@director10min - To be completely honest you're just being ripped off by paying/using MS products. You spend more time fixing problems than actually using the damn OS. Been using using linux for some time now and I can honestly say I don't look back. And it's free!
To conclude - You're a retard for your stupid comments and your insufficient knowledge of OS's.
Nope, you just boot to a live cd and you can try out the operating system then just reboot and remove the cd. The live cd needs to work with your processor of course.
By default, CTRL+ALT+Arrow Keys to rotate it, to zoom it and drag, CTRL+ALT+Move Mouse. I know you probably figured this out by now (2 weeks ago) but this may be of further use to some newcomers.
Also, if you sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager you can launch it (cssm in term) and clicking on an option will show you what keys it uses.
I've been a big Windows XP fan, and up to now I hated Linux (tried Kubuntu, et al). But I downloaded PC Linux OS 2009 just to test my new Virtual Box installation... And I'm so impressed that I'm now in the process of cleaning out my Windows XP so I can FORMAT and migrate 100% to PC Linux OS! I never liked Linux 'cuz it's too complicated and just plain weird, but this distro is great. It even has a nice GUI (trust me--I'm an artist).
It's true, I would recommend you to use Linux Mint which is a "out of the box" version of Ubuntu. PCLinuxOS still have a lot to do to become user-friendly

Untrue, "universal installer" has nothing to do with "plug and play". Install packages from the repositories provided by the distributor. Windows is the same way, the Windows equivalent would be a program that's distributed via a zip file. What does a end user do when they open the zip file? Look for a readme? A properly packaged Linux application installs similarly to a Windows install shield package.

