great Sarah as I saw and remember her.
She remains the greatest singer of the 20th century.
