★☆¸.✫*¨*♦.¸¸.✶ Thank you for all of your wonderful comments. ★☆¸.✫*¨*♦.¸¸.✶ Dad is 84 now and is still setting up his displays at various shows for book signings. He's such a trooper and some great person always helps him set up all the heavy stuff. The kindness of strangers exists; thank you...
I just learned to ride and took my first adventure as a long weekend ride to the Vintage AMA meet in Ohio July 10, 2010. I met and got a signed book and I am several chapters in. Great book so far and has me starting to plan some longer adventures on my Honda. His spirit is inspirational. Thank you Jerry!
Great Story! I will look forward to reading the book.... I have worked in Arabia for 20 years and had the pleasure of riding across the Arabian penisula from Dammam on the eastern shore of the Arabian Gulf to Jeddah on the Red Sea (West coast....). There were twelve of us on Harleys.. I hope to visit personally with Jerry when I am home (Sigourney) next time!
I ran into Jerry at the Cedar Rapids Swap Meet last weekend and had a wonderful time talking to him listening to his stories. Even though I am almost 30 years younger we raced some of the same race tracks. He signed a copy of his book for me and I read it in the next couple of days. It was a wonderful adventure. Hedrick is not far from where I live and if we get some good weather yet this fall I would love to get some of my friends to ride there and visit.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Smith at the vintage AMA meet in Ohio...I had a great time talking with him. After I started reading the book, it was hard to put down. Thanks a million Mr Smith.
Could you please list here where your dad is going to be selling his books? I saw him this weekend at the Iowa City craft show but didnt get to speak to him. I remembered his website and looked it up tonight. Now I could kick myself for not making time to meet and talk to such a special man. You are blessed to have such a great dad! Please dates and places here if that is possible! If not, if you could provide an email for me to contact you. Otherwise, I'll just have to call him at home.:)
Jerry Smith beats England in the race to the elusive OKAPI photo!

London claims to have 1st WILD pic of the Okapi, yet dad took the Okapi's pic 33 yrs ago-see vid
9/11/08 'British team capture first pictures of Africa's unicorn' see excerpt-full story go to link noted:
'LONDON(AFP)-The okapi, an African animal so elusive that it was once believed to be a mythical unicorn, has been photographed in the wild for the first time, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) said Thurs'
***Not only did they NOT take the 1st ever photo, but they took it with a 'Camera Trap'.
My father took 3 pictures of the OKAPI (1 is shown here & also on pg 171 of dad's book) when he was on his motorcycle adventure across Africa!
It was likely an oversight & they did not search the internet for current photos prior to publishing this claim, but dad has now sold 5000 copies; its a published fact.
* I e-mailed Londons Zoological Society (ZSL) regarding the oversight & will post their response here & on TheHeartOfAfrica website
Full article on Yahoo News: YouTube wouldn't let me post the link (so search for Yahoo News Okapi first photo) or go to the ZSL site: w's then zsl, org
Please don't let them take this honor from my dad.
I have read the book. Jerry probably knows my father Melvin Mathias. We have both read it and love the book. It really is awesome! I even ride an old 1976 Honda Cb750 with the Jerry Smith's Cycle Ranch decals on the sidecovers!
2 neat comments about how far reaching dad's bikes have gone...one of our friends was in the Arizona desert & saw an enduro w/ Jerry Smith's Cycle Ranch (JSCR) decals & when my mom & dad rode from IOWA to COLUMBIA on a BMW touring bike, they saw a motorcycle in Central America w/ JSCR decals & dad remembers selling it. You are so nice to respond. Thank you again.
