James Carter is a saxophonist's saxophonist and a musician's musician. He a once in a lifetime musician. I love Kenny Garrett he is one of the best alto players of his or any other generation. However, James Carter is in a league of his own.
both of them play out of tune. but that's not that big of a deal. and kenny garrett uses the sharp tuning in his soloing cause he wants to. it's not like he doesn't have good years
eh, Sonny Rollins' sound is to monstrous...not that that's bad but it's also not very in tune either...listen to Kenny Garrett...may have simpler licks and sound, but he's got it...:)
Pt2..eyes-rolled-back-into-his-head blissful, stand-up-and-stomp-and-shout-in-church kind of inspiring, sultry, freakin' freaky! And sometimes he just has to stomp & shout himself. Sweet-hearted soul. His band - a whole other story! Imagine piano-Gibbs, bass-Armstrong & drums-King that keep up with him in their own right! Trumpeter,Taylor touring w/ now. Do yourself a huge favor. Pay whatever you have to. Go wherever you have to. See, feel, drink in this sweet nectar, offered from the heart.
Pt1 - Yoshi's Oakland last 2 nights, saw 4 shows. Indescribable, but i gotta give props! James vulnerably & openly takes you on an intimate journey into his inner world of boundless beauty, emotion & love, unmistakably understood, as he conducts & translates it through his body and passes it through his horns into sound, with everything from heart-bursting blasts to whispers..at times ecstatic, sexy [i mean women-sighing-intimate-sighs-out-loud kind of sexy], melodic, heart-breaking,...
James Carter has such a brutal approach to playing the horn. His solos are primal, searching, pushing the boundaries of what his mind is capable of. Its fantastic to hear this artist do what he does best, burn the crap out of that horn!!!
couldn't everything but you never seem to know what this guy will play next. We are blessed to have such a virtuoso alive in our lifetime! Much like Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, the more people that hate it, the bolder the statement is and plenty of people love the truth in it.
He is a person who came with something different then the routine that we always hear. As same as any artist who wanted to break away and cut loose free of what others do. he caught my attention when I first heard him in 1995 (Jurassic Classic).
I'm not a big fan of James Carter's playing. I'm not saying that hate it, i just don't prefer it. But you have to admit it that he has found a style a ran with and everyone seems to like ALOT. Of all the James Carter vids this is definatley my favorite
hey! we have exact the same opinion about james carter! It's not that he can't play but I don't like his style to much ... maybe it's something to rough?
rough is right on the head..from an era when you played headliner one side of the tracks and slept after that after hours set on the other, when there was a 38 strapped to the back of the bass,a 22 under the piano players sack, and when the frontman said "bimyaw" you hauled ass without hesitation...yes, carter is a throwback to a place and time that made a lot of folks.."uncomfortable"...
I just saw James Carter last night in my town! I got a tenor Placticover 2.5 reed that he threw on stage towards the end of his performance. He signed my ticket stub. I had a chance to talk to him afterwards with my band director and a couple other kids. He is amazing.
GUYS YOU SHOULD ALL CHECK OUT A DUDE CALLED EARL BOSTIC IF YOURE INTO THIS

James Carter may be the bravest saxophonist other than Sonny Rollins I know of. James really knows who he is!

Saw him in the Robert Altman film Kansas City... worth seeing just for the jazz (and also for Harry Belafonte acting like the Godfather)

James Carter played very well that night, especially with his own band. I didn't like the rythmn section of the Concertgebouw Jazz Orchestra.
He played a few very good heavy tunes, too bad they didn't put that online.
