  • That is St. Peppers from genesis (and me i am a beatles fan)!!

  • i love phil Collins and 80's genesis but THIS ERA WAS A FUCKING MASTERPIECE OF AMAZINGLY CRAFTED AUDIO-VISUAL ART!!!

  • love the end of this one

  • Part III is easily, my YouTube go to.

  • There will never be another Genesis! Long live the Kings of Prog!

  • David Bowie and Peter Gabriel were both into Theater and mime!!

  • Steve Hackett a very underrated part of the Genesis sound!!!

  • Peter is a great front man and Phil is a great drummer!!!

  • MICHAEL TSARION IS THE WORLDS PREMIER CONSPIRACY RESEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE, LEO ZAGAMI, JORDAN MAXWELL AND ALEXANDRE DUMAS PERE ARE HIGHLY INFORMATIVE AS WELL. P.S. MELTING EUPHORIA IS SIMILAR TO OZRIC TENTACLES AND GONG.

  • @uriahheep108

Also with an other name, i know you are stupid, no, complet stupid.

  • @btom22259 Apparently, the poor troll missed "The Magician's Birthday," lol.

  • It must be from 1973

  • Great!

  • like the bass in the background..

  • Excellent capture of a moment in time past. I do find the Seconds Out version to be much more moving; epic. But wow! To have been there at one of these early concerts......

  • I think it must be the 9/8 rhythm that separates the musical "men" from the boys. I have to concentrate hard as hell to be able to reproduce it. Early Genesis never ceases to amaze me with their passion and professionalism.

  • @rherbert57 The 9/8 rhythm itself is pretty simple, with "up" notes (sorry, I'm no theory wiz) consistently on the 3rd, 5th and 9th beats in the guitar/bass. The LIKELY source of your confusion is the solo, which is in 4/4 for the most part (notice how each phrase gets more and more out of sync with Steve/Mike).

The other most likely source of confusion is Phil's drumming. I actually find the drum bits in 'Apocalypse' more memorable and interesting than Tony's solo on repeated listening.

  • @ColonelFatso Thanks! Obviously, there's a difference between knowing what you like, and KNOWING what you like (not necessarily in your wardrobe ;-). I'll listen to Supper's Ready with different ears next time.

  • A nice Tony-Hammond-variation at 2:06 :-) Great song, great version!!

  • Hello at all. Please tell me who can By it this Title? Thanks a lot. Greetings

  • Now, I'm back again...

  • Its a symphony!

  • Am I the only person who fell asleep at a live concert watching this? Out of the many great bands I have seen, this is the only one to have tickled my sleepy senses

  • @Parityview

Was that you in the 1976 concert movie?

  • @frinkmhey

No, I saw them a few years earlier in and it didn't look at all like the Movie.

  • nine times out of ten the rest of the band never knew what costume PG was coming out onto the stage with next !! This added to his departure from the band .. great shame ! Marvellous era .. lets have a prog rock revival !! About time !!

  • Yea Peter Gabriel era Genesis. there was more I wanted to say..but why spoil this stuff with words?

  • Out of 449 people, 2 are idiots. Got to go back stage with them on the Duke tour at the FOX.

  • k in creible video...jamas soñe con ver algo asi......amazing! increiblee........gracias ...thanks.....merci....dankesen.......etc etc

  • This is the supper of the mighty One!

  • Sad thing is there is a whole generation of people who only know Phil Collins from shitty Disney soundtracks and lame pop shit post 1990. His drumming here is fucking magnificent and effortless, on a very complicated piece to keep time to. One of the most underrated drummers of the 70's by far.

  • @badrogue66

Me: " Hey, heard of Phil Collins"?

My generation: " The guy who made the lovely song Another day in paradise"?

Me: "Brb, just going to jump in front of that bus"

I'm 16 years old, and I'm one of the few of my generation who appreciate good music as this!

  • Debe ser uno de los temas mas sublimes del Rock Progresivo, algo parecido a una opera, gracias Genesis por haber dejado esto para la historia de la musica !

