  • man o man is he superbly skillfull, with the double rolls and the extra dramatics around the kit

  • I just discovered Keith while watching him play live with Steely Dan in NYC. I'm watching this guy with a style all his own, killer left hand with traditional grip, and above average hand speed/chops. I was blown away. I know most of the real good drummers and here is this great drummer I've never heard of. A lot of Gadd influence going on with Keith. What else can I say. He's a joy to listen too!!

  • People keep mentioning his "Awkward" movements, but thats just him finding the ideas, there's no cliché in his playing, most drum solos on youtube are moronic stick flailing and totally uncreative. keith is trying to "say" something through his playing ! thats why he looks that way because he's communicating ! anyone who's trying to say something looks animated, he just happens to be using a drum kit

  • @clevermedia I gree. Keith is maintaining original tempo throughout this solo, except at the end when bringing it to a climax. I enjoy how he's so tonal during his solos.

    Keith! Mo-FREEKIN-Fo.

  • @clevermedia Your are so right. I meant no negative in my comment. I just absurdly expect someone who is so fucking good to look like James Bond. HA!!

But man he brings it to another level. Really clearly one of the best drummers walking the earth right now. Love this dude!

  • Such a unique style and that's what makes him such a joy to listen to. He loves those flams, who uses flams like him. Love the double ride cymbals and Keith's explosive runs show serious chops. Has Steely Dan ever hired a less than superb drummer.

  • man, white people REALLY love the dan. haha

  • he i SO amazing yet so awkward with his physical movements. he looks pretty tense but is so clearly in control. deft touch.

  • So painful to watch...so glorius to listen too. I fuckin' love this guys grooves.

  • Slammin...!!!! Musical ....YES....!!!!

  • nobody can play like this guy... I am not saying he is better or worse than anybody, just that nobody can play like him

  • @SuperAnimalDrummer Best compliment a player can have :)

  • @SuperAnimalDrummer He definitely deserves it, because being unique in a day and age where there are so many great drummers is truly an accomplishment. His sound and style are unbelievably original and refreshing. Even the way he holds his sticks, the way he tunes his bass drum... it's so different from any other drummer out there. I've never heard anything like it.

  • Super feel.

  • Impeccable - (love the accidental guitar chord at 1:43 )

  • There is a plethora of Keith Carlock DVD clips on youtube, as well as that of so many other talented drummers. This is a wonderland of learning if you want it.

  • hes channeling brian blade

  • I have to say, this guy really has his own style. And I know that's cliche, how a fan of a particular drummer will always say something like that, but I only just found this guy and say he's got his own style because I've been checking out a range of drummers, and all of them skilled but reasonably the same sort of style and sound. This guy, may not be as technical, but is definitely original.

  • Hey Folks. . You can see and hear Keith in action on the new RUDDER live DVD. over 2 hours of footage, and a big keith drum solo. Four Camera shoot, mixed by nic hard. nineteeneight (dot) com

  • HOW COULD ANYONE NOT LIKE THIS!!?!!

That should be a sin lol

  • Holy sh*t this is good!

  • Sick SOLO! My hero.

  • inappropriate and fragmented-------dis drum barf almost made be blow cookies

  • Now that is interesting. So different than Dennis Chambers. I must admit I do not like his Aja interpretation at all, but this Josie solo is quite good. He looks awkward as hell, but clearly has mastered the drums. if he can hang w/ Tal Wilkenfeld and Steely Dan he has gotta be good. better to listen to than watch.

  • I know him.

  • Ceith Carlock puts the Pow in my Kung Pow.

Ceith puts the Wow in my Pow Wow.

  • If I could play like any drumming, It'd probably be Keith Carlock. Not rigid to that idea, but I just love his playing so freakin' much.

  • AHHHH THE GHOST NOTES!

  • this guys has got it goin ON xD

  • Hi evr1 im new to internet chatin,g but where am i supposed to.... THis mOVie is so fUnntey I Looooovve The Cat in the background dancing with the baby! :o:o: So CUTE XD ^^

  • he WILL have this recognition

  • it´s incredible on what he has become. After enjoying gods like vinnie, he starts to be one of the greatest and tastefull drummers of this era

  • Maybe when he gets the recognition he deserves, he'll have the man boobs removed.

