LMAO @ the weak "comments" disrespecting Vladdie and the Red Wings! Haters gonna HATE and the Detroit Red Wings will ALWAYS be a better, classier NHL franchise than the Flyers.
If Konstantinov was still playing and he made that hit today the new NHL would've given him a 5 a game and possible suspension because he didn't have his head up. Imagine Kronwall being mentored by the Vladinator...lethal duo...the bash brothers.
Not to be stereotypical, but why aren't there more Russian big hitters? Don't Russians typically have a lot of 'big men'? Like Olympic heavy lifters. Even in fiction like Zangief, those guys are Russians.

@jlow142795 we did have more wins than them, but they still won the cup that year Montreal but we did get it back to back after our 62 win season so no biggie
Anyone ever notice how there hasn't been a sweep in the SC Finals since there were 4 straight between '95 - '98?
Also, 5 of the last 8 SC Finals have gone a full 7 games.
I'd like to think that this was solely a result of great competition, but I can't help but wonder these days whether the potential for more revenue for the League (not to mention the national television exposure that comes with a deciding game) plays any sort of role or not.
Good call Scott. They should chain that limo driver to the back of a Zambonie, drag his ass around the rink, and let the wings, slice, hack, and beat that fucker... then tie his ass to the goal posts spread eagle and puck his ass to death. And since he is a drunk, the fans should be able to pelt him with broken beer bottles. If that doesn't take him out, then shoot him, hell shoot the corps for good measure.
I've always loved Detroit! The Wings had Yzerman, my all-time favorite player, and Konstantinov, my all-time favorite bodychecker! It's a pity that Konstantinov only played for 6 seasons.
haha i noticed somethin funny. all the talk this year watchin red wings playoff games was about how important the playoff beard is, and yet in 97 im pretty sure none of the russian 5 had one. good for them i love hockey but i think thats a stupid tradition, plus it makes some players look hideous (crosby) lol
ur comment is stupid. i love hockey, but the fact of the matter is some people look terrible with facial hair and shouldn't grow it out no matter what the circumstances are. how are basketball players pretty boys? most of them are black and have facial hair all year round. hockey players do it just for the playoffs. Here's an example: Zetterberg is fine with facial hair while someone like datsyuk shouldn't do it cuz it takes to long to fill in.
New Jersey is a bit of an exceptional eastern team, knows how to win. other than new jersey, I can't think of a time the east beat the best out of the west, it is always crappy teams like edmonton, calgary, anaheim before all those kids got there.
That was Konstantinov's goal...piss off and distract the Flyers best...notice how he didn't go back at Hawerchuck who blatantly pulled him down...If he retaliated there would have been a penalty call and the Red Wings momentum would have been ruined...Great Player
This series was a total demolition. The Flyers were the bigger team and had the Legion of Doom, but the Wings had the experience and superior goaltending.
Didn't Terry Murray call the Flyers chokers after this game?
He said that his team was in a "choking situation", and he explained himself after being questioned stating that he meant it was like they were in a room with no air, literally almost about to choke to death (being down three games to none, almost no room to breathe).
Philly was favored to beat the Wings in the finals because Philly steamrolled through the Eastern Conference with ease. But once they met Detroit, all that shit went out the window. Detroit stopped everything that Philly had and exposed Hextall and the overrated Eastern Conference only Defense. The top line went MIA in the finals, Lindros had one point..a meaningless goal in game 4 with 8 seconds left in a Detroit win.
I just have a feeling...that if Jones or Hatcher or Hartnell or Upshall or Carter lay a hit like that next week....they're gonna sit for five full minutes.
If Downie or Cote do it, hell, we won't see them til Thanksgiving.
I'm a Flyers fan and watching this sucks but the Flyers were highly overrated in '97. They had one good line and Hextall wasn't even that good. He was frustrating to watch, he would constantly leave the crease and allow dumb goals. Its a shame that Konstantinov got hurt though, that's just horrible he didn't deserve that, i don't think anyone does. I read somewhere the driver of the limo wasn't even drunk, is that true?
That whole fiasco is still going on now through the courts here in Detroit. The driver claims now that he fell asleep and didn't even see the tree he hit until it was too late.
Vlad had an element of cruelness that made him different than most defensemen today. I don't think he would have been able to play the same game in today's NHL but it would have been fun to see him try. The Wings were never able to replace him, he was a special player.
