@bobshenix Jerry's full of surprises; you need to hear his "Amazing Grace," and "Drifting Too Far From the Shore." Notwithstanding his gospel works, don't you think that some of his songs like "So Many Roads" have a spiritual aspect to them or is it just his method of delivery? A facinating person searching for the right path; "All I want is one to take me home." Or maybe I 'm reading too much into it.
In fact, Jerry probably couldn't believe "that chick" even wanted to sit next to him. In 1970, Jerry was just a cool guy in a 4-year old band. Sylvia Tyson wasn't "some groupie". Ian and Sylvia were a long established Canadian folk duo greatly admired by Dylan, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen..and she wrote "You Were On My Mind"--a huge hit.
Heres the deal with this song, which he sang many times with Weir , John Dawson, and David Nelson. He kind of rushed thru it, didnt really have any accompaniment- Harmony to help him get thru the song which is really a great Old Time Gospel Tune
Singing about making it thru life without Jesus. Jerry wasnt religious but had a great spiritual connection...So....God Bless 'im
why is everyone commenting so focused on Sylvia like she is just some groupie on the train? She and her husband Ian performed on the tour with them... look up Ian and Sylvia and also the band Great Speckled Bird for some education....
i can't explain how brilliant this is. I first discovered Cold Jordan from Dick's PIck's 8 and Festival Express just so happened to be on documentary channel today and i saw this and got chills.
She's like "take me out on the road jerry". Hes' like "no I won't take you on the road but I will take you tonight....wonder who that is?? what a body
God, that's where IT is, I hope I'll be able to inspire someone to play someday the way THE man could... brings tears to my eyes, and this was just him off the cuff... How many times can we say we miss you before we can have you back??
@420timetoburn I know it's a state of mind. If i thought it was a look, I would have said she might have been hippie here. I meant her state of mind wasn't really hippie. It's country or folk because that is her style of music and in interviews and what not she doesn't really seem hippie. I don't know the woman personally and there are different types of hippies of course but....well nevermind
you people are really weird. why does everyone think about sex constantly? this song is absolutely incredible, hopefully that'd be more interesting than jerry's sex life
K, he's singing about Jesus, but all the comments to this vid are about sex. Listen to what he's singing about, and get y'all heads out the gutter...And watch festival express, Janis is in it, too. Peace be with them both!
I just watched it last night for the first time...some KILLER performances by The Dead, Joplin, Buddy Guy, AND The Band...that tour was like no other - it captured all of them barely post-woodstock and fresh off the high of a golden age in music.
she is so typical, and not that hot. You folks needa run with a different crowd that fits to you, maybe you will find a generic everyday chick like this after all.
that look Jerry gives her at 0:12 is priceless... hilarious. i like how she is adding her little vocal nuances to the song, adds a particular feel to the song.
That is true Garcia. Thanx for the post. He is a friend of Jesus...Funny he was singing about a friend of the dev-- earlier. I know Jerry is a friend of Jesus and NOT the dev--.!! Bless you...
@silentdreemz85 I have many of Grisman and Garcia's recording's together. My favorites are Old & In the Way, Grateful Dawg, and especially Pizza Tapes with Toni Rice. I cannot forget Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions! You know about that album & have it in your playlist right??? Jerry, Pigpen, and Bob doing entirely jug band songs complete with kazoos, washboard, washtub, harmonica, banjo, guitar, and jug. Awesome album! I link the info from the album to grateful dead info at wikipedia.
@austinitesince1979 i dont understand how that has anything to do with my comment. i already knew what you told me. im just saying if you like jerry acoustic then just listen to him and grisman.
@austinitesince1979 Yea I know about it all. I have it all. I have everything I could find. About 200GB of Anything Jerry came close too. You're a rare breed even amongst dead heads. Good Person.
Wow! 200GB!?!! cool. i was just continuing to talk about other acoustic Garcia recordings. I was born in 1979, and I didn't start playing guitar until 1994, when a freshman in high school. I've still never seen the Grateful Dead in concert. I do love their music. I found Working Man's Dead, and that is still my favorite album. I listen to some of their concerts. I really like it when they do acoustic more than any electric guitar, even though Jerry is great at it all.
@silentdreemz85 Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions (album) is a recorded concert at Top of the Tangent in Palo Alto, California (July, 1964) of the 3 singer (Jerry, Bob, Pigpen)acoustic band that became The Warlocks afterwards and would later finally become The Grateful Dead by 1965. Grateful Dead were recorded at over 2000 concerts by their fans. The tapes weren't found until 2 years after Jerry died. It was released as an official album 2 years later in 1999, 35 years after it was recorded.