No you can use Ubuntu or PC Linux that are very simple and would work nicely. You don't need any technical knowledge if you only going to be using internet, instant messenger, playing videos and music. However there not many games on Linux but lots of Other security and programming, or web developing tools, Linux is a great os for advanced users, but if you tired of virus and just want to be on the intert and watch vides and play music, i would say linux would be the best choice
PcLinuxOS does rock & (Ubuntu, fedora and suse) suck. PcLinuxOS comes with all of the codecs I need plus java & flash & on (Ubuntu, fedora and suse) Good luck searching & trying o install flash which is heel to do using those other linux distro's. To me PcLinuxOS is the best along with Mepis Linux & the best looking Distro is Dream Linux
I would like to point out that in gnome its easy to enable compiz features and the following distros can use gnome: Every single *nix system. Meaning it is not just PClinuxOS but debian, freebbsd (unix) and anything else in the world. Even solaris I believe. Some distros like ubuntu and PCLinuxOS come with it enabled to impress people. It just uses up system resources to me personally.
im looking at laptops for college and ive been loving the black MacBook w/ a 250 GB hard drive, Leopard, 2.4 GHz, and 1 GB RAM, but i started looking at linux as an OS to use, what are the advantages/disadvantages? im ok w/computers, i know some tricks and how to use them pretty well, but im just wondering what would be your choice? (cost isn't really a factor)
Mac pcs is always better than any thing else.. go get Macbook.. if this "tricks" you know includes the open source programming, get Linux.. Ubuntu or Mandriva will be just great.
if you aren't planning for programming you may keep your lovely Leopard..
this is just like how i have a finger scanner on my hp pavillion dv600 it is realy cool wen u buy it and use it all the time but then it just gets annoying
Well Clearly you are not as smart as most "nerds" here. First of all we are not talking about a PC but a operating system. And its people like you who will make the things in the shops (software) to expensive. Linux/Windows/MAC/unix its all about choice. Luckely we are not all like you. We make clear with this little clip that you dont have to spend a lot to have the full features and more. But looking at your language you won't understand.
I'd like to use it, but i can't, because i need Corel and engrave for my work... and sadly it won't run under wine :( I even tried to run windows in virtualbox and run corel in it but it's hell too slow. I was thinking about dual boot, but i dunno, it's somehow a pain in ass to switch all over the time.
I still need windows for all the Graphic Design software, Adobe & Macromedia products. Linux has GIMP but it lacks many of the specialised features for designing for comercial printing such as CYMK colour mode.
have you tried out wine?, it is an application that allows you to run windows application on linux and as far as I know those product will run fine on wine (I could be wrong)
Linux is a different "animal" than windows. If you approach it like windows you will fail and be disappointed. What makes Linux especially attractive is it's tradition of respecting user's privacy and it's resilentcy against computer virus's. Furthermore what's really exciting about Linux is that it just keeps getting better. While M$ and Windows continues to try to take users in a direction they don't want to go. Hence Windows keeps getting shittier with each new version.
wow, PClinuxOS is amazing!! i think i'm selling my mac and buying one.
hehe, I actually have a friend named Linux, and we always made reference to the computer/software as an insult. but now, as I watch this amazing video, I'm thinking it was more of a compliment than anything else.
You can run some games on linux, like TeamFortress2, WoW, Starcraft, Warcraft.
Linux is easy to learn to use. It has a learning curve, but once you've used it after 2-3 days it grows on you. I have Linux on my laptop, and Windows on my gaming rig. I wish more new games where made to play on linux.
actually, i think there are patches for every game out there to work on linux, except online, but if you usually play offline (like me; dial-up) linux works perfectly. i have XP running on my gaming rig, but i might buy a second drive for linux =/
Hey there guys. I'm a Mac guy who uses Mac my whole life and everyday and I have to admit, I've worked with Linux before at friend's houses and stuff and I like it. I don't like the guys who go around and find videos if they don't like Linux just bash it. Linux is good!
Linux is awesome I have it and enjoy it very much.. People who speak against it do so out of ignorance.. I am 100% pro linux. I like it's philosophy, helpfulness, and freeness.. Windows and Mac to me is nothing but corporate america and all it's greed.
OK.....but can you motivate your reaction. Or are you one of those persons who thinks he knows a lot about computers but doesn't understand shit. Looking at your reaction i think this is the case.......said for you......hang in there one day you will understand.
You dont usualy "Buy" linux, as most of linux distributions are free. linux is like any other computer operating system with its differences in hardware support and software. Main difference to other popular operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X) Linux's code is open and anyone can try and code the operating system to look and feel what you see as your "perfect operating system".
As people are different they have created their own linux versions (Distributions or Distros they are called), most major being PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Linux Mint, Fedora etc etc, there is almost countless amount of distros. What linux is good for is basicly for everyday computer use: browsing net, chatting to people, uploading photos and sending them to your friends over email etc etc... But this usualy is based on what kind of distro we are talking about.
If you playing games and are new to Linux, i suggest you stick with windows, as you will find your priductivity drops and some periphers not working, but if you advanced windwos user or programer than windows is definitley for you ! i love it, it is fast stabe and realible
dell has started to offer computers with linux, but like has been posted before, you dont buy the OS you can buy a CD to install the OS for like 2 bucks i think
Can some one help me? i have a extra computer that has a corrupted hard drive and i cant do a system restore is there a way i can install PCLinuxOS on it.
- (ones properly configured) More stable than Windows.
Its just unbelievable that Linux (a free operating system) takes advantage of the 3d Capabilitys of your hardware. While windows doesn't! The only thing wy linux isn't so big as it should be is due to the bad hardware suppport by the hardware builders.
Don't get me wrong windows isn't that stupid and they brought the computer to the peoples homes. But its to bad that a company with unlimited money can't produce anything better (like vista).
But Mac is like. Driving a expensive car. You have to pay allot for what you get. Linux is FREE. If you got money enough no problem! Else your stuck with the smart kid. In a way i think the GUI of MAC is the future. (ps the newest mac is based on linux/unix!)
your wrong mac and windows is the future of shit linux is free and can be configured to mimic any operating system available not to mention its virtualy virus free its like perfect in every way
eventualy linux will render the big software corporations like mac and microsoft obsolete and technology will begin to adavance beyond the narrow consumerist way of life. this is why i laugh at robot cars on mars we should already have condos there
I agree.....its beryl doing the job. But pclinux is the only distro for me that got it working right away without any drivers hassle work. Debian is a good distro.....but more for the very linux techies. thanks for you reaction
Ubuntu 7.10 comes with Compiz Fusion (Beryl + Compiz) preinstalled, and can be enabled in the Appearance item. Although the default Ubuntu is GNOME, you can get Kubuntu anyways.
Anyone know the odds of PCLinuxOS running on a Windows Millenium Pentium...I think it's a Pentium II Pavilion N5750 with an 8 GB hard drive and a slight chance of booting from a live CD through an external drive since the internal one is dead? My idea is if i can get this to work, I can wipe out Windows and use the system as a Linux system because under Windows it's just not usable at all.
Well, you should see if a) The BIOS will allow you to boot from the port through which the external CD drive is mounted (I imagine a serial port...) and b) Try something lighter than PCLinuxOS, like Xubuntu, because KDE might be a tad heavy. Xubuntu has the same effects, by the way.
I think it's Mandrake.. whatever it is.. it works for me! Excellent install onto Windows partition. Running it on desktop and little Acer Aspire 3690. only thing not recognized was a multicard reader on laptop.. but there must be a fix someplace for that..
I've been using Linux exclusively for 4.5 years and so has my wife. I switched to PCLinuxOS a couple of weeks ago and WOW! It's very nice. The Beryl Cube eye candy is fun, but I don't use it. PCLinuxOS is plenty nice enough without the 3D. It's fast and very stable. I just can't see anyone running Windows when this is available. The large repository of Free Open Source Software is very nice too and Synaptic installs and removes it quickly and reliably.

