I have an 89 Dakota, 3.9 V6, but mine is carb, its got a 2 barrel Holley. THe guy i got it from took off the Smog pump so the check engine light is always on and it idles a tad but too high.
I have a 92 and have replaced the fuel pump 3 times since I bought it new. I have known others to have replaced theirs more. It's very common for those to go bad and work sometimes.
Yea, I dunno if it'd be the same.. but on my 89 Ford F-150, it was the oxygen sensor for the "check engine" light. As for the fuel pump.. replace the fuel filter, and clear out your lines, hook it back up and run some good gas with an injector/fuel cleaner through it, and see if it helps - if not, then.. I dont know. lol.
I know this is no help....but don't buy dodges....stick with Chevys. I have a 2 chevy vans and s-10 pick up almost no trouble with them. I have a dodge van always have trouble with it....and I have a Lincoln towncar spent a lot of money on it and it still is giving me trouble. Hope you work it out soon ....if you had it down here in Ohio ...I could get it fixed for you right away. best to you Steve
I have a 96 dakota 3.9, the relays are under the hood, drivers side, between the battery and the brake booster. On mine most of the relays had the same number ,so I would test them by switching them around. I had simular problem,on cold wet days etc.,turned out that the oxgen sensor wire was worn and touching the frame down below on the passenger side, disabling the engine computer,it would run, then not run,stall,backfire..or not even start, and other days it would be fine. Hope this helps.
Man oh man, I had a chrysler convertible and a jeep that had some intermittent electrical connections and it turned out to be dirty connections in the fuse block. Relay and fuse connections had "tarnished" until the car wouldn't even start. I was going to replace the starter when someone told me to clean the connections. On the jeep, the issue was a blower motor control resistor that shut the heater fan off on bumps. Try cleaning connections first before you spend any money.
sounds like a wiring problem. I had a problem like that in my ford zx2. I had the most problems when i was damp. I pulled the wiring harness off and found a few places where it was rubbing up against the metal and shorting out. The humidity diff. made things whose.
Hey bro, I have a 95 Dodge Dakota and I've replaced the ASD relay twice in the three years I;ve had the truck. The relay is located under the hood on drivers side w top of wheel well(at least on my 95). Get yourself a good chilton manual or you can also find one at your library. I think you should try the easy stuff first, replacing a relay is easy and doesnt cost much either. I have the "check engine lite" on my truck, its been shining for a long time, but the truck seems to run ok. good luck!
The Mass Air Flow Sensor is in the same line as the air filter, I can show it to you when I see you next, sometimes you can save them by cleaning them with carb cleaner
I don't see how it could, being throttle-body injected 1989. But I'm not there to open the hood. I heard it rained like mad yesterday. Makes me think cap and rotor.
It seems this has a single coil, next to the water pump. This is most likely an ignition failure. A bad cap and/or rotor.
Coils seldom fail. Your check engine light is mostly like an O2 sensor, as previously stated on here. The check engine light, very seldom, "but can" cause a driveability problem, or shut down. Usually on FI models. WD40 first. Under the cap, too.
All this talk about a fuel pump, or a fuel solenoid, really has nothing to do with the "check engine" light. They will all make the vehicle die, or surge, but something is causing that check engine light to come on. I'm not completly knowledgable in Dodge, but I think it's going to have something to do with the throttle
Spray the wires exposed to moisture with WireDry, or WD40 to get the water out. My PT Crusier starter is getting hinky in Damp weather just clicks, if I jiggle the wires and spray them down to get the water out it starts.....I have had a new starter 2 yrs. ago.
i have a 1989 dodge d-150 pickup truck that had the same problem it was the fuil pump relay mine was on the fenderwell it is a small square box with a big wire plug on the bottem
The fuel pump issue is more than likely a realy which, you should find under the hood in shoe box blastic box, sort of like a bigger fuse box, it will be marked under the cap what is what.
The check engine light is more than likely a bad oxygen sensor, usually about 36.00 buck depending on the car.
How is your oil pressure. The fuel pump relay should be wired through your oil pressure sensor. When you first turn the key to ON there is a short run of the fuel pump to prime the system. Then the fuel pump will not run again until you create oil pressure (start the engine).
If you don't get enough oil pressure the engine will not start. It only takes a second to build pressure with a healthy oil pump.
