epic vid, but im not too familiar w/ the game. i know that the goal is to pass the firsbee through the end zone. i was wondering why in the video sometimes the player would catch the disc and instead of stopping because i think youre not allowed to take anymore steps, they run n jump around or just toss the disc up like at 1:22 and they kinda celebrate? is that the end of the game? i thought points are only received when you pass the end zone. sorry if this is a dumb question
So what's the actual rule about contact when going for a disc? If two players jump for the same disc and smack into each other in the air, is that a foul or what?
@CoolButNotReally Im somewhat of an amature at the sport but from what I know the player can call a foul if the other player bumps into your arm while your catching it causing you to miss. So like if both players jump for the frisbee and the player is reaching for it and your hand is perfectly alined to catch the frisbee, and then all of the sudden the opposing team bumps your arm causing you to miss the catch it is then called a foul. I believe that is how its done.
@DrZ0idBerg011 there are 2 endzones, one team wants to go to one endzone the other wants to go teh other endzone. The objective is Team A must pass it to each other (after catching the disc they can take no steps other than a pivot foot) till they get into team B's endzone. If they get in its 1 point. Team B must defend by either intercepting Team A's throws, knocking the frisbee to the ground, or just causing Team A to drop it. If that happends then team B is on O going the other way, A defends
@whatthedew No, whats so hard about throwing a disk around? It's sad that you like this shit and you defend it. Stop being such a pussy and play a real sport.
@spizec I bet you got raped and don't want to do anything because you don't want to get raped again so you hate on real sports. You can't even run without your ass hurtin.
team defense often attempts to shut down an entire side of the field to limit the thrower to one side, but in this case the defender is basically allowing the throw to pass.
The other thing is that everyone on the field is always playing both offense and defense, and everyone is always involved, unlike soccer with static positions. ultimate players value a diving defensive play over diving catches... defense is what the game is really about !
the comments about ultimate being a sport or not are being provided by total jerks who are all clueless. pay them no mind.
ultimate is not all about making a big catch, its a field strategy game with an extremely important yet totally overlooked apect...
the disc can be released from BOTH SIDES OF THE BODY. The defender must therefore play a game of poker with the thower and the thower must fake out the defender with hand pumps.
sport (n)-"competitive physical activity: an individual or group competitive activity involving physical exertion or skill, governed by rules, and sometimes engaged in professionally." now lets think about this for a second. is ultimate participated in competitively? check. does ultimate require physical exertion or skill? how about both? check. is ultimate governed by rules? check. is it sometimes engaged in professionally? check.
The catch at 0:47 is a flagrant vertical space violation against _two_ opponents.
Every highlight reel I see from the past few years features these huge vertical leaps for catches that knock one, two, three other players over in the process. According to the rule book _THAT'S A FOUL_ not a highlight reel catch.
Does vertical space simply not get called anymore in competitive play in an attempt to make the game ESPN friendly?
@jhimm It's not a foul: The principle of verticality does NOT state that entering someone's airspace is necessarily a foul. At 0:47, there is no contact preventing a blue player from catching the disc; rather, they don't catch it because Beau (#50 in red) gets there first and highest. Any subsequent contact is irrelevant.
@42kernal ~ I've been playing this game for 20 years. These interpretations of the rules are new, and clearly intended to add excitement at the expense of safety and civility. In football, so long as you get to it first, no foul. But disc is not football. Jumping in laterally with such force that you knock people over is (was) a foul in disc. You deny someone their vertical space by hitting them so hard that they are now in a _different_ space. To beat someone to the disc you go _straight up_.
@jhimm Incidental contact is contact defined as contact that has no effect on the play. The player who did not jump, for example, wasn't going to get the disc and therefore any contact with him is irrelevant and incidental. Also, denying someone their vertical space by moving them sideways is also irrelevant to the principle of verticality (though a reasonable normal foul).
@42kernal ~ Put more simply, the spirit of the game is no contact. A reading of the rules makes it clear that anything beyond "incidental" contact, of any form, is a violation. Knocking over three players, two opposing and one of your own teammates, en route to the disc, cannot possibly be interpreted as "incidental", therefore that was a foul. If current readings and interpretations say otherwise, one must conclude that no contact sports don't "sell" and ultimate is trying to "sell".
@jhimm Incidental contact is by definition irrelevant. The players best positioned to judge whether or not the contact mattered are the defenders in blue, and none of them made a call. I guarantee that if they thought a call as warranted, they would have made it. Also, you're arguing the wrong part of the rules: knocking someone over isn't necessarily more-than-incidental contact, but it may fall under "reckless disregard for safety."
I just started playing this game. I must say it is the funnest game ive ever played. And one of the most physically demanding. It's like soccer, except sprinting nonstop
At 1:20, the guy in white throws a pass, and a player in red catches the pass. He then immediately starts celebrating with his team... Why does he do that? If a player on the opposing team throws a pass and you catch it, it shouldn't count as a score, right?
