@jmcfintona999 You'd have to ask Merle Haggard as he wrote it. My guess it is as much the story of a Dad having a favourite son, one who was a successfull athlete. And most American football players are well built. Taking more interest in that son and the other. Then realising Billy could show courage and heroism despite not being physically as tall or muscular than his other son. Thats the way i hear it.
