It's like golf. Fans, semi-pro and professional players will APPRECIATE what they observe in a game because they understand how the game works on a much deeper level than a casual person. The average guy sitting in a bar will probably bitch and complain about how boring golf is and how it takes too long sometimes for a guy to even take a swing, how most of the time none of the shots even land anywhere near the hole. However, point is, you play to win, and a lot of the time it won't look pretty.
People who complain all the fireball "spamming" don't really understand how the game works. Each character has his own useful abilities and attacks and so be it, Guide and Ryu have very good projectiles. But damn it, can't you see they're not just throwing them out RANDOMLY and mashing fireball motions? There is a lot of mindgames and risks involve (should I throw a slow fireball or a fast one? how should I distance myself so I don't get jumped in?).
How is this getting thumbs down? Christpunchers is absolutely right. Do you see how Guile stops Ryu's hadoken with sonic boom and then punishes with a backfist? And Ryu's goal throughout the fight is often his corner fireball trap, which is one of his strengths. Simply trapping the opponent in the corner isn't the ideal strategy for the win, but if you mix your fireballs properly and properly space yourself you can punish them when they fail to escape. He's not the only one with tricks like that
When it comes down to it a game is there for having fun. Winning is fun, but if you sell your sole to winning and forget to appreciate the variation and capabilities which make this game so great in the first place, then they no longer carry ass much value to me. It's like using T Hawk. You have to work seriously hard for the same result and it's a real waste of time and effort considering you can easily win with others- HOWEVER, it is fucking rewarding and great fun, as well as being satisfying
If ALL you are concerned with is winning, ok, but I like to enjoy the nature of a generally improvised style which doesn't rely so intensivly on only the best possible move for the job, especially when that move is so consistently the same one.
I love to win, but I hate to bore others as well as myself. I'd rather die trying to beast someone when it's not entirely appropriate than win this way. Likewise I enjoy using unusual characters, for example Rose, Dan and Mika are my Alpha 3 chars.
Too many nubs making comments and not knowing anything. Either fight the best way you can or die. Being fancy to make a match look "nice" will end you faster.
And yes putting your head on the line trying to go all out offensive is always going to make you more likely to lose. But so what? I play almost 100% offensively with Boxer regardless of if I'm playing someone like Zangief (against whom with Balrog it's practically suicide unless you're as good as Daigo). The point is I want to kick some ass and simply winning and kicking ass are not the same. I'd rather lose and fight nicely than win and just be functional, it's very tedious.
Geez, you guys sound like lady friend. If the move works then use it dammit. It's stupid just to stop using an effective move (cuz it's cheap) and just jump in trying to do something else if it's just gonna get your ass kicked. And the hadoken is not cheap. It has more lag time then the Sonic Boom and when it's dodged can leave Ryu wide open for an attack. Hado is useful for safe long-range attacks, and there's no reason not to use it.
It's not the point as to whether or not the Hadoken is perfect. Rather it's extremely boring to watch any character do any move (especially the most predictable and successful one) over and over again. I know nobody wants to lose, but why bother winning in a way which is boring? It's not fun- which is the point of playing in the first place. Although I did think this fight was quite good, so many fireballs is always going to be quite tedious.
They weren't playing to please you. They were playing to advance in a tournament. If you don't find the pressure in a battle between two good players to be exciting enough, then why bother to comment? Should a boxer in a ring jump around like Bruce Lee and start doing spinning kicks just because it's boring watching two guys covering their faces with their fists all round?
@ the end of second round where guile's life bar was very close to its end, the ryu player should've fired a slow and then fast fireball.. would've probably ended the match..
