Taliban had control of the country, and when we took Taliban out of power it belonged to us, and we gave it back to Afghans to start a real government so it wont go back into the hands of the Taliban, now were there keeping the peace helping Afghanistan with its government and making sure Taliban doesn't regain the country.

There are certainly ways to "win" in Afghanistan, there are just no morally acceptable ways to win in Afghanistan. Yes I know, most people don't consider the US presence there as it is morally acceptable, but it could really be far worse. The resistance fighters in Afghanistan could be neutralized in a matter of days with the use of neutron bombs, but such an attack would be so horrific even the most pro-war US leaders won't use it.

Also, radiation effects dissipates after a few weeks so people can move back in. It was designed against Soviet armor assaults in Europe. Even Hiroshima and Nagasaki are vibrant cities today. The war can not be won; even American military officials and experts admit that the war can not be won. Afghanistan has been notoriously impossible to conquer over the years.

I see your point, and it´s a good one. However, the Russian army of the 70´s and 80´s cannot compare to today´s U.S. army, from a technological viewpoint. If the American army was unleashed fully, with no restraints, including funds, they could, in my opinion, break the nasty trend of partisan warfare´s edge over conventional warfare. Namely, because the core element of partisan warfare is hit-run-hide tactics, but with today´s technology, we can eliminate the 'hide' part.

We already won the war in Afghanistan. Taliban had control of the country, and when we took Taliban out of power it belonged to us, and we gave it back to Afghans to start a real government so it wont go back into the hands of the Taliban, now were there keeping the peace helping Afghanistan with its government and making sure Taliban doesn't regain the country.

There are certainly ways to "win" in Afghanistan, there are just no morally acceptable ways to win in Afghanistan. Yes I know, most people don't consider the US presence there as it is morally acceptable, but it could really be far worse. The resistance fighters in Afghanistan could be neutralized in a matter of days with the use of neutron bombs, but such an attack would be so horrific even the most pro-war US leaders won't use it.

Also, radiation effects dissipates after a few weeks so people can move back in. It was designed against Soviet armor assaults in Europe. Even Hiroshima and Nagasaki are vibrant cities today. You cannot talk about concepts that have never been proven or done before. You cannot reinvent war strategies that haven't been tried in the past. That's why you are still at war.

I was referring to multiple MIRVs worth of neutron bombs with some standard nukes thrown in for good measure, enough to blanket the area with fallout, enough fallout that those in caves run out of supplies and are forced to either attempt to risk radiation poisoning and flee or starve to death. Once again, this is so horrific a strategy we will never use it, I am merely arguing it is possible.

The only reason we are there is to keep our thumb on the natural gas supplies coming out of Turkmenistan. @wiganerrmc At the end of the day the Taliban still control the vast percentage of Afghanistan, the Pashtun Tribal areas on the border with Pakistan are swarming with the upper echelons of the Taliban command structure. The war can not be won; even American military officials and experts admit that the war can not be won. Afghanistan has been notoriously impossible to conquer over the years.

I see your point, and it´s a good one. However, the Russian army of the 70´s and 80´s cannot compare to today´s U.S. army, from a technological viewpoint. If the American army was unleashed fully, with no restraints, including funds, they could, in my opinion, break the nasty trend of partisan warfare´s edge over conventional warfare. Namely, because the core element of partisan warfare is hit-run-hide tactics, but with today´s technology, we can eliminate the 'hide' part.

If they destabilize Pak, this means more Al-quaida and destabilized Afghanistan and vice versa, but I think that it is not concern of the global elites!! Israel would keep on pushing US to disarm or at least destabilize Pak!! If they end war in Afghanistan, where would the war profiteers go!! Karzi was consultant to the US oil giant UNOCAL and tried unsuccessfully to negotiate a pipeline deal with the Taliban before the US invaded and maneouvred him into power and established a pro-US puppet government. Complex, as you say. There's also the 'newly discovered' mineral wealth. Israeli insterests too.

I heard around 8900 US soldiers have died in Afg. I don't think US in any position to dictate any terms. If they want a dignified withdrawl from Afgh, they should leave afgh. in the darkest of night and forget about it that there ever exist a country called Afgh. US main target was to break muslim coutries into smaller pieces which they have failed misreably. I think Pak and AFg should join together as a single country and rise as a power in the world : )