@infinitesimal10 its called a callahan. this happens when you catch an opponent's pass in the endzone that you are attacking. in this case, the white guy was standing in his own endzone, probably because he just caught the pull. he tried to pass to his teammate, who is still in their endzone. the guy in red caught the disc in the endzone that the red team is attacking. in this case, you wouldnt bring the disc out of the endzone and tap it in again, it counts as a score
why dont you do a bit of research before you say "Lol it isnt a sport". it happens to be the greatest sport on the plannet. ultimate players are the most athletic (and the coolest) competetors, any one of us can run a 10 k and not even break a sweat. come out AND WATCH A GAME AND THEN TELL ME THIS ISNT A SPORT. We average running 4 miles during every game, and that's all guts out sprinting. A weekend tournament can involve as many as 11 games. do the math. we are iron men, every one of us!
@discflickerDotcom k relax there buddy. no doubt u gotta be in shape for this game. but dont start going off on "most athletic" and "greatest sport on the planet". u wanna see the most athletic men on the planet? turn on an ur tv on a Sunday morning and watch those men go to war. and schools to pay u to go play frisbee for them lol so idk if its really too much of a sport. its a game. but if its the greatest then thats ur opinion not the rest of the worlds
@CinnamonBunz55 good luck proving that a competition in which you run just as much soccer/rugbee isn't a sport. keep sittin on ur ass and watchin tv :)
@orryshamash good luck proving that a game that involves a frisbee is a sport. hahaha i would say go back to watching this on tv but its not. cuz football is. lol
@ImXylitol never. but sports are out on tv for a reason. cuz people enjoy them and are interested. im not saying that these catches arent cool looking but my objection was aimed at discflicker who said things like "greatest sport on the planet" and ultimate athletes and most athletic and blah blah blah. please comment on the point i am making not one sarcastic sentence
@discflickerDotcom the day i see you sprinting your guts out 11 games straight averaging 4 miles a game will be the day that ultimate frisbee becomes America's sport. In other words it won't happen.
@AmplifySwagg in any major tournament played over 2 - 3 days it is TYPICAL to run that much. i saw one team from new york make it all the way to the finals starting with only 2 subs, and one of those got injured the first day. this is an unbelieveable demonstration of strength and endurance. if you question the distances run or the fact that its all sprinting, you have no basis... these are facts based upon gps measurement of typical games; 6 miles are run.
@thejackster135 everyone has an opinion and mine is that this isnt a sport you may beg to differ but my opinion remains the same i love boxing and some people say its not a sport its just two guys getting paid to fight but ill always think it is a true sport thats my opinion
i don't know about the rest of you... but i'm not a huge fan of people slamming the disk after a good play. Ultimate has a reputation for good sportsmanship guys... lets keep it that way
@P8ballK0 how is that unsportmanly? that's like saying Tiger Woods' famous fist pump isn't good sportsmanship.... it's a product of performing a great feat/play and being overcome with emotion. I do that type of stuff in every sport i play because of precisely that.
@jagcag1230:58 he didn't pass it to himself, he went up for the catch, got bumped and missed. He recovers his balance, notices the disc still flying, and bids to grab it. That, my friend, is an incredible play.
@jagcag123 its only an illegal play if "mike grant" intentionally tipped the disc to himself to gain more yards but since they were both going for it and the disc got tip unintentionally the play would still stand.
I think that Sockeye catch might be Tyler Kinley, not Nate Castine if I remember correctly from when it was COTD. I might be wrong though. Great video!
I can't actually pick out 1 particular scene from that video beucase they are all so damn amazing. I particularly like Nate Castine's hammer grab for style and spike. Well done Ultivillage. I will be tuned for the USA Ultimate 2010 series.
This highlight reel is not strictly a "Best Highlight" reel, but a combination of my best highlights and an opportunity to showcase the players who have made the biggest impact in the major tournaments that I have covered.
This is my attempt to tell the story of UltiVillage in a way that will captivate the attention of ultimate fans and anyone who can appreciate the athleticism this sport requires to play at the elite level.
I cannot take the guy at 3:33 seriously with that bald spot...

P8ballK0 11 months ago
@P8ballK0 how is that unsportmanly? that's like saying Tiger Woods' famous fist pump isn't good sportsmanship.... it's a product of performing a great feat/play and being overcome with emotion. I do that type of stuff in every sport i play because of precisely that.

@jagcag123 not at all. I would consider that a bobble for sure. There is no way you can say that he had possession of that disc.
bballin991 1 year ago
0:58 to 1:04 is illegal, he passed to himself which is illegal... making it not such a great play...
jagcag123 1 year ago
@jagcag123 0:58 he didn't pass it to himself, he went up for the catch, got bumped and missed. He recovers his balance, notices the disc still flying, and bids to grab it. That, my friend, is an incredible play.
marquesbrownlee 1 year ago
@jagcag123 its only an illegal play if "mike grant" intentionally tipped the disc to himself to gain more yards but since they were both going for it and the disc got tip unintentionally the play would still stand.

The ridiculous mac grab at 2:01 is Angus Keenan (Thong vs Buzz Bullets 2006 WUCC open final). Freak!

Stay tuned for the women's version coming soon.

Some awesome plays for sure, but there are some surprisingly... bland throws+catches for a "Best Ever" video
