  • LMAO @ the weak "comments" disrespecting Vladdie and the Red Wings! Haters gonna HATE and the Detroit Red Wings will ALWAYS be a better, classier NHL franchise than the Flyers.

  • Legion of doom my ass

  • "besides stevie y's double ot goal against the blues, this is the most memorable shift in Red Wings history for me."

  • If Konstantinov was still playing and he made that hit today the new NHL would've given him a 5 a game and possible suspension because he didn't have his head up. Imagine Kronwall being mentored by the Vladinator...lethal duo...the bash brothers.

  • Damn I miss the NHL on ESPN. And this Wings team.

  • Sometimes I can't help but wonder what might have been had Konstantinov never been in that accident.

  • @McSomething15 You ain't the only one. Fuck that drunk driver.

  • Vladdie go BOOM all over that Philly bitch, LOL!!!! Love ya always, Konstantinov :)

  • @UrlsGrrl54 hahaha karma fucked him up though you little bitch hahahahaha

  • Comment removed

  • The '96-97 wings, my favorite team of all time.

  • STEVIE Y and BRENDAN BEST DUO EVER!!!!!!!

  • fuck montreal this is a red wings clip, go post your stats on your own team's videos

  • did anyone notice Gary Thorne saying "Sextall"?

  • Not to be stereotypical, but why aren't there more Russian big hitters? Don't Russians typically have a lot of 'big men'? Like Olympic heavy lifters. Even in fiction like Zangief, those guys are Russians.

It's interesting that Russian hockey players tend to be smooth, skilled and agile.

  • I still get chills wathcing this.SHanahan is so pumped.LETS GO RED WINGS!!!!

  • Ahhh...90's NHL.

  • The 2008 team may have been better on paper, and the 2002 team may have been the best team in the history of the sport, but nothing beats the toughness and grit of the 1997 team.

    We will always beleive.

  • @BLGaughan 1978 habs were the best in history, 60 wins 15 ties and 8 loses. 8 LOSES!!!!! will never happen again

  • @rianpop less teams back then. fuck the habs lol. they won all their cups back when the league was smaller. they got all the good players nd just str8 dominated. it was a completely different league back then. y u even commenting on a red wings video? lol. nd the format is different now, more losses cause there r no ties now buddy

  • @rianpop oh btw 62 wins 13 losses n 7 ties.... wings still had more wins son

  • @jlow142795 we did have more wins than them, but they still won the cup that year Montreal but we did get it back to back after our 62 win season so no biggie

  • This is what hockey is all about. :D

  • Vlad was and always will be my favorite.

I cried when he had his accident. :'(

    Hockeytown misses you Vlad. <3

  • Gary Thorn and Bill Clement need to come back to hockey commentating. Doc Emerick is okay, but these guys are the MASTERS

  • terrible suicide pass.

  • that '97 detroit team has got to be one the best ever

  • Gary Thorne is such a Flyer hater its disgusting.

  • "The Joe is ROCKING as the WHEELS FALL OFF of the Failadelphia Flyers!"

  • YARD SALE!

  • Hockey used to be in cities that hockey can shirve. Not in Nashville!!

  • the good old days when the nhl was on espn and got coverage on sportscenter...

  • i think this game ended hawerchucks career too

  • 16 FTW!!!

Anyone ever notice how there hasn't been a sweep in the SC Finals since there were 4 straight between '95 - '98?

Also, 5 of the last 8 SC Finals have gone a full 7 games.

I'd like to think that this was solely a result of great competition, but I can't help but wonder these days whether the potential for more revenue for the League (not to mention the national television exposure that comes with a deciding game) plays any sort of role or not.

  • salary cap... thanks gary, ass.

  • @dburt0021 hawks just swept san jose baby!

  • @SeanTagen

In my world, the Hawks didn't play the Sharks in the Finals...

  • That wings team was godly in the mid 90's.

So many hall of famers on those teams.

