Now I know, what TV-series "opening The Naked Gun"spoofed :-) I love it. Saw some of this series on danish televsion in the sevnties. Just now they are running the old The Rockford Files" for the first time on danish TV with James Garner.
DAAAAMN WHO IS THE GOLDEN BROWN GODDESS, INNA HARTMAN WHAT A NAME FOR A SISTA THOUGH. AHEM! LET ME GET BACK ON TRACK, AHEM HERE. I TOTALLY HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT THIS SERIES. REYNOLDS HAD MAD ATTITUDE IN THIS SHOW, DAMN IM 44, THIESE CLASSIC ALWAYS REMIND ME OF MY AGE, OH WELL THERE ALWAYS INNA.
The scene in the opening credits where he is sliding on the floor towards the camera was filmed at Santa Clara Catholic Church in Oxnard, CA. The inside of the church still looks pretty much the same as it did back in 1970.
@thomascapital Quinn martin became bitter that his last few series flopped caribe a beach combing detective with stacy keach code name diamond head a spy show with france nuygen [ the pilot didnt sell] and superstar about an up and coming detective
I remember Dan August. But then they stopped making the show after Norman Fell and his wife decided to manage an apartment complex somewhere in California....LOL.
@StukInBuf Ironically, I have my TV on the TVLand channel right now and Three's Company is on. But the landlord in this episode is a guy who looks suspiciously like Barney Fife. LOL Now that's good timing!!!
What a killer, killer theme song by the great Dave Grusin. That really theme is virtually an unknown gem. Man, this had my attention as a four year old boy...seeing Burt Reynolds sliding across the floor towards the camera. The opening credits made me want to be a stuntman. And Grusin's theme song started my life long love of great theme songs.
@assignmentearth Dave Grusin did a lot of theme music for TV and the movies as well. The show only lasted one season, but the theme music stil stands out. Truly an unknown gem, but I still remember it.
@spacepatrolman And he's still producing, arranging and perforiming, mostly in Europe and Japan, and several cities in the U.S. His record company, GRP (Grusin-Rosen Productions) produced many artists such as Tom Browne, Dave Valentin, Tom Scott, Spyro Gyra, Acoustic Alchemy and many other artists. And he has performed with some of the giants in the music industry. Truly a well respected musician/composer.
@willardlockejr His latest cd was lite jazz he said he doesnt know if he will make another one because there is no way to market it all the lite jazz stations dried up
@spacepatrolman There is an audience out there for his type of music. I listen to his music (and many other jazz musicians) on XM satellite radio. All the lite jazz stations have pretty much gone away and most radio stations play the same top 40 crap every day, and that gets pretty old. Even the TV shows have almost gotten away from doing the theme music to a series. And I'm just not into the "reality' TV" shows either.
@willardlockejr Im going to listen to that now that record he did where he is wearing a cowboy hat is not country and western hes a jazz pianist from colorado
@spacepatrolman I think you might be referring to the album "Mountain Dance". The one where's he wearing a cowboy hat. And he's definitely NOT country (lol)!!!!!
Aside from Evening Shade, this was Reynold's best TV show. It's a shame he wrecked his face and hair with those gross face surgeries and hair pieces that make it look like he has a dead animal on his head.
In the 70'es we used to run in the schools corridors, then jump forward with the fist pointing shouting "Daaan August" and slide like in the intro. Oh that was fun, seeing this bring back a little smile on my face
One of the great and one of the underrated cop shows that was produced by Quinn Martin and it ran for one season on ABC-TV from 1970 to 1971 producing 26 episodes all in color. After it was cancel in 1971,it ended up in repeats when CBS pick it up for its late night line-up and not to mention the network also brought it on as a summer replacement series in 1973 and 1974.
Remember first coming across this series as reruns at 1am in the late '90s, seemed to be trying to come from more of a social realism angle rather than straight out action-fest, which would've led to its quick demise. Bring back those cheesy -yet-classic series reruns like The Invaders overnight on terrestrial TV instead of news feeds and infomercials for steam cleaners and ab crunchers.
I Used To Watch Dan August When I Was A Little Boy In The 1970's With My Mom In Reruns. Starred Burt Reynolds. What Certain Clothes Did Ena Hartmann Wear In The Series. What Was Her Wardrobe. Was Beginning Of Dacron Synthetic Polyester Gabardine Decade. Which Was The 1970's And Early 1980's. They Should Release That On DVD And Please Get It Over With. Burt Reynolds Was A Woman Beater Jen Did Not Like Burt Reynolds. Remember Dinah Shore And Burt Reynolds From The 1970's
I used to watch that series Three's Company here on british television. Did you know it was from a format of one our british shows called Man About The House?
DA has the best theme song opening , but the show itself was B O R I N G. Weird that Burt Reynolds wasn't used more athletically as the opening credits have no less than 6 Burt action shots. it always made the viewer salivate as to what was to come, however after watching a few episodes, the acting style was tepid for ALL the actors. August seems angry, his coworkers, of which there are too many, are window dressing,Stories were bland. Guest stars were great, though, i dont know...
One of the very best opens for any show in the history of TV! An excellent show that for some reason is rarely mentioned, not even by Burt himself. Amazing how so many mundane shows have been released on DVD..."Dan August" is a classic that lasted just one season and there's very little proof that it ever existed. Whomever owns the Quinn Martin library, you will make some good cash if you release these DVDs of Burt at his finest!
Dan August was one of the best cop shows on in my teens. It had great actors, action, and a super cool theme. Burt Reynolds was great in it and did his own stunts...it was gritty and great. Why isn't it on DVD?
He is a jazz pianist from colorado [he did a record where he is wearing a cowboy hat but its not a country record its a jazz record] dave brubecks father had a ranch in stockton california [he only played country one time when quoted a cowboy song in his piece ode to a cowboy although some body may have requested some country music when he was in the army] .
Nice opening titles-Kinda mannix meets cannon. Reynolds looks perfect. He had to be one of the first ATHLETIC / ACTOR / SUPERSTAR. It became a staple in the 80's and 90's. Fun post, thx!
The series ran for one season on ABC from 1970 to 1971 producing 26 episodes, all in color and under the QM format: (1) Act One; (2) Act Two; (3) Act Three; (4) Act Four; (5) Epilgoue.