To me PcLinuxOS is the best along with Mepis Linux & the best looking Distro is Dream Linux
ghostaliaz 3 years ago
No offense but pc linux is a joke. Ubuntu, fedora and suse is the best of them all.

(cost isn't really a factor)
prestonposthuma 3 years ago
Mac pcs is always better than any thing else.. go get Macbook.. if this "tricks" you know includes the open source programming, get Linux.. Ubuntu or Mandriva will be just great.
if you aren't planning for programming you may keep your lovely Leopard..

Just download it - it's community developed. They are happy to accept donations. My company runs PCLinuxOS - we send them $100 every year.

this is just like how i have a finger scanner on my hp pavillion dv600 it is realy cool wen u buy it and use it all the time but then it just gets annoying
macka7887 3 years ago
Most of the time i have them switch off due to slowing down. But this is more a example that you don't need windows to have cool effects.

lol nerds fightin about what PC is better
who the fuck cares.
I use Windows, i dont give a shit whats better, windows is more compatible with games and nah linux AINT good just coz of those effects you dumb ass
who the fuck still argues about this? its so friggin nerdy and pointless as well as time robbing.
stupid kiddos^^
NOSFERATUalu 3 years ago

PCLinuxOS makes it easier for people coming directly from Windows, I like it better for what I use it for.

Hence Windows keeps getting shittier with each new version.

wow, PClinuxOS is amazing!! i think i'm selling my mac and buying one.
hehe, I actually have a friend named Linux, and we always made reference to the computer/software as an insult. but now, as I watch this amazing video, I'm thinking it was more of a compliment than anything else.
karlaordonez 4 years ago
Er, you can just put linux on the computer you have now for free. Or you can make half of your computer run the mac OS and the other half run linux.

Does this Linux easy to use? I mean does it hard to install games?
edyx1337 4 years ago
You can run some games on linux, like TeamFortress2, WoW, Starcraft, Warcraft.
Linux is easy to learn to use. It has a learning curve, but once you've used it after 2-3 days it grows on you. I have Linux on my laptop, and Windows on my gaming rig. I wish more new games where made to play on linux.
Ralphnaderchop 4 years ago 2
actually, i think there are patches for every game out there to work on linux, except online, but if you usually play offline (like me; dial-up) linux works perfectly. i have XP running on my gaming rig, but i might buy a second drive for linux =/

yeah, like i said, if you're playing online, get XP but if you play offline, linux kills.