  • amen, those were the fucking glory years

  • 01-02 you want to talk about hall of fame team lol, but yes the good old days of the Wings was awesome

  • And after the hit, the guy was trying to get into a fight with Konstantinov and failed.

He wasn't the greatest player, but during his later years did he certainly become glorious.

  • Vladdy does it again

  • lindros was the man i used to love the flyers

hockey used to be good not now it sux

  • Dramatic Lindros!

  • Hockey was so much better then

  • He worked for Gambino's Limo service ! One punkass muther fucker !

  • what a fuckin hit by konstantinov :) that bastard who drove the limo that fucked him was pulled over for another dui...prick needs to be shot!

  • Good call Scott. They should chain that limo driver to the back of a Zambonie, drag his ass around the rink, and let the wings, slice, hack, and beat that fucker... then tie his ass to the goal posts spread eagle and puck his ass to death. And since he is a drunk, the fans should be able to pelt him with broken beer bottles. If that doesn't take him out, then shoot him, hell shoot the corps for good measure.

  • @scottsway in the knee, otherwise he's getting off easy

  • Comment removed

  • @scottsway I think we should hang that drunk prick bastard in Hart Plaza. What do ya think?!?!?!

  • @nighthawkdave5150

    sounds good to me.

  • @scottsway Indeed, put an end to a great players career. Probably the greatest hitter in the NHL too....

  • a, hockey's glory days...

    the good ol 90's

  • @Customcoasters91 Best decade ever.

  • Go Wings. I know Ron Hextall and he was a good player, but he wasnt playing good in that series. GO WINGS!!

  • pretty sure wings forwards flyers defense pairings left hextall at a slight disadvantage

just giving credit where it's due

  • I've always loved Detroit! The Wings had Yzerman, my all-time favorite player, and Konstantinov, my all-time favorite bodychecker! It's a pity that Konstantinov only played for 6 seasons.

  • if you ever get hit in open ice and lose your stick, you pretty much got ass raped

  • ВЫЗДОРАВЛИВАЙ!

  • HAHAHAH at 0:29 Gary Thorne says "SEXTALL THE SAVE!!!"

  • ha its true! nice catch man!

  • VLADDIE! VLADDIE!

  • hes a beast

  • thus ended dale hawerchuk's career

  • he's lucky it didn't end his life. Good god what a hit.

  • HES A DEVIL!!!

  • crosby just pasted pubes on his face last year

  • hell yeah, crosby is over rated like a mother humper!

  • From the '95 East Finals to these Finals to 2000 ECF, it never gets old seein Fagdros on the verge of tears(if conscious)

  • Man I remember that goal so much! I was only 8 at the time too lol And such a sick hit!

  • haha i noticed somethin funny. all the talk this year watchin red wings playoff games was about how important the playoff beard is, and yet in 97 im pretty sure none of the russian 5 had one. good for them i love hockey but i think thats a stupid tradition, plus it makes some players look hideous (crosby) lol

  • if you want pretty boys, watch basketball. if you wanna watch a man's sport, watch hockey. Men grow beards, boys grow goatees.

  • ur comment is stupid. i love hockey, but the fact of the matter is some people look terrible with facial hair and shouldn't grow it out no matter what the circumstances are. how are basketball players pretty boys? most of them are black and have facial hair all year round. hockey players do it just for the playoffs. Here's an example: Zetterberg is fine with facial hair while someone like datsyuk shouldn't do it cuz it takes to long to fill in.

  • @ZetterbergandDatsyuk Agree, Basketbal is a sissy sport

  • gotta love the way Detroit not only beats, but dominates the everyliving poop out of the east in finals.

    not even close.

  • 1995 nuf said

  • New Jersey is a bit of an exceptional eastern team, knows how to win. other than new jersey, I can't think of a time the east beat the best out of the west, it is always crappy teams like edmonton, calgary, anaheim before all those kids got there.

    nuf said

  • for a medium-size player konstantinov is a beast

  • He could probably still kick your ass, pussy.

