Ok.. so I am trying to practice triplets using the top of the tipper... not too successfully, I might add. lol. (time cures all) As I'm watching you play, I notice that you hold your fingertips so close to the end of the tipper, it looks as though all of your quick triplets are done with only the quickness of the bottom end of the tipper. Is this true? Or is your hand just too quick for my eyes? :-) Thanks.
Nice solo. I've got question. Your bodhran have very high pitched sound. I got brand new bodhran done by Seamus O'Kane with new tuneable system, and even when I tune it more up, it doesn't have so high pitch, only low sound go up. Do I need to much more re-play (i don't know english equivalent of this word) this bodhran to have so high pitched sound?
O'kane's Bodhran is my first, and I don't have any comparison with other bodhran's. With every day I like much more to play on it :) Like Abe wrote before, bodhran have high pitch (a little lower high pitch like in this video), and still have lovley bassy sound.
About the word I named "replay". I'm asking, is higher pitch will go much more higher after more time playing on bodhran - replaying the bodhran :)
Hi I want to thank everyone for your kind comments.
Regarding the question about the tuning. I feel that the high pitch comes from the playing, from pressing the skin with the backhand.
I play the bodhran tuned very low to get a wide range of sounds, as low as I can tune it without it sounding flat like hitting paper. I think that if you tune it too high you miss the beauty of it's bassy nature.
About the "replay", I think the skin of a bodhran defenetely gets better as it ages, but I don't feel that it's a drastic change, to help this, about once every six months i massage the skin with Almond oil, this works for me. Seamus makes wonderful drums, I defenetely reccomend them. Thank you
I don't know a lot about the Bodhran, but as no-one else has answered, I wonder if you are aware that the skin is being tensioned by pressure from the left hand.
If the skin really is too loose, you might ask Seamus to remedy this, possibly with a spacer hoop.
Carefully warming the skin also helps, and a dessicant pouch in the carry bag might keep moisture down.
Brand new bodhran's need the skin to be "broken into" O'kane bodhrans are great drums and I know a person who has one I have a Eoin Belgarth which plays well but Conor's (O'kane bodhran owner) always gets better pitches and timbres.
what are the dimensions of this bodhran? I'm thinking of getting a new bodhran. i think i want a 15, but don't know if I should go for a 14 oR 16? any advice?
It's a14 by 5, like a typical Snare drum. I feel that smaller bodhrans 14,15, 16 are easier to control, get nicer high pitched sounds and can still have a good bassy sound. I use Seamus O'Kane on this concert, I also have two bodhrans from Bill Wright, they are also wonderful, there is a new guy that makes great bodhrans, Christian something is his name, look for him too.
not a massive difference between them, don't be afraid of getting the small one, I would go for that one, paying for more wood and skin doesn't mean that it will be better. I would even dare to say that 14 is the modern standard size for professional bodhrans. Enjoy!!!

I didn't realize a bodhran was so diverse. I'd like to hear it mixed into some good seventies rock.

a lot of the pitch variation is done by putting your left hand inside the drum against the skin lightly while playing it.
