epic vid, but im not too familiar w/ the game. i know that the goal is to pass the firsbee through the end zone. i was wondering why in the video sometimes the player would catch the disc and instead of stopping because i think youre not allowed to take anymore steps, they run n jump around or just toss the disc up like at 1:22 and they kinda celebrate? is that the end of the game? i thought points are only received when you pass the end zone. sorry if this is a dumb question

@CoolButNotReally Im somewhat of an amature at the sport but from what I know the player can call a foul if the other player bumps into your arm while your catching it causing you to miss. So like if both players jump for the frisbee and the player is reaching for it and your hand is perfectly alined to catch the frisbee, and then all of the sudden the opposing team bumps your arm causing you to miss the catch it is then called a foul. I believe that is how its done.

The objective is Team A must pass it to each other (after catching the disc they can take no steps other than a pivot foot) till they get into team B's endzone. If they get in its 1 point. Team B must defend by either intercepting Team A's throws, knocking the frisbee to the ground, or just causing Team A to drop it. If that happends then team B is on O going the other way, A defends

team defense often attempts to shut down an entire side of the field to limit the thrower to one side, but in this case the defender is basically allowing the throw to pass.

The other thing is that everyone on the field is always playing both offense and defense, and everyone is always involved, unlike soccer with static positions. ultimate players value a diving defensive play over diving catches... defense is what the game is really about !

The catch at 0:47 is a flagrant vertical space violation against _two_ opponents.

Every highlight reel I see from the past few years features these huge vertical leaps for catches that knock one, two, three other players over in the process. According to the rule book _THAT'S A FOUL_ not a highlight reel catch.

Does vertical space simply not get called anymore in competitive play in an attempt to make the game ESPN friendly?

At 0:47, there is no contact preventing a blue player from catching the disc; rather, they don't catch it because Beau (#50 in red) gets there first and highest. Any subsequent contact is irrelevant.

@42kernal ~ I've been playing this game for 20 years. These interpretations of the rules are new, and clearly intended to add excitement at the expense of safety and civility. In football, so long as you get to it first, no foul. But disc is not football. Jumping in laterally with such force that you knock people over is (was) a foul in disc. You deny someone their vertical space by hitting them so hard that they are now in a _different_ space. To beat someone to the disc you go _straight up_.

The player who did not jump, for example, wasn't going to get the disc and therefore any contact with him is irrelevant and incidental. Also, denying someone their vertical space by moving them sideways is also irrelevant to the principle of verticality (though a reasonable normal foul).

Knocking over three players, two opposing and one of your own teammates, en route to the disc, cannot possibly be interpreted as "incidental", therefore that was a foul. If current readings and interpretations say otherwise, one must conclude that no contact sports don't "sell" and ultimate is trying to "sell".

I guarantee that if they thought a call as warranted, they would have made it. Also, you're arguing the wrong part of the rules: knocking someone over isn't necessarily more-than-incidental contact, but it may fall under "reckless disregard for safety."

@infinitesimal10 its called a callahan. this happens when you catch an opponent's pass in the endzone that you are attacking. in this case, the white guy was standing in his own endzone, probably because he just caught the pull. he tried to pass to his teammate, who is still in their endzone. the guy in red caught the disc in the endzone that the red team is attacking. in this case, you wouldnt bring the disc out of the endzone and tap it in again, it counts as a score