  • Drugs are bad, but this is a drug!

  • I allways wonder how this young guys could allready made this great music....

  • @btom22259 MICHAEL SCOTT IS THE AUTHOR OF THE NICOLAS FLAMEL SERIES(THE ALCHEMYST, THE MAGICIAN, THE SORCERESS, THE NECROMANCER, THE WARLOCK). P.S. MELTING EUPHORIA IS SIMILAR TO OZRIC TENTACLES ND GONG.

  • @augustmaquet

why you tell everybody your stupid things?

  • I grew u pwit hFoxtrot ,I was 15 then.

Funny to realize Kadhafi and other arabic leaders correspond so well to the text of this song...read it here above by RAELSALMACIS!

We are revolutions ahead in the West...so it seems

  • ....AAAANNND...THAT's how it's done..

  • Can't you feel our souls ignite? Shedding ever, changing colours in the darkness of the fading night Like the river joins the ocean as a germ in the seeds grows We've finally been freed to get back home. There's an angel standing in the sun and He's crying in a loud voice: "This is the supper of the Mighty One! Lord of Lords King of Kings Has returned to led his children home, to take them to the new Jerusalem" What a final climax...Magnificient, powerful, moving and ethereal
  • @Raelsalmacis MICHAEL TSARION IS THE WORLDS PREMIER CONSPIRACY REASEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE, LEO ZAGAMI, JORDAN MAXWELL AND ALEXANDRE DUMAS PERE ARE HIGHLY INFORMATIVE AS WELL. P.S. MELTING EUPHORIA IS SIMILAR TO OZRIC TENTACLES AND GONG.

  • @Raelsalmacis

    It's absolutely brilliant! BRILLIANT !!!

  • :35 the keyboard player starts messing up the solo, the drummer looks at him on his first mess-up.... :o

  • I don't know how many tmes that i have heard this song over the course of my 51 years but I still get goose bumps listening to this, especially A 9/8.Wow..thx for the post & oh, G*d bless youtube!

  • What band do you know that writes their music in separate time signatures (Apocalypse in 9/8, or Turn it On Again, which was in 13/4) and does it so well...at such an early age? Only Genesis! Oh, how I wish the Gabriel era was still around today. We need someone to wake us up from the nightmares of Justin Bieber and Disney...

  • @Saiku1405 Hey! My band wrote a song in 21/8. And we're teens. FOR THE RECORD. :P

  • @MasterYumyums Awesome! But I was making a point there. :P

  • @Saiku1405 I know, I'm pulling your chain.

  • Chuck Norris and God shal forever be pondering the truth regarding existence of Genesis :)

  • In blood ,he's writing the lyrics of a brand new tune.

  • THE live stage version is better, this is a made for TV version. But it's still Genesis at their best! And yes the Apocalypse section is in 9/8, I dare anyone to play that!

  • @bobchat1 ALEXANDRE UDMAS WROTE OVER 400 HISTORICAL NOVELS EXPOSING WORLD TYRANNY(ROMAN CATHOLIC EMPIRE). ALEXANDRE DUMAS PERE WAS BORN NEAR PARIS IN 1802 AND 'COINCIDENTALLY' IN 1902 THE SOCIETY OF GESU(JESUITS) WERE EXPELLED FROM 82 COUNTRIES AND THEIR POPE IS ARAMIS AND HE IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO(GENERAL OF THE JESUITS)

  • @countdumas Dear God. YOU again!!!

  • Come on Steve, stand up like a man, your name ain't B.B. King. XD

  • @Freezaen He still plays the guitar while seated as of 2011 :)

  • @SPeacock I seen him stand. ;)

  • @SPeacock

Yep, I had the pleasure of watching SH on tour with his brother (playing flute) in profound Portugal (near Serra da Estrela) in 2009. There should be videos around (under GAR 2010, Gouveia Art Rock - Prog Festival).

