I always hated how programmers would focus on sounds and music, instead of one or the other. It just turned the games into a cacophony of unrecognizable sound.
Oh god, this is the reason why i didn't play castlevania till this year... as a kid this was my first castlevania game. and i was like 0_o "people think this is good?". Now I realize what a mistake I made as a young 5 year old.
You may need Adlib because that gives 16-bit music. It would sound better. You must have used PC speakers. In other words, you used the wrong sound file. Adlib would improve the music for this game.
Wow. Just wow. Whoever programmed the music (or lack thereof) was either drunk, high, or maybe he had a rolling pin and had it roll over the keys that made the music.
@Sarato I think he meant that the sound's off, but A: That's not the file's fault B: It's not the file ripper's fault and C: It's not your fault. You have to do some complicated thing with DOSBox, I personally have no idea how to fix it.
I played this once - okay to be honest I tried to play cause the Controls screwed up - this Port just SUCKS. Wait you cant even call this a Port this isnt even the Full Game jst a few Levels of it.
In terms of a downgrade NES to DOS port, this is INFINITELY better than the Mega Man ones. This is actually playable. I'd still rather play it on the NES way, way more than this, but honestly this is going pretty well. You even walk up the stairs faster than the NES game. That's actually an improvement. The game even seems easier at a few points.
Anyone complaining about the music must not remember PC speaker. This is what all PC speaker music sounded like...unless they used clever programming tricks to force the speaker to do digitized sound.
@e11aguru There are other clever tricks they could have used, like not interrupting the music with the same annoying beeps every time an item is spawned or collected. That's what makes the game a torture to listen to.
castlevania is great, but about this port, as AVGN said "if your ears could puke, they would"... probably the worst game music ever.
By the way, I don't think this is the worst port ever... gta 4 pc port is the absolute SHIT... horrible graphics, loads of bugs, long load times and models loaded like 2 seconds before you crash into them with the car
I see. Irony isn't really my cup of tea and it really is hard to know when people are ironic when there really exists people that upload comments like the one above and really mean it too.
I never knew there was a DOS version of this, and that music is really atrocious. Sounds like someone who is trying to guess the music on a Casio keyboard.
Also, this looks very much like an MSX game... and a very bad one just to add. Although, I personally think the DOS Megaman games are far worse.
Did this have a sound blaster? If it did, then why the heck use the PC speaker? the PC speaker was never intended to really play music, hence the reason why all PC speaker 'music' was an ear sore.
What were they thinking? Who could have not realized how horrible the music is? This is epic fail - a PC game that manages to be worse than the NES version.
What a piece of garbage. Was there even a point to putting in music? It sounds like you pick up noisy items so often there wasn't a need for music. One neat thing was watching Simon fly up the damn stairs. Even I can't run that fast up a flight of stairs.
Truly, truly horrifying. Reminds me of a really crappy port of Super Mario Brother I once saw.
But still, does this game have unlimited continues like the NES version? If so, then it's automatically better than the MSX or arcade ports. Those things make even the 3D Castlevanias look good.
There's no point in playing this port of the game, but let's be fair. Commander Keen was a technological break-through in it's time, and if you want a bad port, look at the PC Ghouls N' Ghosts. This port really wasn't that bad if you consider it in context, and doing BGM with the PC Speaker was damn near impossible so it's commendable they tried as that was one of the best parts of Castlevania.
How do you use this DOS thing? I'm having a hard time messing with emulator stuff. Can you post a vid of how to install DOS and play those old games with it?
It is best played on a DOS emulator. I myself use DosBox and would love to upload more from this game, but the recorder i use doesn't support Windows Vista yet and that's why level 3 isn't uploaded yet.
the colors looks much better then the nes version but there,re to manny changes in the steel great graphics.
the sounds however is a mess this game uses only 2 channels,so once you grab 1 item etc wich does have a note, the system has to switch the another note and temperatury stops the music and play the note of that item and once done then play on the music from the point were it stops.
Well, on first viewing, I thought it was pretty bad, but it seems to play both well and faithfully to the original. The sound is the only problem (though Vampire Killer is recreated very well).
Actually the graphics for it's time were not too bad. Allthough the NES seems to run it in higher res with perhaps more detail. Other then that? Yeah the PC-speaker sound effects were horrid. Would have been better if they dind't try to emulate the music on it.
I can in the absolute start of the game. "choose sound" it says, or something like that. Then you can choose between pc speaker and adlib card. It's like that in my version of the game anyway.
Literally, it was just unbearable watching the video! I feel sorry for you. I can only imagine what you've been through. If you ever decide to beat your kids because you played this game, while I do feel sympathy for your kids, I don't blame you.
I think the reason why the music is so bad is b/c back in the apple 2 early pc days. The music came from the internal speakers and I dont think those were capable of playing 2 sounds at once.
Oh, god no! I'd rather see a 4Kids version of Resident Evil 4 (which takes away all the fun) than seeing him on this poor excuse of a great game series (excluding "Simon's Quest). Seriously: although I think I could see the level 3 thing you mentioned for the heck of it; I've had worse; just a mind wound.
You'd expect it to be better on DOS... o.o
