  • PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARK!

  • just short of 45.000 there on this day i was there 12 year old. liverpool had 6.000 . great atmosphere. thats when real fans went to the match. not like now snobby cunts.

  • Great game. Liverpool were the top team and United had loads of injuries and played the youngsters I remember thinking United would get hammered and was gutted when Barnes scored. A great atmosphere, contributed by 5000 Liverpool fans, the TV Technology of the day cant pick up the sheer atmosphere of being there..

  • @BertAtkin Well I was actually only talking about ITV and Brian Moore really. But I take your point, although I don't know where Ray Houghton, Jan Molby, Micky Quinn, Alvin Martin, Stan Collymore and Alvin Greene are mainstream media? The other three are more critical of Liverpool than most, to me anyway - because were always cocking it up since they left. At least in the league, anyway. Perhaps the BBC, or Coleman was what Moore was trying to balance? I dunno.

  • Ive trained with Russel Beardsmore :D

  • @AnfieldBob90

Not quite 96 though. Dukinfield FTW

  • Do I detect a biased towards Manchester United by Brian Moore???

  • @jazzman1892

Absolutely - he could hardly disguise his glee when utd scored their 3rd could he?

I always thought it was just my family who noticed these things!

Do ITV think everybody watching football supports Man Utd?

  • @DeathDwarf79 And my family always thought the other way. If you take the mainstream media now , Hanson,Lawrenson,Ray Houghton, Jan Molby, Micky Quinn, Alvin Martin, Stan Collymore, Jim Beglin, Alan Greene, all Liverpool fans or ex players.

  • As a Liverpool fan I find all this abuse very flattering.

Also, the reason Man U were so pleased to win that one game that season was because our team of that era played possibly the best FOOTBALL of any english club I've ever seen.

  • @DeathDwarf79

Yawn. Your team from the seventies would have beaten this shower of aging shite right off the pitch

  • @masstransit2

:) Why? That doesn't even make sense, without making it too difficult for you to understand, the average ages were always the same for Liverpool teams right through the whole era. "Shower of aging shite" eh? Ooh - scary...

  • @jazzman1892 Look at the 1985 fa Cup semi final at Goodison, as a United fan I thought he was biased towards Liverpool.

  • Man utd fans and players were, are, and will always be losers

  • @94Liverpoolfan

Im surprised you can read or write. Did you learn by reading The Sun newspaper ?

  • 19

  • You won 5 cups and you didn't steal any of them... Done. We won 3 and didn't kill anyone and also 19 Championships.

  • Dirty manc scum, fuck off, noone likes u, no matter how hard u try, u cant do better than us, 5 euroes and u got 2 timed by barca, half the players u have are diving wankers, u even have a ref working for u (Howard Webb) whho gave a should not have been a penalty earlier on this year because berba dived, your team is SHITE so what u won 19 leagues yeah half the players in this league are shit, we won it 5 times, get on our level u cunts

  • @MrScouser95

U mad ? You were ONCE great in Europe. Losing in the Europaintertotomickeymouse cup to some second rate Portuguese club that Platini would do well to be aware of hasn't exactly got all of Europe (well those not good enough for the ECL anyway) shaking like a shitting dog at the thought of playing the dippers

  • @masstransit2 if you've seen our signings you'll see that were gonna do a whole lot better this season you are just not aware of it because your a manc and you think that Young and Jones are gonna have the sun shining out of their arse i dont think so mate, this is where the real season begins

  • @MrScouser95

Ahhh the annual Aug/Sept "This is our year" false dawn. Remember having one in 89 after beating champions Arsenal 4-1 (how did they win that title? lawl) At least Hodgson gave you some variety last season by not getting your hopes up at all. Prediction thats dodgier than Gerrards thigh/groin/legs/brain.

Jones + Young approx 36m Carroll 35m Tell me what the better deal was

  • @masstransit2 Carroll because Jones and Young are shit and over rated simple as, and your a manc, haha explains everything....

  • @MrScouser95

Proved not to be the case these last two league games. How you get on against Stoke / Vintage Dalglish whining too

  • Dirty manc scum, fuck off, noone likes u, no matter how hard u try, u cant do better than us, 5 euroes and u got 2 timed by barca, half the players u have are diving wankers, u even have a ref working for u (Howard Webb) whho gave a should not have been a penalty earlier on this year because berba dived, your team is SHITE

  • @MrScouser95

As Peter Noone attended Stretford Grammar School, you might have got one thing right.