It's getting cold up there. Cold thick oil is harder to pump. Especially when you have a lot of miles on the engine. When was the last time you did an oil change? Just my .02.
one problum may be your inline fuel filter from your tank. also check your throttle body and see if there are any vacuum hoses loose.have you had any problum with your catalitic converter, if it is that will cause it to stall as well once it heats upmeaning it is getting stopped up. generally your asd relay will be mounted on your throttle body but i am not sure on dodges my friend, hopefully this might help.
hmm, does your truck have a mass air sensor on it,also do you know if it has a balance resister on the firewall,if it is cracked it will cause the same problem you are describing. i asked my brother in law and he said he had that happen to a dodge he had. also you might check emergency fuel shutoff switch which you will find under the passenger side floor board next to the firewall that might be it. it will be just under the carpet on the floor. hopefully that might fix your problem.
no i didnt id that what you are doing now for a living? anyways im going to do a follow up vi tomorow and open the hood but its a 3.9 v6 with a distributar not pionts and condencer i dont think thanks for your help !
Do you have the Haynes book for your truck? if you do check to see if your model has a speed distance sensor in the transmission. My mechanic back when i had my Reliant told me that sometimes when they get old they sporadically fail. Mine would stall the car when it got hot.
if i am not masteaking u need to locate the engine computer try to remove the the main plug and check the connections make shure no moisture and corrosion has messed up the contact's
oh, also you should be able to pull codes with a jumper wire on an 89 vehicle, repair manual will show you how if you can with that model. I could on all my pre 96 chevy vans, used a paper clip.
just had simular prob's on a 98 chevy van 5.7 last year the coil was causing it to die when hot and running, would die wait 15 minutes and run great. this year ignition module was causing the same symptom. it would smell very rotten eggy right before quitting. get a repair manual, will pay off in one repair.
fuel filter 8 bucks replace it regardless. hanyes repair manual 15 bucks, good to have if you plan on running it a couple years, they have all the codes listed, i always buy a haynes repair manual for all my vehicles.
Hey HA, does your truck happen to have a speed/distance sensor by any chance? I had an 88 Reliant with the 2.5 L in line 4. The sucker went bad on me back in 03. I would drive for a while, then the car would stall when it got warm. My mechanic eventually found the problem, but cost me 400$ it was a bad speed/distance sensor. if you are able to check the transmission I think it's there. Hope that helps. Mike, London, On.
hmm not much to go on but I'd be looking for green corrosion on the wires under the fuse box under the hood. Being an older truck thats been hacked up, I'd also check any wires that look like they might have been cut and spliced back together again( Look for black tape that is not the same as the rest. Hope this helps
It wouldn't be a relay, per say. I'd check more into a throttle position sensor. Although MAF sensors are common, you don't always feel much a difference (or at least not in all cases). It is worth checking out though. It sounds to me like it may be more related to the throttle position sensor, especially if the engine just dies when you are driving down the road.
It could and would control the idle. It could also cause the engine to die while driving down the road. I'm not exactly sure (obviously without driving/seeing/diagnosing it myself) Dodge uses for there throttle control, but it seems logical. It seems more logical than a MAF or an MAP sensor. Those would cause an engine to run rough, but not die. It could be a vacuum sensor, or some kind of vacuum issue also.
had a similar problem with an 88 Reliant, and a 92 Caravan. It was the speed/distance sensor, or something like that. it would quit working when the vehicles were too warm. Could be the same problem, seemed to have been a common thing for these years.
Sounds like an electrical issue, as for your check engine light if she will run long enough to get you to an auto store have them pull the codes from the computer with a code reader and have them tell you what they mean.
unfortunitly the part stores in canada dont do that for you it was throwing all kinds aparenlty when i took it to the shop before but alot of things were ripped of it fro the previos owner thanks!
Are you sure that the fuel pump itself is not faulty? Also the fuel filter could need replaced. You might need to check codes again and see what was faulty. Good luck. When was the last time you tunes it up?
Failure symptoms: Problems with Mass Air Flow sensors are common. Bad or contaminated DODGE Dakota Mass Air Flow sensor can possibly cause a wide range of various vehicle drivability problems such as stalling, especially when the engine is cold, misfiring, poor acceleration, etc. In addition, a problem with the Mass Air Flow sensor often causes the "check engine" or "service engine soon" light in the vehicle instrument panel to illuminate.
You need to scan it and find out what codes it's throwing. I think with dodges you can turn the key on and off 3x and on the 3rd time the check engine light will flash. So if it goes flash,flash--pause--flash, then its 21. Count the flashes and post back what code its throwing. Sounds like a bad maf sensor.
did you solve the problem? i had a dodge which quits on hot days only. It turned out that the fuel pump connected was loose and it oxidezed.