People usually confuse that "cruelness" with being a dirty player. If Konstantinov was a dirty player, there is no such thing as a physical defensemen in hockey.
Good point. Vlad played a mean, tough game that required him to be physical. Sometimes when I watch Franzen I wish he was born with that mean streak. He could be like Bobby Holik with a scoring touch.
lol its oveis that Shanahan was looking for the goal i mean 80% of the players would do that if he past it to larionov the goalie would have time to get back up
I know...it was because no team was able to shut down philly's top line of Renberg-Lindros-Leclair, in the Eastern Conference. Hextall and Snow were both mediocre during the playoffs. But the flyers were able to blitz through the east because of their legion of doom. But of course, the red wings had a nearly perfect team and had the players to shut down Lindros, and Leclair was constantly shoved off the puck, which never happened in the east. Detroit was just too much. Shanahan was a big factor.
00:48 - What's wrong, Eric? Daddy couldn't get the Cup for you? Should have emancipated yourself, you'd probably still be playing & have a Cup or two by now....
You know, a rather ugly attitude there. Hawerchuk had a great career. Too bad it had to end on that note. Sadly, neither of them played again after those finals. Hawerchuk retired and Konstantinov was in that limousine accident.
well yea...they choked. Plus, their top line couldnt do shit cause Federov and the Wings' defense shut the flyers offense down and outplayed them. The Red Wings wanted it more, and it was their time.
Vladdy was as hard of a hitter as Federov was as fast a skater...and y'all can't forget the Knittin' Lady...anyone remember her? She was Vladdy's and Federov's equivalent in the knitting world
He was not good in this series by any means, but it's not all his fault. The Flyers defense fell apart. Janne Niinimaa, who was playing Nicklas Lidstrom-like defense through the playoffs, collapsed with the rest of the Flyers.
Its really sad that this probably was Konstantinov's last hurrah playing hockey. If anyone recalls he was paralyzed when the red wings limosine crashed into a tree coming back back from a celebration after they won the cup. The limo driver was drunk, so hope he burns in hell
Konstantinov was one of my favorite Red Wings, along with Fedorov and Shanahan. They dedicated the 1998 playoff run to Vlad, and they won the Cup again.
yeah, its too bad that Vlad was in that wreck. he has one hell of a player and could check with the best of 'em. I remember watching this on TV and going "OHHHHHHH!!"
you see the problem is that the West has a better distribution of good talent. The East has more superstars. The East is weak because of the southeast division. Ottawa, philadelphia (except last season), Jersey Devils, montreal, and Pittsburgh are all strong teams from the East as of now. But yea the west is a stronger conference right now.
Hextall was always on good teams. He was in the Finals as a rookie, on Quebec's 1993 team that recorded 104 points, on the Islanders team in 1994, and returned to the Flyers in late 1994 where they were contenders every year.
Hextall received credit in Quebec where it was the offense, led by Joe Sakic and also consisted of Mats Sundin, Steve Duschesne, Mike Ricci, and Owen Nolan that got the job done.
Philadelphia was led by their defense, so Hextall always had good players on his team.
And Quebec got straight out in the series against the 93's champions, Montreal... what a great memory it is so all my friend that was chearing for the nordiques and got owned by me with my canadiens..
12 goals in 3 games. Still pretty bad and still 4 goals on average. But in Hextall's defense, it is a bit unfair to place all the blame on him. The Flyers' defense collapsed.
biggest reason why the flyers lost this series was because of turnovers, at least 6 wing goals came off of the Flyers turnovers, but Hextall was pretty terrible
God damn sick hit mate, awesome, even if i don't like that much the Red wings this 97-98 squad was really afraid playing against them, what a definition by Shanahan, also one thing that i remember well is when the Avs and The wings killed each other every game.
I remember watching this as it was just yesterday and the Flyers got killed. Ron Hextall couldn't stop a shot the flyers scored 6 goals in 4 games Eric Lindros only scored once in 4 games I guess the gas tank just
It was right at that moment that Eric Lindros knew that the Flyers weren't gonna stage a miracle comeback, when his world got rocked and all 6'6" of that whiny baby jackhole was hanging upside down at THE JOE!!
Imagine Konstantinov, Probert, Kocur, McCarty, and Shanahan on the ice at the same time. Who's in Goal? Mike Vernon! haha, ask Patty Wah how he fights
LMAO @ the weak "comments" disrespecting Vladdie and the Red Wings! Haters gonna HATE and the Detroit Red Wings will ALWAYS be a better, classier NHL franchise than the Flyers.

