Well, Mario Kart for the GBA also had 4 cups and 16 courses. But now they have 8 cups and 32 courses.

maro kart for GBA had 40 courses, 16 for the regular, a special cup with 4, so thats 20, then they had 5 more "extra" cups of 4 courses each, so thats 40.
