I just discovered Keith while watching him play live with Steely Dan in NYC. I'm watching this guy with a style all his own, killer left hand with traditional grip, and above average hand speed/chops. I was blown away. I know most of the real good drummers and here is this great drummer I've never heard of. A lot of Gadd influence going on with Keith. What else can I say. He's a joy to listen too!!
People keep mentioning his "Awkward" movements, but thats just him finding the ideas, there's no cliché in his playing, most drum solos on youtube are moronic stick flailing and totally uncreative. keith is trying to "say" something through his playing ! thats why he looks that way because he's communicating ! anyone who's trying to say something looks animated, he just happens to be using a drum kit
@clevermedia I gree. Keith is maintaining original tempo throughout this solo, except at the end when bringing it to a climax. I enjoy how he's so tonal during his solos.
Such a unique style and that's what makes him such a joy to listen to. He loves those flams, who uses flams like him. Love the double ride cymbals and Keith's explosive runs show serious chops. Has Steely Dan ever hired a less than superb drummer.
@SuperAnimalDrummer He definitely deserves it, because being unique in a day and age where there are so many great drummers is truly an accomplishment. His sound and style are unbelievably original and refreshing. Even the way he holds his sticks, the way he tunes his bass drum... it's so different from any other drummer out there. I've never heard anything like it.
There is a plethora of Keith Carlock DVD clips on youtube, as well as that of so many other talented drummers. This is a wonderland of learning if you want it.
I have to say, this guy really has his own style. And I know that's cliche, how a fan of a particular drummer will always say something like that, but I only just found this guy and say he's got his own style because I've been checking out a range of drummers, and all of them skilled but reasonably the same sort of style and sound. This guy, may not be as technical, but is definitely original.
Hey Folks. . You can see and hear Keith in action on the new RUDDER live DVD. over 2 hours of footage, and a big keith drum solo. Four Camera shoot, mixed by nic hard. nineteeneight (dot) com
Now that is interesting. So different than Dennis Chambers. I must admit I do not like his Aja interpretation at all, but this Josie solo is quite good. He looks awkward as hell, but clearly has mastered the drums. if he can hang w/ Tal Wilkenfeld and Steely Dan he has gotta be good. better to listen to than watch.

Again, from his instructional DVD, it is a long roll followed by two on the kick followed immediately by two accented R L strokes either on the snare drum or on the rack toms. In other words, LL RR LL RR KK R L. You can make the LL RR part as long as you want before doing the KK R L part........
@DarkHalo08 - how is he underrated? hes known all over the world for ALL of his work, from Wayne Krantz to Sting and Steely Dan. hes not hyped, perhaps, but superrespected for his deep personal musicianship. hes an excellent teacher by the way!
Whenever I picture what's going with Keith Carlock this is what comes to mind:
A solid string of 16th notes in his mind that he can put anywhere on his body at any given time. His left is ridiculous and fills SO much space....and those rolls are LEGIT!
Keith explains in detail, that lick about which your are talking (those fast rolling rolls between the snare and the toms). You should DEFINITELY get his DVD on Hudson Music. It is well worth the investment.
Absolutely brillant! But most of all musical!!! and what a great person to boot! God Bless You! Looks like he did already....and continued health and success to you brother!
How does he do those rolls from the snare to the toms? Does he do a bass double before he goes to the toms? I mean like what he does at 1:41. I tried to do it but it doesn't work for me, and I saw another guy do it but he's never on Youtube to answer.
its basically a continuation of the double stroke roll. He is playing rr ll rr ll rr ll on the snare and when he does the tom hits he replaces the first double with a kick drum so the lick looks like this written out
KK RR LL
look at a few times with that in mind and it will make sense.
Yea thats a variation but the one that occurs at 1:41 that was being talked about is KK RR LL that one is just six now the time he does it around 1:53 and the 2 minute mark is what you described.
I disagree, yes it's a sextuplet roll, but he plays two kicks leading into it. So the kicks are on the last two sextuplet beats leading into the toms on the first two of the next beat. Either way it's Keith Carlock and it doesn't matter what he plays... it's how he plays it, would you agree with that?
i agree it is a sextuplet roll and thats how i described it. That aside i also agree that it "is" keith carlock and he can play what ever he wants i was just explaining that little fill to someone who posed the question of what it was.
Keith makes me want to get to my rehearsal space where I can play at any volume without fear of complaining neighbors, and just play different grooves around the set. I love his style.
keith carlock's styte is usually playing very drum and bass groves with his base drum while the left hand does alot of work. plus he always puts a rapid flam sometimes.. haha
Keith is the best drummer out there for creating new ideas and being full of groove. I've met him a few times and was always appreciative of his considerate time and kindness. We can all learn from him... and NOT just drumming. A great guy!
i love his solo it's a continuous flow of groove..it's so musical!...im a Gadd & Porcaro & weckl fan but i dunno there's somthing bout keith (not mary)
I met Keith about 5 yrs ago when he was not as known. He played my kit for a gig with Noz in Ashland,OR at some small brew pub. I tried to get my friends to come see that gig. They did not. I did have a seat right next to him that night. My bass drum head was severely damaged. He was pure power in fluid motion. I only mention this becuase I was stupid. I charged him for the use of my set not thinking that I could have traded him for a drum lesson. I guess I learned a few good lessons that night.
Keith has taken drumming to a new place.... he's right at the front of it all... on the guitar front there's wayne krantz and bass players like Matt Garrison have really pushed their frontiers as well