  • ya but joey jordansin is still faster

  • @chrisgr00ver yeah but joey jordison is gay

  • @moreisless283

rofl, yea he is. keith rules

  • Great player. I enjoyed that.

It's funny, if you turn the sound off and watch. It looks like hes just some guy they pulled out of the audience and let him get up and play the drums.

  • as much as i appreciate and respect a good solid drum solo these days with double bass and super fast playing...damn keith is the MAN and its sooo nice seeing.hearing a drum solo like this!

  • OMG. Never even heard of Keith....he's a smokin hot drummer!

  • now, that's a drumsolo!

  • Man this has gotta be the best drum solo I've seen in awhile :)

  • You can see how much he means that last buzz phrase;

He's playing da da - da da - da da - da da da da - DA DA DA DA.

But he's thinking da da fucking da da fucking da da fucking da da da da FUCK-ING DA - DA - DA - DA!!!

Then he plays a fill and says; THERE YOU FUCKING GO! with those last cymbal hits.

  • the triplet accent on the kick at 1:45 is crazy

  • Went to high school with Keith and never heard him play. I missed out.

  • @soccer739 imagine if you'd seen him play, you might have avoided liking Evanescence.

  • Amazing !!!!!!!!

  • cool! realy cool!

  • keith carlock is a god, and dicks on these wannabe joey jordison clones

  • Comment removed

  • very very good drummer! groove feeling, friendly, mister carlock of didier d'agostino french drummer, and teacher on youtube, and myspace.

  • If I could just pull off that fill @ 1:40, I'd die a happy drummer!

  • I love the sense of achievement and satisfaction you see in his face after that last crash hit.

  • SUMMAbitch...! I wound up at the end of Carlock's solo with a Tourette Syndrome seizure

    F'in amazing

  • not only is Carlock a great drummer but, his hi hat has swagg too! 2:52

  • ridiculous!!!! a legend!

  • The guy from snl plays guitar in this band? Wow I thought he was a comedian. Or a polotitian

  • I saw SD at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2008 (I think) and Keith was amazing the entire concert...almost stole the show for the entire night, in my opinion

  • I saw SD at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2008 (I think) and Keith was amazing the entire concert...almost stole the show for the entire night, in my opinion

  • Awesome !!

I saw him do that 3 times in 2003

At one of the shows walter turned to him

And said " I couldn't do that in a million years"

  • @7sevo7 Funny. I think he says that at all the shows, and has four a couple of years.

  • is the backround singer in the middle the american idol judge?

  • no, it's Carolyn Leonhart I think (not sure about the spelling)

  • Geez louise she's gorgeous

    Keith is really good, too

  • He is so musical. This guy actually plays the drums, and tweaks everything to the limit. He makes so many sounds of his kit! Delicious playing!

  • Beautiful solo by Carlock, but what the hell happened with Walter at the end, mega out of tune licks!?

  • In tune, just way the fuck out.

  • man i love they way he hits those 16th notes on the snare with his left hand, all ducks are in a row.. i ought to practice such things haha

  • @pulsating123 lol its sounds soo goood....i've gotta lot of work to do :)

  • whos gives a shit what he's playing, he is very good - interesting styles...

  • Again, from his instructional DVD, it is a long roll followed by two on the kick followed immediately by two accented R L strokes either on the snare drum or on the rack toms. In other words, LL RR LL RR KK R L. You can make the LL RR part as long as you want before doing the KK R L part........

  • Keith carlock is an amazing drummer. Most underrated.

  • @DarkHalo08 - how is he underrated? hes known all over the world for ALL of his work, from Wayne Krantz to Sting and Steely Dan. hes not hyped, perhaps, but superrespected for his deep personal musicianship. hes an excellent teacher by the way!

  • Whenever I picture what's going with Keith Carlock this is what comes to mind:

A solid string of 16th notes in his mind that he can put anywhere on his body at any given time. His left is ridiculous and fills SO much space....and those rolls are LEGIT!

  • holy shit! this man is incredible!!!