  • I love that Bearsmore's first goal cost Liverpool the league that year. 19-18. You'll never be the best again scousers. Know your place.

  • liverpool always the best team im england

  • @TheMikesterboy Not any more....19/18.

  • @Sunstroker Dalglish is back though, things will change ... also we have 5 champions leagues compared to your minor 3, so technically were one better :)

  • Comment removed

  • mcclairs goal is the father of berbatov's volley

  • Like yesterday, one of the greatest atmospheres ever. Robson was immense

  • Best goal of the match - clearly Barnes! YNWA

  • i remember this like it was yesterday,it was my first match at old trafford, and one that i will remember forever, classic!!!

  • The major highlight of a mediocre season.

  • i remember seeing this live. It was when they first started televising live matches on a sunday afternoon. ITV started the trend before SKY took over the world a year or 2 later.

  • Always nice to beat LFC

  • and giggsy was waiting just around the corner ;)

  • when fergie retires, united are bring back ron atkinson !.......hhaahhahaa !

  • liverpool for ever

  • Not a United or Liverpool fan, but erm... kisamakara...you DIDN'T win the League that year. Michael Thomas anyone?!

  • lol we still won the league that season while you guys were mid table. how things have reversed, ironic.

  • @kisamakara You dont even know when your team won the league... U r a laughing stock... Remember some1 named Michael Thomas that year..hehe

  • @RahishS lol masher i watched my team win it in style in 89/1990. my bad. yeah that michael thomas fluked it right at the death in 89 (we still won the fa cup, big trophy since no europe for anyone). dont try to tell me something i remember well. one error dosnt mean anything, clearly you are a genius who went to oxbridge and graduated in medicine or law. noob.

  • Those werre the days my friend, we took the stretford end...

  • Liverpool always had as many, if not more, out of town supporters than united.

  • i was in stretford end e stand..we werent taking off at all..we were shite this season...but i remember this game...ps the ticket used to cost £2 and you got loads of kids at OT..ps im from nottingham..so this bullshit that all united supporters are glory hunters is bollocks..we always had support from all around the Uk cause of our playing style and attitude

  • @fallenmorningstar99 Support from all around the country - except Manchester!

  • Soccer primitive pure state. It looks like a tennis match.

  • This is when Madchester was just taking off. Football was Football and the Pills were fucking amazing. Now it's all bollox. I pity the youth growing up these days

  • How much better was football then?

  • I was in the Stretford end paddock for this match. Excellent.

  • fuck off you scouse bastards they were the days i used to follow utd in those days wont go anymore

  • I loved the way Choccy used to always grab the ball out of the net after scoring to get the game restarted quicker ... !!

  • Fergie's original "Fledglings" !!! This match is where it all started !!! As Brian Moore said: it took us to the dizzy heights of "Sixth in the First Division !!!"

  • We got to third after winning 2-0 at Sheff Wed in Feb, and was being talked about in terms of a Double (fpr al of five minutes)

  • Fergie's original "Fledglings" !!! This match is where it all started !!!

  • Fergie's original "Fledglings"

  • @Torowe1 IM MAN U ,BORN &BRED , BUT YOU CANT BEAT MAN U LIVERPOOL GAME ,,IT IS ELECTRIC ,,liverpool had the 80's ,sooner they realize its over maybe they will finish 3rd , who no's ha ha

  • @THEredARMY1000 how many times liverpool won the treble ,, oh and dont come with the coca cola cup ,,aint hapnin

  • leighton was useless

  • atmosphere is fuckin electric. Liverpool and United have great atmosphere/ fan support. Arsenal may have moved to the Emirates but its still just like the Higbury Library. And Chelsea dont get me started...

  • This was really a shock result at the time Man utd were quite a poor team during this era and Liverpool were expected to sweep them aside in this game. I was a very happy Gooner after watching this game!

  • 1988/89 season.....was Arsenal the champion??? Was it the season when arsenal won the league in the last minute against livrpool???? (Thomas' goal???)