Windows and Mac to me is nothing but corporate america and all it's greed.

where can u even buy linux from. and what are they good for
brandonreyes 4 years ago
You dont usualy "Buy" linux, as most of linux distributions are free. linux is like any other computer operating system with its differences in hardware support and software. Main difference to other popular operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X) Linux's code is open and anyone can try and code the operating system to look and feel what you see as your "perfect operating system".
Kek7Go 4 years ago
As people are different they have created their own linux versions (Distributions or Distros they are called), most major being PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Linux Mint, Fedora etc etc, there is almost countless amount of distros. What linux is good for is basicly for everyday computer use: browsing net, chatting to people, uploading photos and sending them to your friends over email etc etc... But this usualy is based on what kind of distro we are talking about.
Kek7Go 4 years ago
If you playing games and are new to Linux, i suggest you stick with windows, as you will find your priductivity drops and some periphers not working, but if you advanced windwos user or programer than windows is definitley for you ! i love it, it is fast stabe and realible

dude i don't get why people think Linux is so cool.
CJNBrothers 4 years ago
Because:
- Linux is free
- (ones properly configured) More stable than Windows.
Its just unbelievable that Linux (a free operating system) takes advantage of the 3d Capabilitys of your hardware. While windows doesn't! The only thing wy linux isn't so big as it should be is due to the bad hardware suppport by the hardware builders.
legerstee1 4 years ago
Don't get me wrong windows isn't that stupid and they brought the computer to the peoples homes. But its to bad that a company with unlimited money can't produce anything better (like vista).

Guys I think that Linux is still a kid but you know with smart intelligent parents who will make Linux a Success one day but not quiet yet!
Then there's Windows with a bunch of things wrong with it its full of viruses & what not, its like a useless junkie that keeps on asking for money!
And so the world is left with Mac who is successful friendly intelligent & full of features.
orky87 4 years ago
But Mac is like. Driving a expensive car. You have to pay allot for what you get. Linux is FREE. If you got money enough no problem! Else your stuck with the smart kid. In a way i think the GUI of MAC is the future. (ps the newest mac is based on linux/unix!)
legerstee1 4 years ago
I agree with you 100%,
You know for a Professional Linux is not quiet there yet we all can admit that, I presume a professional person would be able to afford a Mac.
Me I'm using UbuntuStudio, so I've got nothing against Linux at all.
Its like you said:
"-i think the GUI of MAC is the future-"
It is you better believe it...
orky87 4 years ago
your wrong mac and windows is the future of shit linux is free and can be configured to mimic any operating system available not to mention its virtualy virus free its like perfect in every way
eventualy linux will render the big software corporations like mac and microsoft obsolete and technology will begin to adavance beyond the narrow consumerist way of life. this is why i laugh at robot cars on mars we should already have condos there

these are not the "WOW" effects of PCLinuxOS, These are the wow effects of Beryl.
Beryl runns on ALL linux distros. Sabyon for instance uses they quite well.. i prefer them on debian myself

Although the default Ubuntu is GNOME, you can get Kubuntu anyways.

zaraz po instalacji zrobiłem upgrade całego systemu pclinuxos 2007 potem zainstalowałem sterowniki z synaptic'a ATI i okazało sie że... compiz- fusion smiga ,kostka itp nic dodać nic ująć :)

Anyone know the odds of PCLinuxOS running on a Windows Millenium Pentium...I think it's a Pentium II Pavilion N5750 with an 8 GB hard drive and a slight chance of booting from a live CD through an external drive since the internal one is dead? My idea is if i can get this to work, I can wipe out Windows and use the system as a Linux system because under Windows it's just not usable at all.
rml695 4 years ago
Uh...