I spoke briefly to him after concert while asking for an autograph... He's a legend, like every other member of this band. ;)

  • >> + > + >>> +/ 9/8 truly epic

  • I keep thinking...........man, these guys are only like 22 and 23 years old when they did this. Amazing!

  • Genesis was the most magnificent band of the 20th century, out of many. We got to witness classical music. Enjoy it. I'm 51. My kids and grandkids weren't so lucky. So it goes.

  • @racookster Great holistic bands are---Melting Euphoria, Ozric Tentacles, Gong, Mother Gong, Acid Mother's Gong, Magma, Aphrodities Child, Jade Warrior, Steve Tibbetts, Patrick Bernard, Lost at Last, Larry Coryell, Shakti, Oregon, Kazumi Watanabe, Toninho Horta, Egberto Gismonti, Eat Static, System 7, Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance, Magma, Sphongle, Bill Laswell, Stomu Yamashta, Here and Now band, Steve Hillage.

  • what i love the most about the Apocalypse part is that it's totally unique; where have you heard any of that before? Classical? Nah. Rock? Nah. Jazz? Nah. Blues? Nah. Pop? Nah. It is truly and in every way progressive.

  • probably the most complicated piece of music ever written, if not the greatest aswell.

  • Today they're old timers, but i respect them for what they made as efforts, and for laughters ! For Pete; it must not be as fun today; but he has been honored for his African supports to Mendela and political prisonners in the eighties !

  • omg, THE BEST!!!!

  • well they are abt 1000th of the Hooters, but nice try

  • everything in here is so wonderful and beautiful... i'd be so glad if they would be together all the time :(

  • omg, what a classic...the mightiest of all prog-rock epics........the gates of delirium by YES is next but SR rocks them all!

  • i cant understand how gabriel changes his clothes that fast

  • Genesis Six Hours Live 1972-1980 2DVD set, Genesis, The Lamb Live at the Shrine 1975 3-disc 2CD/DVD set, Genesis Live in Montreal 1974 2CD set, Genesis Live in Zurich 1977 2CD set available at Tommygun Video. Link and details on our channel

  • saw them do this live, but with phil on vocals. awesome either way, but different...

  • If I ever had to teach a class on Progressive Rock this would be the first thing I would play especially this part of the song in 9/8. I would be like "this is prog rock."

  • I saw this live - we were ten feet from the stage at the Cleethorpes Winter Gardens. The intense build up and sudden shock of the climax with Gabriel appearing in the red box headgear sent a shiver down my back I can remember to this day. Electrifying performance.

  • What a nice performance of this song, thank you so much for sharing :)

  • this will be unreached for ALL TIMES !!

  • @liebche This song is timeless - and by that definition, the band are immortal :)

  • @liebche MICHAEL TSARION IS THE WORLDS PREMIER CONSPIRACY RESEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE, LEO ZAGAMI, JORDAN MAXWELL AND ALEXANDRE DUMAS PERE ARE HIGHLY INFORMATIVE AS WELL. P.S. MELTING EUPHORIA IS SIMILAR TO OZRIC TENTACLES AND GONG.

  • thi is glorious!!! unbeleivable, this sounds better than the record version from foxtrot, wow wow wow wow

  • ARAMIS IS THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO(GENERAL OF THE JESUITS)

  • I CAN'T LIKE THIS ENUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • one of the best musical performances ever. This track is a classic

  • The musical genius of all the members of this band is unsurpassed then and now !

  • Who is that long haired drummer? I bet he never made anything of himself.

  • @Ron502008 thats phil collins..... he's doing great

  • @ErnieAndMaraboo

I think Ron502008's comment was tongue in cheek !

  • fantastic stuff ..thing about genesis during this era is that this unit of guys was so tight and dedicated... it wasnt about individuals and they were all obssesed with the music.. thats what makes it so rich and as far as im concerned it stays the test of time musically.. god knows what people will make of this in a hundred years time.

  • Do it again Genesis. And this time with Gabriel as the vocalist and the dresses. He probably can still sing this song in the original key

  • Incredible vintage Genesis!

