I've just followed your steps to upgrade my own HDD but I kept getting the error message 'could not recognise the hard drive'. By then I couldn't eject the installation disk either so I had to remove it, swap back to my old one and reboot again to eject the disk. The new one is formatted but I just can't get it to recognise the new one?
Helped à lot. You forgot to take the screwes from your old drive and put them on your new one. Now youre drive will bounce up and down in your laptop! And in every laptop from people who followed your example
i noticed in your other video you said you have an HDTV and i see it there that you had it connected through mini display port connector to VGA which is good but cannot handle HD quality picture so if you wanted to you can get a mini display port to HDMI input and connect to your HDTV for the best picture…i almost made the same mistake so just trying to help
so just to be clear if you are restoring your mac from a time machine backup after installing the new hard drive, you still need to put in the snow leopard installation disk?
@lol666 yes you need to format it using the install DVD, but only if it is not pre-formatted, but even if it is formatted its probably done with FAT, and we need the apple HFSJ, so.. yes you will need to format it, just as he shows it in the vid
Another add on should be that if you have upgraded operating system (like from Leopard to Snow Leopard) make sure that you put the same operating system CD in to reboot as the one that you have made your time machine back-up with so they match us.
In other words, I backed up using Snow Leopard and tried to recover my time machine back-up using the original Leopard CD that came with my mac and it didn't work. When I tried again with the Snow Leopard CD it worked like a charm!
you forgot to mention to take of the T6 size torq screws off of the old hard drive and screw it into the new one, these 4 screws hold the hard drive in place!!!!!!!!!!
there is an add on video regarding this. I completely forgot this and found that something was wrong when the computer was really loud. =P but there is a video showing that extra step. Thanks, I added the vid as a video response and put a link in the description so it'll be easier for people to find it.
80 GB would be perfect but most of the time they are 250 GB or more so that would be good. It depends if you have 250GB internal hard drive then you would only need about 80GB of external.
@huskermania Hey i noticed that you got the 7200 rpm hard drive.. what do you think of it? Does it burn out your battery faster? Does your computer run hotter now? I was trying to find all of this out. Ive been comparing the 5400 vs the 7200 500gb seagate hard drive
$160 for 500gb? Holy ish! I would of held off or maybe gotten the 5400 version for now knowing SSD are around the corner of becoming affordable. I got a 500gb 5400rpm WD for $99 at frys.
just wondering. is this hard drive loud at all? or was it just as quiet as you original apple hard drive