  • flyers are such idiots... busy chasing ONE man while the play is still on

  • yea it is dumb

  • That was Konstantinov's goal...piss off and distract the Flyers best...notice how he didn't go back at Hawerchuck who blatantly pulled him down...If he retaliated there would have been a penalty call and the Red Wings momentum would have been ruined...Great Player

  • 1997: Flyers got exposed by the wings

2008: Penguins got exposed by the wings

Detroit Red Wings: 8-2 @ the SCF against the two Penn teams.

  • This series was a total demolition. The Flyers were the bigger team and had the Legion of Doom, but the Wings had the experience and superior goaltending.

Didn't Terry Murray call the Flyers chokers after this game?

  • He said that his team was in a "choking situation", and he explained himself after being questioned stating that he meant it was like they were in a room with no air, literally almost about to choke to death (being down three games to none, almost no room to breathe).

  • Philly was favored to beat the Wings in the finals because Philly steamrolled through the Eastern Conference with ease. But once they met Detroit, all that shit went out the window. Detroit stopped everything that Philly had and exposed Hextall and the overrated Eastern Conference only Defense. The top line went MIA in the finals, Lindros had one point..a meaningless goal in game 4 with 8 seconds left in a Detroit win.

  • yeah no we pummeled pittsburgh adter they rolled through the eastern confrence

  • Hextall sucked. And this is coming from a Flyers fan.

  • I just have a feeling...that if Jones or Hatcher or Hartnell or Upshall or Carter lay a hit like that next week....they're gonna sit for five full minutes.

If Downie or Cote do it, hell, we won't see them til Thanksgiving.

  • I agree the refs and the league are in full favor of protecting Crosby...we'll see

  • I'm a Flyers fan and watching this sucks but the Flyers were highly overrated in '97. They had one good line and Hextall wasn't even that good. He was frustrating to watch, he would constantly leave the crease and allow dumb goals. Its a shame that Konstantinov got hurt though, that's just horrible he didn't deserve that, i don't think anyone does. I read somewhere the driver of the limo wasn't even drunk, is that true?

  • yeah, he had a suspended license too

  • I think the driver tested positive for some kind of drug. Either heroin or cocaine.

  • That whole fiasco is still going on now through the courts here in Detroit. The driver claims now that he fell asleep and didn't even see the tree he hit until it was too late.

  • Konstantinov had a rare mind. It's a shame he got hurt. He was just... always where he needed to be to make a guy look silly.

  • If Kronvall can stay healthy he is just like the Vladinator. But i do miss him.

  • kronwall is a great player, but he will NOT be another vladinator. That guy was just too intimidating!

  • Vlad had an element of cruelness that made him different than most defensemen today. I don't think he would have been able to play the same game in today's NHL but it would have been fun to see him try. The Wings were never able to replace him, he was a special player.

  • People usually confuse that "cruelness" with being a dirty player. If Konstantinov was a dirty player, there is no such thing as a physical defensemen in hockey.

  • Good point. Vlad played a mean, tough game that required him to be physical. Sometimes when I watch Franzen I wish he was born with that mean streak. He could be like Bobby Holik with a scoring touch.

  • Vlady's spirit lives on in Kronwall though...and players are beginning to learn to keep their head up when Kronwall is on the ice.

  • kronwall leaves his feet too much.

  • kronwall runs peoples show too much.

  • lol its oveis that Shanahan was looking for the goal i mean 80% of the players would do that if he past it to larionov the goalie would have time to get back up

  • Funny that Philly was actually favored in this series.

  • I know...it was because no team was able to shut down philly's top line of Renberg-Lindros-Leclair, in the Eastern Conference. Hextall and Snow were both mediocre during the playoffs. But the flyers were able to blitz through the east because of their legion of doom. But of course, the red wings had a nearly perfect team and had the players to shut down Lindros, and Leclair was constantly shoved off the puck, which never happened in the east. Detroit was just too much. Shanahan was a big factor.