  • funny because thomas came to liverpool and scored an important goal for them as well

  • @pablotjob it sure was. i remember watching it as a teenager, and my joy at this 3-1 united win was matched only by watching Pool's world crumble. They've never recovered.

  • thats not true.Liverpool lost the league that year but won the league back in 89-90.they went into decline when Souness arrived in 91.Souness,great liverpool player, terrible manager.

  • I was the score board end when them cunts won

  • was this really the 1988/89 season?

  • Some bastards on here that bring down both clubs. Liverpool Red through and through. Those so-called 'supporters' who are free with the insults about the dead and dying of both clubs should wake up and smell the coffee.

  • In the 80's,United had a better head to head record against Liverpool while the scousers were the most dominant team that decade.

In the 2000's,Liverpool have a better head to head record than us while we are the most dominant team this decade.

    Interesting.

  • Typical united in the 80's beat Liverpool and lose to Middlesbrough in the next match i seem to remember. A Bit like Liverpool of today!

  • @CMEAGAIN how true is that.

  • I was in the Stret End-great memory

  • Some pricks on here from both sides!

  • munich 58 twats liverpool fc

  • Dont Lower Yourself To Mancs Level ;(

  • liverpool forever

  • love it love it. 19 years girls. tick tock!!!!!

  • rotb get a life scumbag with your self pitying club. forever in our shadow....

  • foever in our shadow?

hahaha, sad twat, u r in our shadow, u always have been u smallminded manc twats

  • thats right, the mickeys YOU MUNICH CUNT!!!

i was there that night, behind the goal barnes scored...where was you?

  • rotb

fancy sponsoring me in the Hillsborough triathlon?

    Football, Fencing & Squash

  • yes i would like very much so,will it be the MUNICH marathon and please can we fly there without crashing??

  • OHH! That was below the belt mate. :)

  • The Echo did a survey of 100 people as to whether fences should be brought back

4 said yes, 96 were dead against it

  • I remember this very, very clearly (even the commentary). Beardsmore was a useful player and part of the original "Fergie's Fledglings" (along with Lee Martin, Mark Robins and others) but he was far too lightweight for the top flight -- about 5'6" and 9 stone.

Also, unless I'm mistaken, United had to play another game the following day, away to Middlesborough, and lost 0-1. People moan about television interfering with schedules but teams don't have to play on consecutive days any more.

  • this is wot pisses me off when ppl say utd fans that have been goin for many yrs are 'golry-hunters'. we celebrate beatin the mickeys in the 80s like a massive acheivment, more pride than any derby victory can bring. kinda like how derby or wolves would celebrate beating utd now, & they call us 'glory-hunters' cuz utd are now a gr8 team, but i remember when we wer shite & times like this, still loved united more than ever

  • redarmyMUFC99

I lived through that 26 year gap without a title, and in 23 of those years United were the best supported team in the country. Even in those days when the mickeys had a bandwagon to jump on, they were never as popular as us and that's what gets up their noses (apart from all the other stuff they put up there)

  • haha ye i know, completely agree, same here

  • Maung Tin Htun

  • liverpool fan liverpool forever

  • Ralph Milne was a Dundee United star who lost his peak after leaving them and was a blast from the past for Man. United. In this clip, he looked a bit shaky and nervy as he was giving away the ball too often. I hope he is not a football analyst somewhere as there are heaps today !!

  • ha ralph milne, and mike hooper liverpool reserve goalkeeper, blasts from the past!

  • 3.15 to 3.25, 10 seconds of evidence for why Ralph Milne was Ferguson's worst ever signing!

  • even in their glory years, we beat them !

  • In a weird way, I kind of miss the scousers being good. 08/09 has brought back some of the old rivarly. Nothing better than beating a Liverpool team with some bite.

  • i wander how many of them old school united fans go to games now, now being priced out due to high prices

  • I remember watching this game on TV, i couldnt believe it, i was a liverpool fan then, i was 13. This was 1 of the turning points to Liverpool's season losing the title to Arsenal.

  • Yeah this was the turning point for Liverpool.

Bearing in mind this was New Year's Day, the next league game they lost was the Arsenal on in May, if I remember correctly.

