So, after all these years I finally, finally here it explained by the man himself. I was a kid, and that was a night I will never forget. Hard to believe that was 34 years ago. Reggie had already hit the first two out, and I remember my dad saying "if he hits another one out, that place is going to go nuts". We all know what happened, and within moments an addition to baseball history was made. Wish someone would post footage of Reggie hitting the light tower in Detroit during an All-Star game.
A TRUE STORY ABOUT JOE FRAZIER: I was at a sport dinner at the Plaza in NY when I was 13 years old, it was a sport dinner for Reggie Jackson. I asked Reggie for his autograph and he said he was eating—while he held a breadstick in his hand. Joe saw me feeling down and called me over, "come here kid I'll give you mine" I thanked him and then he said to Reggie, you do that to one more kid and i'll take care of you real good.
Man, my eyes became wide open with joy and I never forgot that.
@broadjumper1 The thing about Reggie is that he has never been too open to talk about his charity work, his REAL charity work helping kids in poverty not only in the US but also in hispanoamerica. Reggie walks the walk and talks the talk, and he brags about lots of things, he tries to put on a show, that's his "persona", but behind courtains he is different.
@MikhelBL - I don't deny he's done lots of charity work. That doesn't mean he's not one of the most arrogant, egotistical, unpleasant persons I've ever met. I saw him frequently treat people that worked with him like so garbage...that has nothing to do with putting on a show. I used to work in a company that had a business relationship with him and like I said, GREAT ballplayer. LOUSY, nasty, uncivil human being.
I saw Reggie in Detroit on his 40th birthday. He was 2 for 2 with a dinger, (if my old memory serves me right). Too bad though, the game was rained out in the 4th inning. Homer didn't count.....: )
My new book on Reggie's great 1978 Yankees team, The Greatest Comeback Ever, is the only book ever written by a fan, live-time on a great sports season. It's available at Amazon.

Reggie Jackson was a great player, but a lousy human being. He's one of the most arrogant, egotistical, unpleasant persons...and yes, I've met him.
