Hey for those of you who sang in this particular recording, did you by any chance change up the words in the mens section or something? You kept singing worthy to be praised over and over and I remember something else in the text.
@kj33wr Yeah they did. It's "With undefiled lips ever more thy glory to be praised, art thou worthy to be praised ever more thy glory to be praised. Worthy art thou to be praised ever more. Art worthy to be praised ever more." Not sure why they would change the text...I really don't see any reason for it. I think it actually takes away from the power of the song. Also the dynamics and pacing is rather awkward in places.
JPSaxMan, the conductor's use of circles is an ingenius motor that creates momentum, airflow, and tremendous pacing. This sort of healthy singing at such huge dynamic contrasts in unheard of, especially in community choirs. His conducting is actually amazing in helping the choir to achieve its full potential in realizing the music towards his concept. His ichtus is in the circle. He is clear when he needs to be, etc. Actually, it is superb conducting. He is serving both art and singers' needs!
@creatsong This reply is quite delayed...sorry for that. I agree with your comments, though I would ask is the momentum, airflow, and tremendous pacing coming from his conducting gesture? Or is it coming with his obviously skilled craft at rehearsing a choir? I can tell he is phenomenal and excellent at being able to prepare a group well, and to be able to communicate his desire for the music. I am simply pointing out technical elements in his conducting. I suppose we could agree to disagree.
@JPSaxMan As one of the people on stage singing under his direction, I would argue that it is both. As one who studied choral conducting exclusively with Dr. Nelson, I would say that there is none more "technical" where the "technical elements" of choral conducting are concerned.
@BAdamT2002 Adam I suppose that this is where my background in instrumental conducting conflicts with that of choral conducting. Perhaps I am simply uneducated and trying to apply principles across the fields which don't or can't exist. For now I will have to stand corrected, and we shall agree to disagree. After all who am I to criticize a man who has spent countless hours not only earning his degrees but earning the endearment and respect of students and musicians alike?
I think the group sounds wonderful but the conductor in his conducting is rather annoying. He has no ictus or pattern...it's just circles, for the majority of the time. Obviously he must have great rehearsal technique and know his stuff...but as a conductor, he could use some work.
@JPSaxMan You can say the same of many famous orchestral conductors, (world wide.) Sometimes there is little or no discernible pattern and the downbeat is nebulous, even in simple meters. For any new musician working with them it would take some adjustment. For those who work with them all the time they understand it. In the end, it's the resulting sound that they draw from the group that matters. Because someone directs "by the book" doesn't make them a good director. With all due respect.
@merhlin I can agree with what you are saying (ie Bernstein). I also agree with what you said about conducting 'by the book' but there also has to be some element of technique involved in conducting. The gestures that this particular conductor did are fine but not as a continuous thing. Variety of gesture and use of some time keeping pattern is usually a good thing. For example, the mirror conducting as well as the flowing gesture used here is good...just not all the time. Nice talking with you.
hmm...this is our district audition peice for this next school year. this is a HUGELY majestic song, which would require alotta practice in order to make it through.
you guys are wonderful! i had the pleasure of working with dr. nelson last summer, and he is so incredible. this is a great performance led by a fantastic conductor. great job!

@JPSaxMan FYI: Dr. Nelson received The American Prize for Conducting earlier this year, so he must be doing something right...