Jdub14000 4 years ago

FuturePBABowler 4 years ago 3
yeah, its too bad that Vlad was in that wreck. he has one hell of a player and could check with the best of 'em. I remember watching this on TV and going "OHHHHHHH!!"
Long Live Red Wings

I remember this. This is when I used to actually watch hockey.

The fact that the flyers made the finals with Ron Hextall and Garth Snow shows how weak the east was through the 90's.
fuji9991 4 years ago
That, combined with the Devils winning the Cup as the 5th seed and the Nordiques losing as the #1 seed. The East was weak, but they were very close.
FuturePBABowler 4 years ago
And it still is.
DiddyIsGod 4 years ago
you see the problem is that the West has a better distribution of good talent. The East has more superstars. The East is weak because of the southeast division. Ottawa, philadelphia (except last season), Jersey Devils, montreal, and Pittsburgh are all strong teams from the East as of now. But yea the west is a stronger conference right now.

Crawford1987: Couldn't agree more
We'll see the team who will finish 9th in the East having more points than the SE division champion.

They should have replayed the hit. I was surprised that Hextall lasted so long in the NHL.
dwoodward1 4 years ago
Hextall was always on good teams. He was in the Finals as a rookie, on Quebec's 1993 team that recorded 104 points, on the Islanders team in 1994, and returned to the Flyers in late 1994 where they were contenders every year.
Hextall received credit in Quebec where it was the offense, led by Joe Sakic and also consisted of Mats Sundin, Steve Duschesne, Mike Ricci, and Owen Nolan that got the job done.
Philadelphia was led by their defense, so Hextall always had good players on his team.
FuturePBABowler 4 years ago
And Quebec got straight out in the series against the 93's champions, Montreal... what a great memory it is so all my friend that was chearing for the nordiques and got owned by me with my canadiens..

Hextall was absolutely horrible in this series. 16 goals in 4 games.
FuturePBABowler 4 years ago
snow was in game 2 so hextall let in 12 goals
Frozintoe 2 years ago
12 goals in 3 games. Still pretty bad and still 4 goals on average. But in Hextall's defense, it is a bit unfair to place all the blame on him. The Flyers' defense collapsed.
FuturePBABowler 2 years ago
biggest reason why the flyers lost this series was because of turnovers, at least 6 wing goals came off of the Flyers turnovers, but Hextall was pretty terrible
Frozintoe 2 years ago
Great hockey moment. A glory time in the NHL this was. Now the NHL is filled with sissified young punks complaining about money.
SharksRule86 4 years ago 2
what a great hit, i'll always remember how happy i was, watching in my living room. the flyers got owned, needless to say.

See children, Don't do that, unless the kid you're passing to has it coming to them.
It's as if you could hear the clackety-clack of the Siberian Express coming down the line......

You don't fuck with Vlad. I would have liked to see C. Lemieux do the turtle when Vlad was bitch slapping him.
Robnett 4 years ago 3
He was a big ass fucking player. He'd knock the shit out of you.
eternalxlife 4 years ago
He played big, but Vlad wasn't big at all. 5'10-11" and 185lb or so. He was essentially Yzerman's size.

Konstantinov was one of the best hitters i have ever seen. He was one of my favorite defenders

It was like that hit put the exclamation and puncutation mark on the entire series!

God damn sick hit mate, awesome, even if i don't like that much the Red wings this 97-98 squad was really afraid playing against them, what a definition by Shanahan, also one thing that i remember well is when the Avs and The wings killed each other every game.

Who got rocked by Vladdy?
Red Wings > Flyers in that final

I remember watching this as it was just yesterday and the Flyers got killed. Ron Hextall couldn't stop a shot the flyers scored 6 goals in 4 games Eric Lindros only scored once in 4 games I guess the gas tank just
ran empty.
Flyersfan85 5 years ago
It was right at that moment that Eric Lindros knew that the Flyers weren't gonna stage a miracle comeback, when his world got rocked and all 6'6" of that whiny baby jackhole was hanging upside down at THE JOE!!
Imagine Konstantinov, Probert, Kocur, McCarty, and Shanahan on the ice at the same time. Who's in Goal? Mike Vernon! haha, ask Patty Wah how he fights
