I've heard 3 versions of this song. The first starts with a riff and, suddenly, turns into a "spacey", atmospheric piece. It ends with "You let the people down". Here, Thom takes this verse and turns it into a chorus - almost as if he didn't like the result of the other version and tried to alter it. It sounds way less agressive. In the studio, they dropped the chorus and the riff, investing in a "cosmic" ambience. In my opinion, it didn't work. They should have stuck with the first attempt.
IR is my favorite era of Radiohead. So organic, so brilliant. It takes all they learned from their influences and experiments and combines them with old songs (Nude, Up On The Ladder) with new songs of brilliance (15 Step, which taught me to dance to 5/4 and Weird Fishes and Videotape and Go Slowly and shit there are too many.)
Did they ever play this on the 08 tour or Down Is The New Up? They're (along with Cuttooth and Talk Show Host) are the best B-Sides from any band EVER
also its an older song, it was recorded in the Kid A/mnesiac period. They never released it then, and played it back in 02 a couple times, other then that they never played it. I think they thought it was a good song now, and it should be released, but they didnt wanna learn it again, this may be the most we'll get.
i dont think that this is their strongest performance; but they are really good unplugged. check out there there and you, which is just with thom and johnny. really good stuff
For what it's worth: I believe that Thom Yorke said that he creates the songs acoustically and then later converts it into an electric guitar version. So for all Radiohead fans, it's like hearing a "purer version".
Seriously Radiohead are the most amazing musicians...how they can manipulate their instruments is amazing but this shows how accoplished they are all round. Not the best of performances but still amazing and held me till the last second.
I just love Kid A this album. Isolated and dark, yes, but is this WHAT WE FEEL until now after year 2000! Wars, Economic downturn, genetic science, IT advancement. Don't you feel that all these make our life WORSER BUT NOT BETTER?
I think KID A and AMNESIAC these two albums are so genuine, telling us something in which everyone don't wanna face in these years, and we don't even have the courage to mention it.
I quite agree with you. I also feel, that radiohead have mellowed abit with age, but it is still true that they are still writing about this stuff. Don't like the way they consigned the songs which deal with the more difficult subject matter on this last album to the b-side (such as Up on the ladder & 4-minute warning). The tracklisting of the a-side of In Rainbows reeks slightly of commercial compromise, which was a strange move since it wasn't marketed at-all that way , being downloadable.
I think that's a bit of a narrow view. I think Bodysnatchers is probably the biggest exclamation point on the record, in clear view at track 2. I think, barring interpretations, that Faust Arp and Nude are 2 pretty good comments on 'difficult subject matter.' The 'B-side', is pretty widely available at this point anyway. The album cut of this is definitely a favorite for me.
Alright, people tend to overanalyse the music a bit after awhile (myself included). Kid A and Amnesiac were definitely much darker and mysterious then the previous albums, but I don't know if they were like barely remembered dreams (sorry, buddy). I think Hail to the Thief contains a lot of frustration underneath the surface, and In Rainbows is sort of calm and intense at the same time, like in Reckoner.
to everyone below, this song was written during the kid a sessions, according to rolling stone.
Hope that solves the mystery. It really does fit that period, when you consider the album version of it, which is synth heavy, dark, and paranoid, kind of reminds me of the feel of dollars¢s, for instance. But somehow not out of place on ir.
...as for the nursery rhyme comments..just think back to ok comp-no surprises, kid A-KID A,in rainbows-all i need..these all hold nursery rhyme-esque chimes so its not just a one off thing. Radiohead forever!!!!
people make me laugh with there labless on radioheads music...there albums are too deep to tag with one name for the feel of it..hail to the thief was like the cabin of sweets in hansal n grettle..all the different flavours and sweet on the surface but inside is a dark creepy old house with mystical powers...
thats cause it was written during httt. how does it sound like amnesiac? can't really see this fitting with knives out and dollars and cents... it sounds in rainbowsy.
Actually, i know just what dmoniker means. In Rainbows is like rippling pools whereas Amnesiac and co are more like barely remembered dreams. There's a method in the naming madness you know. I love both of those albums by the way.
he's got the a string tuned up to a B. and it's easy to play. first chord (x05000) then to, (x04000), then up to (x07000) then back to (x0500). repeat. you can figure out the rest.
I've met several people that didn't know who Radiohead was. If all you listen to is top 40 you can go your entire life without knowing there's anything better out there. You're only clever if you convince us that something totally outside the realm of possibility is real.
Don't get me wrong, It's a great performance... But that d-string (dropped e) is flat, and you can notice it in how Thom plays, he kind of tries to avoid hitting it, but it is not possible especially around 3:00 during the interlude.

The line sung in this version is "You've let your/the people down". Hopefully that helps make more sense in the context of the song.
The ablum version lrics appears to be "Thom, oh the little ones".
