Another point to be made here is what baptism represents, it is into Christ's death (Romans 6:3-9). I doubt the Romans would've cut the thief down to allow him to be baptized before he died. Christ knew that as well and he showed boundless compassion for this thief and bestowed His forgiveness on him.

I have worked with severely handicapped. They are wheelchair bound and very stiff..there is no way they can be physically baptized. Also many are medical fragile and have tubes of different sorts going into their bodies. And people that literally do repent on their death beds. I think God, through His mercy, through the thief, makes exception because of these types of people. To tell them they aren't saved simply because they cannot be dunked in water I think would be wrong on our part.
I DO however sees scriptures strongly tell us to get baptized. So if possible, do so. This shows and obediences to God. But God is not legalist and I think we have to be careful of that. Of putting rule and regulations on people like the Jewish religious leaders did.
I really think its dangerous to add to scripture and assume the thief was baptized before hand. If he had already repented and was saved, the conversation wouldn't have needed to happen. He wouldn't have had to ask Jesus to remember him. How can we say salvation is a free gift BUT you have to do this and that to really be saved?

Another point to be made here is what baptism represents, it is into Christ's death (Romans 6:3-9). I doubt the Romans would've cut the thief down to allow him to be baptized before he died. Christ knew that as well and he showed boundless compassion for this thief and bestowed His forgiveness on him.
You also bring up another great point in that the FIRST Gospel sermon was preached by Peter several days after Christ had died. Where does faith come from? By hearing the word (Romans 10:17).

The scripture indeed confirms that a death must occur before a will can be executed, but that doesn't imply the heirs receive the inheretence on the way to the morg. Besides, He promised salvation BEFORE he died, so even your (Dr. so-and-so's, whom you preacheth) argument falls on its own sword. Jesus executed His will through the work of the Spirit in Jerusalem, just as He said he would (Lk 24:45-49; Acts chpt. 1 & 2).

There is no need to assume the Thief was saved.
1st: Remember he was a Thief (sinner) and "Remember me" is not "Forgive me". Why worry about water baptism....the guy did not even repent (Luke 13:3).
2nd: Paradise is defined by where He went that very day. Where did Jesus go that day? Into hell / Abraham's bosom. Jesus was in the earth 3 days before He ascended into heaven (Matt. 12:40) Thus, everyone who ever died at that time would meet Jesus in Paradise (1 Peter 3:19).

To assert that the thief on the cross was baptized before the cross is jumping through hoops. Furthermore, since Christ died before the thief (John 19:31-33)it is quite possible that the thief did not believe the promise until after Christ died. If that be the case (and it quite possibly is), then that puts the thief in the same dispensation as the rest of us since he lived on into the New Testament age before he died... saved without beging baptized.

When we hear of God's grace it produces faith(Rom. 10:17). That gospel is not a checklist, but rather the story of God's love for us (I Cor. 15:1-4). When we put our faith in that, we have met the only "prerequisite" (for lack of a better word) for salvation (Rom. 3:22). Meeting the one condition God places, we then make a commitment to him, that I won't submit to me anymore (See Rom. 6). and are raised by faith in the resurrection to walk in a new life (see Col 2:12). This, again, is not because of what we have done; but rather, because of what he has done that we can be saved. I don't claim that I was saved because I got wet. Rather, it was when I by faith obeyed Christ that he saved me. Perhaps it would be wise to consider I Pt. 3:21 where Peter says of baptism that it is not the act, but the appeal (my own understanding of that text)which saves because of Christ's appeal.

I would like to submit two things:
A) If the same result is being accomplished (ie ... "you will be saved") then 1. Either scripture is contradictory 2. Each has an equal part in salvation 3. They are all speaking of the same thing
Now... Grant it there is a lot of scripture that speaks of baptism. There are a lot of scriptures that speak of repentance. A lot of passages that speak of confession, and with almost all of these (esp. Believe and Baptism) is submitted (CONTINUED)

There is no power in the water, nor is there any power in any works that we do. I find it interesting that Jesus is the author of salvation to all who obey him (Heb. 5:9) and that those at Rome who were set free from sin had obeyed from the heart a pattern of teaching (Rom. 6:17, cf. But it is when faith becomes obedient that we are saved (cf. Jas. 2:14-26,Heb.11). Nothing that we can do can merit Christ's love and sacrifice. Period.
2) When we are baptized, our faith is in the Gospel. I love the Colossians 2 account (vv.11-13). It speaks of the circumcision not made with hands by putting off the body of flesh. To me, and I may very well be wrong, but this implies a change, ie. repentance. Baptism appears in v. 12. But the power of it all is FAITH. CONTINUED

Saying I believe never allows someone to disobey the gospel. Saying He is my Lord without out doing what He says is self-deception. Matt. 7:21

John the Baptist (the famous baptizer) was born filled with the Holy Spirit in His mother's womb. Knowing this, you have to consider what faith is. Faith is hearing.. the Word of God (The word of God being the word of God and NOT the Holy scriptures)

I have worked with severely handicapped. They are wheelchair bound and very stiff..there is no way they can be physically baptized. Also many are medical fragile and have tubes of different sorts going into their bodies. And people that literally do repent on their death beds. I think God, through His mercy, through the thief, makes exception because of these types of people. To tell them they aren't saved simply because they cannot be dunked in water I think would be wrong on our part.

I DO however sees scriptures strongly tell us to get baptized. So if possible, do so. This shows and obediences to God. But God is not legalist and I think we have to be careful of that. Of putting rule and regulations on people like the Jewish religious leaders did.

I really think its dangerous to add to scripture and assume the thief was baptized before hand. If he had already repented and was saved, the conversation wouldn't have needed to happen. He wouldn't have had to ask Jesus to remember him. How can we say salvation is a free gift BUT you have to do this and that to really be saved?

The Bible says that the The man crucified with Christ was a Thief, Criminal and Malefactor, he was not saved. he met the conditions he believed ,confessed and called on the name of the lord. ROM 10 9 10 13.Then he was saved.
WE are saved the same way through out the old and new testament, that is by believing and acting on the revelation that God has given us.
Abraham believed God,it was accounted to him as Righteousness, Repeated 28 times in the NT and extended to all that believe

Paul was baptized in water, read Acts 22:16.
You cannot selectively take verses from the Bible as though they are the only ones addressing a subject. There is more said about salvation than what is in Jn. 3:16; Acts 16:31; and Rom. 10:9. Namely, on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2, Peter commanded men to repent and be baptized to have their sins remitted (Acts 2:38).

with water someone more powerful will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire (Pentacost), does this mean that baptizim by the Holy Spirit is more powerful than water? Paul was not baptized with water but by the Holy Spirit Acts 9:18
