My chemistry professor did that once, the sodium was a cubic cm and was put into a beeker. Needless to say we had fireworks with glass shards near parked cars.
I'm not sure. I think it because that sodium hydroxide will actually (according to my past experiments) dissolves explosively in water at a certain temperature, as it has a very strong affinity for water.
But what about the sodium oxide from it burning in air? How does sodium oxide react with water?
And sodium hydroxide solution is a cleaning chemical and strong base. They actually make this stuff, and I bet it doesn't involve exploding sodium hydroxide. Are you sure sodium hydroxide blows up in contact with water?
Sodium is the 11th element. It's not found in nature very often in it's atomic state since it's so reactive, as seen in the video above. The sodium you consume is not sodium in it's atomic state, but rather it's in an ionic state where it has lost its electron. Or you could google it.
ive seen sodium in water before but never like this lol....why did it pop so hard at the end that glass broke? when our demonstrator put some in water it just fizzed around alot
@kittypurrx dude, lithium is LESS reactive than sodium. and sodium hisses around. judging by the flame, i'd say it was potassium. lithium does hiss and zip around, but less than sodium. rubidium explodes. just youtube alkali metals and there'll be one with a glass bowl. its awesome. seriously.
it is a concentrated sodium which is quite pure. The sodium you'd find in products is not concentrated because it has diluted with acids and alkalines which makes it PH 7
lol we did this in school onc, but something went wrong. when we were done with the container in which we did the experiment, we placed it on the teachers desk, but for some reason, when another student tried to wash it off, the remaining sodium nearly caught them on fire XP
Sodium + Water ==== Sodium Hydroxide

@evansp12 why the sodium ball exploding ? because it's very hot? i thought that only the hydrogen.

2 Na + 2 H2O = 2 NaOH + H2
The H2 contacts with O2 in the air, making fire.

My teacher said that there is a reaction between the sodium and the water;
Na + H20 ---> NaOH + H2
the explosion came from H2 gas, which it burned because of the reaction.
Thumbs up if you're not understand this.

sodium hydorxide? is that regular salt you put on your food?

@oOWinterNightOo salt is NaCl so Sodium Chloride.
duniastaa 11 months ago
@oOWinterNightOo No, but if you want to sprinkle some on some french fries ...
Seriously, sodium hydroxide is commercially referred to as "caustic soda" or "lye". It'd be pretty nasty in your mouth.

When sodium hydroxide forms from sodium touching water, is the resulting sodium hydroxide forming into a melted state or a solid state?
BenHutchinson1 1 year ago
The sodium hydroxide is in the melted state, which then dissolves in water.
evansp12 1 year ago 6
Why did it explode as it was burning out? I thought it would explode at its hottest when it was burning bright yellow.
BenHutchinson1 1 year ago
I'm not sure. I think it because that sodium hydroxide will actually (according to my past experiments) dissolves explosively in water at a certain temperature, as it has a very strong affinity for water.
Anyone who has better answers, please comment.

Sodium oxide reacts violently with water, forming sodium hydroxide. Hot, molten sodium hydroxide does react explosively with water.
evansp12 1 year ago
@evansp12 The reaction produces NaOH and H2 gas. You may have ignited the H2 gas and made a small explosion.