  • Keith explains in detail, that lick about which your are talking (those fast rolling rolls between the snare and the toms). You should DEFINITELY get his DVD on Hudson Music. It is well worth the investment.

  • Absolutely brillant! But most of all musical!!! and what a great person to boot! God Bless You! Looks like he did already....and continued health and success to you brother!

  • How does he do those rolls from the snare to the toms? Does he do a bass double before he goes to the toms? I mean like what he does at 1:41. I tried to do it but it doesn't work for me, and I saw another guy do it but he's never on Youtube to answer.

  • its basically a continuation of the double stroke roll. He is playing rr ll rr ll rr ll on the snare and when he does the tom hits he replaces the first double with a kick drum so the lick looks like this written out

    KK RR LL

look at a few times with that in mind and it will make sense.

  • I thought it was 8-strokes like this;

    KK RL RR LL

Two kicks, two toms, then two doubles on the snare.

  • Yea thats a variation but the one that occurs at 1:41 that was being talked about is KK RR LL that one is just six now the time he does it around 1:53 and the 2 minute mark is what you described.

  • I disagree, yes it's a sextuplet roll, but he plays two kicks leading into it. So the kicks are on the last two sextuplet beats leading into the toms on the first two of the next beat. Either way it's Keith Carlock and it doesn't matter what he plays... it's how he plays it, would you agree with that?

  • i agree it is a sextuplet roll and thats how i described it. That aside i also agree that it "is" keith carlock and he can play what ever he wants i was just explaining that little fill to someone who posed the question of what it was.

  • It's KK RL RR LL, if you meant the one that ends the fill.

  • It's always kick kick right left and then some amount of doubles or sometimes a single stroke on left hand instead of a double stroke.

  • shit mah pants <3

  • Saw these guys a few weeks ago; awesome show! Carlock has to change up his solo; becoming a one trick pony. He's my favorite drummer!

  • i love he's left hand technique, the feeling he puts to the solo (offcourse), but he's too repetitive

  • I have to upgrade my computer to just to see his sticks... sweet, nice triple paradiddles.... very tasteful too... of course.... great work!!!

  • woooooow!! luv!! he's fabulous great great great!!!!!!!!!!

  • Some guyz just have it in SPADES, like tryin to run a 4 min. mile...Go figure!

  • awesome. just fucking awesome

  • Keith is an absolute freak! What an original he is.

  • most grooving drummer on the planet. i love this guy.

  • esta banda é demais ,esse batera é bom demais ,a bateria fala .

    hebert shred

  • There's fire in them thar drums!

  • Keith makes me want to get to my rehearsal space where I can play at any volume without fear of complaining neighbors, and just play different grooves around the set. I love his style.

  • My thoughts exactly.

  • keith carlock's styte is usually playing very drum and bass groves with his base drum while the left hand does alot of work. plus he always puts a rapid flam sometimes.. haha

  • Keith Carlock is definitely in the top10 of my favourite drummers.. what groove! amazing!

  • Keith is the best drummer out there for creating new ideas and being full of groove. I've met him a few times and was always appreciative of his considerate time and kindness. We can all learn from him... and NOT just drumming. A great guy!

  • i love his solo it's a continuous flow of groove..it's so musical!...im a Gadd & Porcaro & weckl fan but i dunno there's somthing bout keith (not mary)

  • I met Keith about 5 yrs ago when he was not as known. He played my kit for a gig with Noz in Ashland,OR at some small brew pub. I tried to get my friends to come see that gig. They did not. I did have a seat right next to him that night. My bass drum head was severely damaged. He was pure power in fluid motion. I only mention this becuase I was stupid. I charged him for the use of my set not thinking that I could have traded him for a drum lesson. I guess I learned a few good lessons that night.

  • good story...

  • Keith has taken drumming to a new place.... he's right at the front of it all... on the guitar front there's wayne krantz and bass players like Matt Garrison have really pushed their frontiers as well

  • best drummer on earth

  • after the Jojo Mayer...hehehe

  • This man is sheer groove, what a talent.

  • This white boy is as good as Dennis Chambers dang. He's got tons of pocket, even in his solo.

  • all his little accents on the snare and the rim.. really cool.. very inspiring too!