Remember this game well tho. Was a Liverpool fan at the time... I was only 10. Very depressing.

  • hahahahahaha

since u were 10 liverpool have not won a title.....

  • Since I was 12 I didn't give a shit what Liverpool did as I did what all fans should do and support their local club.

  • brian moore commentary unbeatable, particularly compared to that andy gray cunt.

  • how do you know that, watch a lot of united games do we? we sing about you cos you are our biggest rivals, dont get me going on delusional, we hate you coz of the liberties you lot took in the 70's and 80's, oh yes and the success you had, as a club cant argue you are the most successful

  • I remember going to this match on New Year's Day 1989.The following day we went to watch United at Middlesboro and they got beat 1-0.Peter Davenport scoring his first goal after leaving United. What an up and down 24 hours that was.I still have the Liverpool on vhs.

  • I was there too. Sheer madness!

  • we will always be the biggest club in england, and you know it thats why you hate us

  • There is no way todays Man utd would beat that Liverpool team, never, never, neverrrrrrrrrrrrr, they were exceptional.

  • MY GOD! I'm amazed! a Video of United Beating scouse that hasn't been taken over by Scousers Today going on about a Meaningless Victory! 4(Points Ahead)-1(Game In Hand)

  • i'm sure you lot never celebrated meaningless wins against us then, when we were the best. what comes around goes around. 4-1 ha ha ha

  • no win against you lot is meaningless, you cock

  • Yeah what a moron! Everyone can clearly see 11 massive bellend's and they are all wearing grey

  • @stubrew1978 -lol, ye thats right, that Liverpool side was fullof 'bellends'. this was the best squad ever seen in this country. yu may have hated them but you cannot not rate them.at this time this wasa UYTD cup final game twice a year. yes its changed now but youll find real oads have respet for each others. u r a sad litle kid by the sound of you

  • look at those small shorts. you can see their cock

  • ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! go on ,go on,go on my son

  • does anyone have this full match on dvd/video?

  • I'm pleased someone's put this together. Sparky is one of my all-time favourite players - never mind United players. Massive talent. Astonishing close control (enough to control chest-high passes from Clayton Blackmore anyway). Loved the man. A red stalwart. Good luck Sparky - and thanks for the memories!

  • 3 goals in 9 mins i think

so giddy, i went to middlesboro the next day and they lost 1-0!!

  • Whatever happened to Russell Beardsmore?...

  • he's living outside bournemouth now, as a football coach.

  • The atmosphere is pretty shit these days except for big games & the semi against barcelona last year which was fucking rocking.Blame those scouse cunts for ruining it with all seaters

    CUNTS

  • lol true they are cunts those gay scouses but what are all seaters ? p.s man u fan ! glory for us never for them the scouse

  • I'm glad I get to share the Earth with people like you.

  • great match, especially cos my boyfriend was playin in it. thanks for posting it, id never seen it.

  • Glory glory Man Utd

    glory glory Man Utd

    glory glory Man Utd

US THE REDS MARCHING UP UP UP

    Respect from Napoli

  • jammy

  • Praise for Manchester United..the best team in English football..

  • @miebulu not in 1988 they wern't

  • @miebulu Never, unless it conquer more champs than the Liverpool ;)

  • It's hard to believe this is at Old Trafford. Check out that Atmosphere. This is before it became a trip to the theatre for tourists.

  • well said m8 av heard that old trafford used 2 have a great atmosphere now its just full of boring cunts

  • True

  • @Embryonicboy No stadium in the land had an atmos as intimidating as OT back then! Theatre of Tourists ... lol like it!

  • I have been looking for footage of this match for years!

    Thank you.

  • Yeah i was there too, i was in the North Stand near the Stretford End. Beat the SCUM 3-1! Oh what memories.

  • I was in the scoreboard end for this game when i was 9 years old, one of my favourite ever games at OT. The noise in the ground that afternoon was something else, those were the days!

  • your right there timmy,

if this liv team wouldn't of been banned from 86 to 90 they could've won the euro cup every year,

don't like sayin it but its true !!!

  • Maybe you should have thought about that when you killed 39 innocent people.

  • we beat lfc a lot in the 80`s its just they swept all before them trophy wise.