Well, we must accept that we differ on this. But I have to underline strongly, that I admire Carlock, very much. Afterall - anyone who has been considered good enough to play for Sting - well, that´s a fine club to join, and Carlock´s there.
Well, thanks for trying to educate me. I never meant that Gadd played on Josie - I simply hinted that overall you could say that Keith sound alot like Gadd- he plays the same ideas, in his own way of course. I don´t know if thats a bad thing at all, exept that it´s not original and personal, like Colaiuta or Weckl - who sets new standards of there own. And Carlocks timefeel ...??? Just don´t understand your point there- I am awhare that he ist not actually Gadd, but his own person..
I still don't hear much at all of Gadd to the extent that Carlock is unoriginal. In fact, I'd consider Carlock to be the most original player to emerge in the last 10 years. Timefeel is a subtle thing, Carlock and Gadd both have a huge pocket, but both very distinct.
dude , there was not one Gadd lick in that whole solo ...what in gods name are you talking about ... regarding your other comments about Keith`s originality and personality on the drums ... i could not disagree more ... Keith may not be the " man " ..or the flavor of the month ..like Dave and Steve were when they exploded on the scene but in my opinion I have never heard anyone play like Keith Carlock before ... his combination of groove , power , and wreckless abandon is totally unique
i love the his sound, style, approach. all groooove. by far my fav drummer over the last 10 years... but man keith, those A-CUPS are just flappin'. get some duct tape.
There's a double sticky tape that is specially made for flaapy thingie parts. It's not as cheap or easy to find as duct tape, but yeah, i prolly gree somewhat on the moobs.
ARRRRRRGGGGGHHhhhhh! CARLOCK IS A SUMMABITCH!! Keith Carlock is Tension And Release Personified. He is the God of Emotional Tension. Case closed.
As much as I love him, I suppose I can't deny that maybe that is true to an extent..but I suppose I don't mind because he makes those licks SWING like a mofo! Whereas some other players might be further out int whay play 'on paper' but it seems cold to me. Keith has serious groove,
so does Gadd, Weckl, Buddy Rich.....they have their own 'thing' and they develop that. I think it sets them apart from others. I also think there's something to be said for the long-term attention span (if you will) of finely tuning and slowly developing a personal vocabulary over time, and not just going "got that lick down....next/harder one?". my $.02....
man o man is he superbly skillfull, with the double rolls and the extra dramatics around the kit

As much as I love this guy, I can't help but notice that all of his solos sound the same; he reuses a LOT of his licks almost verbatim.

As much as I love him, I suppose I can't deny that maybe that is true to an extent..but I suppose I don't mind because he makes those licks SWING like a mofo! Whereas some other players might be further out int whay play 'on paper' but it seems cold to me. Keith has serious groove,

Astounding playing but yes repeats al lot

yeah I agree that his solo's sound much alike. But Carlock CAN do other stuff and is very versatile, he just has his own aproach to solo'ing.

so does Gadd, Weckl, Buddy Rich.....they have their own 'thing' and they develop that. I think it sets them apart from others. I also think there's something to be said for the long-term attention span (if you will) of finely tuning and slowly developing a personal vocabulary over time, and not just going "got that lick down....next/harder one?". my $.02....