  • Carlock the best of the newer generation

  • SWEEEEEEEEET!!

  • Carlock......one of the best and such a young player. SD reqruits only the BEST of the BEST. Dennis Chambers, etc. Keith takes this to a new level with great chops and muscular drumming. Epic.

  • or buddy rich even

  • continuing on my previous thought ... if anything I think Keith Carlock is closer to a Steve Jordan / Keith Moon than anything Gadd

  • Well, we must accept that we differ on this. But I have to underline strongly, that I admire Carlock, very much. Afterall - anyone who has been considered good enough to play for Sting - well, that´s a fine club to join, and Carlock´s there.

  • He plays just like Gadd... That´s not bad at all - it´s just that Gadd´s already done it.

  • Back to the classroom kankeranker! Carlock's time feel is totally different to Gadds, aside from the chops style....

  • Anyways, it was Jim Keltner who played on Josie, not Gadd

  • Well, thanks for trying to educate me. I never meant that Gadd played on Josie - I simply hinted that overall you could say that Keith sound alot like Gadd- he plays the same ideas, in his own way of course. I don´t know if thats a bad thing at all, exept that it´s not original and personal, like Colaiuta or Weckl - who sets new standards of there own. And Carlocks timefeel ...??? Just don´t understand your point there- I am awhare that he ist not actually Gadd, but his own person..

  • I still don't hear much at all of Gadd to the extent that Carlock is unoriginal. In fact, I'd consider Carlock to be the most original player to emerge in the last 10 years. Timefeel is a subtle thing, Carlock and Gadd both have a huge pocket, but both very distinct.

  • dude , there was not one Gadd lick in that whole solo ...what in gods name are you talking about ... regarding your other comments about Keith`s originality and personality on the drums ... i could not disagree more ... Keith may not be the " man " ..or the flavor of the month ..like Dave and Steve were when they exploded on the scene but in my opinion I have never heard anyone play like Keith Carlock before ... his combination of groove , power , and wreckless abandon is totally unique

  • "sweetfly66"

You're right, there was not one Gadd

lick, there were seven. Keith Moon?

Come on man, you've got to be joking.

  • C'mon Keith bring this to the next level you can do it ...

  • the first 30 sec. of his solo is FIRE!!!!!!!!!! - the rest is awesome, i just especially like how he opens it up!!!

  • i love the his sound, style, approach. all groooove. by far my fav drummer over the last 10 years... but man keith, those A-CUPS are just flappin'. get some duct tape.

  • There's a double sticky tape that is specially made for flaapy thingie parts. It's not as cheap or easy to find as duct tape, but yeah, i prolly gree somewhat on the moobs.

ARRRRRRGGGGGHHhhhhh! CARLOCK IS A SUMMABITCH!! Keith Carlock is Tension And Release Personified. He is the God of Emotional Tension. Case closed.

  • As much as I love this guy, I can't help but notice that all of his solos sound the same; he reuses a LOT of his licks almost verbatim.

  • As much as I love him, I suppose I can't deny that maybe that is true to an extent..but I suppose I don't mind because he makes those licks SWING like a mofo! Whereas some other players might be further out int whay play 'on paper' but it seems cold to me. Keith has serious groove,

  • Yeah.

    Like a Mo-freekin-FO.

  • SEEEERIOUS groove

Astounding playing but yes repeats al lot

  • yeah I agree that his solo's sound much alike. But Carlock CAN do other stuff and is very versatile, he just has his own aproach to solo'ing.

  • so does Gadd, Weckl, Buddy Rich.....they have their own 'thing' and they develop that. I think it sets them apart from others. I also think there's something to be said for the long-term attention span (if you will) of finely tuning and slowly developing a personal vocabulary over time, and not just going "got that lick down....next/harder one?". my $.02....

  • Well put.

  • wow. thank god for ba drummers that don't double kick. i hate double kick pedals

  • Don't hate the pedals, hate the players.

  • DAAAAAAAAAAMNNNNNNNNNN!

  • 0:31 is cool

  • man, wow he grooves like hell...one of my new and few favorites besides Simon Phillips & Vinnie Colaiuta

  • And that's what that's all about....