  • Best piece of music ever written IMO.

  • Floyd, early genesis and king crimson are what it's all about.

  • @767fife Yeah, there great as well, a plague of lighthouse keepers :)

  • please no one compares to banks

  • Superb! Pure and simple. I won't get into Peter vs. Phil debate; Yes vs. Genesis, Wakeman vs. Banks, etc. petty squabbles. When I watch and listen to vintage Genesis, that's all I care about. And this is as good as it gets.

  • ....a masterpiece! enough said!!!!

  • wonderful video, a jewel indeed

  • I can see why Peter Gabriel has no desire to re-unite with the boys. I had a period of my life where I did things I'm not proud of, and would have no desire to relive it in any way shape or form. As a man in his 60's now, PG wants to forget how he acted musically in his 20's.

  • @mikelmart Gabriel aspired to and achieved the epitome of progressive rock's mission in this song. So many achievements in performance, music and word here...

  • Have the feeling they all wanted to lose the mad hair and be taken seriiously. Quuite embarassing really all this. Mind you I was there at a few of their 1st few gigs looking like a girl as well. Nodding my head in agreement. I'm as bald as Gabriel now. Phil did well didn't he?

  • @Rikk303 If his hair is all you can judge this by, then close your eyes and listen again...

  • i have to agree with sphericalpyramid that song is awesome. i cry every time i hear it

  • Bravo...! Masterpiece by Genesis. Perfectly elaborated and the way the instruments are mixed among Banks, Rutherford, Collins, Hackett and Gabriel. My son is 5 years old and simple he loves it. Timeless piece of music. Hard to believe that some day a musical group was able to write a song like this. For sure my favorite. Thanks genesis for this song.

  • Steve Hackett is probably my favourite guitarist ever! The only word I can use to describe his work in genesis is 'subtle'. He had/has and amazing understanding of ensemble playing, not always showing off and playing over everyone else like most guitarists, but just adding perfect texture and atmosphere to the music. Of course, that also means that when he does let rip-he blows your socks off! Lot of love for Genesis, for me, this line up = best band ever!

  • @genesisrock43 Well said about Steve Hackett. What a musical genius!

  • @genesisrock43 MICHAEL TSARION IS THE WORLDS PREMIER CONSPIRACY RESEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE, JORDAN MAXWELL, LEO ZAGAMI AND ALEXANDRE DUMAS PERE ARE HIGHLOY INFORMATIVE AS WELL. P.S. MELTING EUPHORIA IS SIMILAR TO OZRIC TENTACLES AND GONG.

  • Ill bet Gabriel still were able to reach these high notes.

  • There's an angel standing in the sun, and he's crying with a loud voice,

"This is the supper of the mighty One",

    The Lord of Lords,

    King of Kings,

Has returned to lead His children home,

To take them to the new Jerusalem!!!

This bit breaks my heart with beauty!

  • @ghirotti77 Despite all the Christian rock out there, this is progressive rock, probably based on visions gained through psychedlics, but it expresses the aspiration to mystical union with God better than any other song.

  • @ghirotti77

Has made me weep....deeply....numerous times. =) A thing of beauty indeed!

  • Love than kind of montage! The director who did it is a genius.

  • The timing in this movement of the song and with Yes and Floyd, etc., they should be called movements as it's the closest we have to the so called 'classical' compositions. The timing reminds me very much of Peter's work in the "Last Temptation of Christ", the one percussive song that is one pure Canon thru and thru and builds to an unbelievable pace and emotional state.

  • Perfect, this is the best performance of the story of progressive music, that live track is sublime, perfect..