  • The thing I remember most prior to the series was the concern of Philly's size being too much for the Wings to handle.

  • I remember watching the chmpionship video after they won the cup in 97, on the vieo a dude was like Detroit is not hockeytown this is hockeytown.

And what happened, the Wings smoked your ass.

Detroit is and will always be the only hockeytown

  • 00:48 - What's wrong, Eric? Daddy couldn't get the Cup for you? Should have emancipated yourself, you'd probably still be playing & have a Cup or two by now....

  • anytime i see clips from this series, i cant help but smile....that was a special year for all wings fans!

  • Ahaha Dale Hawerchuk. Go cry in corner.

  • You know, a rather ugly attitude there. Hawerchuk had a great career. Too bad it had to end on that note. Sadly, neither of them played again after those finals. Hawerchuk retired and Konstantinov was in that limousine accident.

  • It's not the hit that's funny. It's Dale's jawwing and futile shoving of Vlady afterwards.

As the announcer says, "As a result of the Flyers attempting to get back at [Vlady] they gave up a 3 on 2."

  • Maccarty for the Grind Line, Fedorov on 2nd line and the Cup is In Detroit.

  • No one calls the game batter than Gary Thorne! Vlady and Fish were awesome!

  • God I will never forget watching this series.

  • that detroit could be the best team of the nineties

  • could be?....was!

  • Flyers sucked in that series, they were an embarassement.

  • well yea...they choked. Plus, their top line couldnt do shit cause Federov and the Wings' defense shut the flyers offense down and outplayed them. The Red Wings wanted it more, and it was their time.

  • I don't like to cheer for teams full of Euros and russians. Flyers were a more physcial team but Terry Murray made some horrible moves that series.

  • and your pretty racist

  • Gary Thorne was the truth. I miss him announcing games on ESPN. His call for the Steve Yzerman 2OT goal against St. Louis is awesome.

  • go redwings!!!!!

  • i loved going to the joe in mid/late 90s... such a crazy crowd

  • Vladdy was as hard of a hitter as Federov was as fast a skater...and y'all can't forget the Knittin' Lady...anyone remember her? She was Vladdy's and Federov's equivalent in the knitting world

  • No one hits like Konstantinov did. He was just awesome.

  • hockey fell off the face of the planet after this.

  • first things first... to get back on the planet... get hockey on ESPN

  • flyers suck!!

  • hey! you suck!! lol

  • Brendan Shanahan off Ron Hextall!

    Love that

  • Vlad knocked that guys head through his ass

  • i think gary thorne said sexstall

  • the point is that Detroit is better than you and always will be. Go Wings!!!

  • Ron Hexall was horrid goalie!

  • He was not good in this series by any means, but it's not all his fault. The Flyers defense fell apart. Janne Niinimaa, who was playing Nicklas Lidstrom-like defense through the playoffs, collapsed with the rest of the Flyers.

  • Its really sad that this probably was Konstantinov's last hurrah playing hockey. If anyone recalls he was paralyzed when the red wings limosine crashed into a tree coming back back from a celebration after they won the cup. The limo driver was drunk, so hope he burns in hell

  • Konstantinov was one of my favorite Red Wings, along with Fedorov and Shanahan. They dedicated the 1998 playoff run to Vlad, and they won the Cup again.

  • yeah, its too bad that Vlad was in that wreck. he has one hell of a player and could check with the best of 'em. I remember watching this on TV and going "OHHHHHHH!!"

    Long Live Red Wings

  • this Wings team was one of the best of all time PERIOD.

  • I remember this. This is when I used to actually watch hockey.

  • The fact that the flyers made the finals with Ron Hextall and Garth Snow shows how weak the east was through the 90's.

  • That, combined with the Devils winning the Cup as the 5th seed and the Nordiques losing as the #1 seed. The East was weak, but they were very close.

