I remember this very, very clearly (even the commentary). Beardsmore was a useful player and part of the original "Fergie's Fledglings" (along with Lee Martin, Mark Robins and others) but he was far too lightweight for the top flight -- about 5'6" and 9 stone.
Also, unless I'm mistaken, United had to play another game the following day, away to Middlesborough, and lost 0-1. People moan about television interfering with schedules but teams don't have to play on consecutive days any more.

this is wot pisses me off when ppl say utd fans that have been goin for many yrs are 'golry-hunters'. we celebrate beatin the mickeys in the 80s like a massive acheivment, more pride than any derby victory can bring. kinda like how derby or wolves would celebrate beating utd now, & they call us 'glory-hunters' cuz utd are now a gr8 team, but i remember when we wer shite & times like this, still loved united more than ever

I lived through that 26 year gap without a title, and in 23 of those years United were the best supported team in the country. Even in those days when the mickeys had a bandwagon to jump on, they were never as popular as us and that's what gets up their noses (apart from all the other stuff they put up there)

I remember watching this game on TV, i couldnt believe it, i was a liverpool fan then, i was 13. This was 1 of the turning points to Liverpool's season losing the title to Arsenal.

Bearing in mind this was New Year's Day, the next league game they lost was the Arsenal on in May, if I remember correctly.
Remember this game well tho. Was a Liverpool fan at the time... I was only 10. Very depressing.

I remember going to this match on New Year's Day 1989.The following day we went to watch United at Middlesboro and they got beat 1-0.Peter Davenport scoring his first goal after leaving United.What an up and down 24 hours that was.I still have the Liverpool on vhs.

we beat lfc a lot in the 80`s its just they swept all before them trophy wise.

i'm a kopite but i think we only beat your lot twice between 1979 & 1988, & that was a league game at old trafford in season 1981/82 & a milk cup tie at anfield in our double winning season. you've always been a bit of a bogey side for us. we swept all before us in the 80's but just couldnt beat man. utd........home or away.

yer spot on fella, jan molby had replaced john aldridge as penalty taker for the 1988/89 season after his miss in the cup final the previous season against wimbledon. it was a freezing september day in 1988 but i remember it was pretty sunny too. just for the record, i was 8 years old in 1988 aswell mate. god, i feel old ha ha.

I know the feeling mate. Yeah, I do remember it being sunny as well. Funny how certain games stick in the mind eh? Wasn't it an early kick off that day as well? I thought it was (which was strange in those days because Football was actually played at 3.00pm). I could be wrong, but I seem to remember it being a dinner time game. Now if I am right about that then I really do need to get out more! haha

i was in the stetford end beardsmore played a blinder probably his best game for utd. if memory serves me right we played boro away next game played shite and davenport scored his first goal for boro and beat us 1-0.best bit about the game was a red up the floodlight pylon with an ape mask on being chased by the bizzies. happy days thanks for the memories.

I agree with you mate, those were the great days of English football,Liverpool v Man utd games were always classics no matter who won. Atmosphere was also electric something that is sadly lacking in todays games. Fooball was of a higher calibre, todays stuff is predictable and bland, Wigan v Bolton forget it.

spot on mate. i've jus recently bought sum video's from this era off ebay, 'race 4 the title 88/89 & 89/90. i was only 9 yrs old in 1989 but this was the era that got me hooked on footy in the 1st place. i used 2 luv watching saint & greavsie, elton welsby & all that lot. the sky sports circus has helped the english game in many ways but there's bin a downside 2 it too. i'm a kopite by the way & my views hav got nothing 2 do with liverpool winning no title 4 18 yrs, ha ha.