  • This is the best prog song ever written! Come to think of it, its the best song ever written! Come to think of it; I LOVE IT! every single moment of this song represents music at its finest, with everything leading brilliantly up to As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs. Every time i hear the phrase "Take them to the New Jerusalem" i get goosebumps all over. Same goes for Apocalypse, 666, Willow Farm, GESM... Everything, basically. this is perfect

  • Genesis and The Who for me are the two most inspiring British groups. They were both keen to develop their music into more than just a 'single' or an 'album'. The Who had A Quick One and then Tommy, Genesis definitely followed them with songs like this. Absolutely fantastic! Love it :-) What an incredible vision to create such masterpieces those two groups (in particular) had. Both groups for me, had that indefinable chemistry between their members that created utter sonic magic.

  • This is THE best instrumental section in the history or rock. Tony Banks understand that it's not just about rushing your fingers around in empty virtuoso; what he plays in the Apocalypse in 9/8 section paints an absolutely perfect image of the the theme of the song. Supper's Ready is the song that sets Genesis apart from every other prog rock band. No one else--Yes, ELP, no one--comes close to this song.

  • What a performance - like an Opera, Peter, we salute you.

  • Damn, i pressed "like" so hard i completely destroyed my mouse!

  • Supper's Ready by Genesis always puts me in mind of my own mortality, and more than any other piece of music, it is where my heart will always rest.

  • This is nothing else but WONDERFUL !!!

...and I believe that this level wiil never be reached again...

  • I only wish i was on Acid the first time I saw That !. Fantastic!!!!!!!!! I was shot into deep space never to return ~~~~~~~

  • over and over

  • Wow.......

Can we play it again? ;-)

  • in lee of their later works one has to wonder if these these lads , this group of individuals , knew what they were up to at the time .

  • Hands down, my top 3 are:

    1. Banks

    2. Emerson

    3. Wakeman

You really just can't compare the three, totally different and good in their own way, but I love Banks' simplistic approach.

  • @plungerdrum. Type in Youtube Happy the Man Caroussel and listen to Kit Watkins. Check out the whole album and enjoy.

  • @plungerdrum banks i think is technically not far off from Wakeman at all. He just doesn't take up as much space as Wakeman. And he's certainly just as creative and imo, a more brilliant composer. My personal favorite prog keyboardist ever.

  • @codebabe I definitely agree.

  • less proggy name as well

  • true

  • @plungerdrum and rick wright,, ?

  • That blew my mind... where can I get the ringtone?

  • lol

  • because 22 minutes is the usual response time for a phone call

  • Oh this is too much man !

    Real Prog Rock !

    Around 2.02 , just too much ....

  • Hands down best prog epic EVER!

  • It's Christmas Eve and I must change my mood B4 I see the fam. How can I not get inspiried to do so with Peter and Part III. Love the suit!!

  • Wakeman and Emerson were fantastic, but for my money Banks was better. They all had great widdly widdly solo moments, but Banks was far more tasteful. He didn't need keyboard pyrotechnics or to stab his Hammond with knives to get his point across.

Interesting factoid: his solo in 'Apocalypse in 9/8' was written to parody Emerson

  • I agree that Banks is under-rated, but I'd still pick Wakeman on synth, Emerson on organ, and Nicky Hopkins on piano.

    I'm just sayin.'

  • so how would you rate Banks with rick wright?

  • It would be easy to say Banks was better, but I always thought Rick Wright hid his light under a bushel. There's no question he was a vital part of Floyd but it seemed to me that he was content in not taking centre stage much - maybe it was just because the music didn't call for it. Having played keyboards in a Floyd and currently a Genesis tribute group, the Genesis stuff is a lot harder.

  • I wholeheartedly agree... I think Banks created far more interesting textures than either of those and, his performance here notwithstanding, was always a very precise player. Plus he writes all those wonderfully meandering chord progressions...

Where did you get the info about the Emerson parody? Not doubting your sources, just asking...

  • I've seen an interview with Tony Banks where he said it - I'd have to have a trawl through Youtube to find it. I checked out Wikipedia where it's quoted but there's no source.

  • how do you know that?

  • 'Can't you feel our souls ignite?'

Genius, just fucking genius. Glam-rock and progressive era at it's best. We'll never see a period of music like this again.

    Rock on Genesis.