  • And it still is.

  • you see the problem is that the West has a better distribution of good talent. The East has more superstars. The East is weak because of the southeast division. Ottawa, philadelphia (except last season), Jersey Devils, montreal, and Pittsburgh are all strong teams from the East as of now. But yea the west is a stronger conference right now.

  • Crawford1987: Couldn't agree more

We'll see the team who will finish 9th in the East having more points than the SE division champion.

  • They should have replayed the hit. I was surprised that Hextall lasted so long in the NHL.

  • Hextall was always on good teams. He was in the Finals as a rookie, on Quebec's 1993 team that recorded 104 points, on the Islanders team in 1994, and returned to the Flyers in late 1994 where they were contenders every year.

Hextall received credit in Quebec where it was the offense, led by Joe Sakic and also consisted of Mats Sundin, Steve Duschesne, Mike Ricci, and Owen Nolan that got the job done.

Philadelphia was led by their defense, so Hextall always had good players on his team.

  • And Quebec got straight out in the series against the 93's champions, Montreal... what a great memory it is so all my friend that was chearing for the nordiques and got owned by me with my canadiens..

  • i miss shanny

  • Hextall was absolutely horrible in this series. 16 goals in 4 games.

  • snow was in game 2 so hextall let in 12 goals

  • 12 goals in 3 games. Still pretty bad and still 4 goals on average. But in Hextall's defense, it is a bit unfair to place all the blame on him. The Flyers' defense collapsed.

  • biggest reason why the flyers lost this series was because of turnovers, at least 6 wing goals came off of the Flyers turnovers, but Hextall was pretty terrible

  • Great hockey moment. A glory time in the NHL this was. Now the NHL is filled with sissified young punks complaining about money.

  • what a great hit, i'll always remember how happy i was, watching in my living room. the flyers got owned, needless to say.

  • and then you heard it in FULL at the 38 Second mark of this video.

    *BRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG*

    *BRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGG*

    *BRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG*!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What Hiei2k7 said, exactly...

  • Can Someone say SUICIDE PASS?!?!?!

See children, Don't do that, unless the kid you're passing to has it coming to them.

It's as if you could hear the clackety-clack of the Siberian Express coming down the line......

  • You don't fuck with Vlad. I would have liked to see C. Lemieux do the turtle when Vlad was bitch slapping him.

  • He was a big ass fucking player. He'd knock the shit out of you.

  • He played big, but Vlad wasn't big at all. 5'10-11" and 185lb or so. He was essentially Yzerman's size.

  • Konstantinov was one of the best hitters i have ever seen. He was one of my favorite defenders

  • It was like that hit put the exclamation and puncutation mark on the entire series!

  • if we still had konstintinov we would have won in 1999 2000 2003 and 2006 and 2007 he was phenomanol he is my fav for life long life vlad!

  • I absolutely agree..

  • God damn sick hit mate, awesome, even if i don't like that much the Red wings this 97-98 squad was really afraid playing against them, what a definition by Shanahan, also one thing that i remember well is when the Avs and The wings killed each other every game.

  • Who got rocked by Vladdy?

Red Wings > Flyers in that final

  • I hate the wings, but that was one bad ass team. Long live the Vlad!

  • vladdy was always one of my favorites. fucking badass. i miss him so much.

  • With the russian line...sick team.

  • I remember watching this as it was just yesterday and the Flyers got killed. Ron Hextall couldn't stop a shot the flyers scored 6 goals in 4 games Eric Lindros only scored once in 4 games I guess the gas tank just

    ran empty.

  • It was right at that moment that Eric Lindros knew that the Flyers weren't gonna stage a miracle comeback, when his world got rocked and all 6'6" of that whiny baby jackhole was hanging upside down at THE JOE!!

Imagine Konstantinov, Probert, Kocur, McCarty, and Shanahan on the ice at the same time. Who's in Goal? Mike Vernon! haha, ask Patty Wah how he fights