Thank god for the european ban cos they`d have 7 or 8 european cups by now and maybe we wouldn`t become successful because they imploded after the ban.not straight away but it was on the cards.

  • i'm a kopite but i think we only beat your lot twice between 1979 & 1988, & that was a league game at old trafford in season 1981/82 & a milk cup tie at anfield in our double winning season. you've always been a bit of a bogey side for us. we swept all before us in the 80's but just couldnt beat man. utd........home or away.

  • sorry, we beat you 3 times between 1979 & 1988. we beat you 1-0 at anfield in season 1988/89, 3 months before this defeat for us on new years day 1989......i took my anorak off there for a second boys and girls, ha ha. a shit record to have from our point of view.

  • Was that the game Jan Molby scored a penalty? Remember that game. Was only 8 years old at the time and I remember feeling absolutely devastated. If it is the game I'm thinking of, it was fookin freezing that day!

  • yer spot on fella, jan molby had replaced john aldridge as penalty taker for the 1988/89 season after his miss in the cup final the previous season against wimbledon. it was a freezing september day in 1988 but i remember it was pretty sunny too. just for the record, i was 8 years old in 1988 aswell mate. god, i feel old ha ha.

  • I know the feeling mate. Yeah, I do remember it being sunny as well. Funny how certain games stick in the mind eh? Wasn't it an early kick off that day as well? I thought it was (which was strange in those days because Football was actually played at 3.00pm). I could be wrong, but I seem to remember it being a dinner time game. Now if I am right about that then I really do need to get out more! haha

  • you myt b right mate. as far as i know, the only early kick offs in the league in them days were for Liverpool if they were at home the same day as the grand national. for the record, we played sheff. wed at home on grand national day that season.....i'll take my anorak off now......its friday night.....& i'm off out to get pissed. ha ha

  • i was in the stetford end beardsmore played a blinder probably his best game for utd. if memory serves me right we played boro away next game played shite and davenport scored his first goal for boro and beat us 1-0.best bit about the game was a red up the floodlight pylon with an ape mask on being chased by the bizzies. happy days thanks for the memories.

  • Fuckin tell me about it, Beardsmore was immense

My 5th Lpool v United game i think

  • we definitely played at ayresome park the next day, thank god someone remembers the lad in the mask climbing the floodlights, singing to him 'there's only one peter beardsley...',happy days!

  • ahh peter beardsley the only man alive that can lick his left ear!!!!

  • magic!! I WAS IN THE STRETFORD END PADDOCK!!

  • nice one mate, this is a great memory for me, glad you had a similar experience, i could watch this clip for hours! that third goal was soooo sweeet!

  • Agreed , I am 32 now and was on the Stretford end that night...Went to 1st game in 84 and not missed one for 14 seasons. but these old ones are the best, never be the same as it was .

  • that liverpool team allways got the better of us, so damn sweet to get the better of them for a change. back in the day when money didn't dominate the game, it went shit after cantona!

  • Yeah, will never be the same. but bein in the Nou Camp and Moscow was close! ....Blackburn away now is one of the only games that bring it back.

  • sweet jesus, i remember that game as if it was yesterday, i'm 34 now, i'd been playing football (jumpers for goalposts) had a roast dinner in the oven, stewing away with gravy and great roast potatoes, and a rare united win against a dominant liverpool side, fantastic stuff!

  • blimey, exactly as it was for me too.... same age as you, same sunday roast..... same joy to see United beat the then might Liverpool!

  • was 01/01/1989 chaps

  • Although on second thoughts it could be New Year's Day 1990...

  • It is in fact New Years Day 1989. I remember this game like yesterday. Still can't believe Ralph Milne was a Utd player, he was the Bellion of the 80's.

  • Thanks for this blast from the past mattyredman - I think this was either New Year's Eve 1990 or New Year's Day 1991 though...

  • i was 8 when this game was on and my neighbour was a liverpool fan when the game ended i knocked his door and roared with delight i woke up in the local hospital 2 days later!

  • i was at this game in the stretford groundside...happy days!

  • united is wearing adidas shirt

  • Those were the days, not like the dire atmosphere's Sky and the likes have invented today..

  • if english football was still like this I'd certainly still watch it. far cry from constant diving and soulless, atmosphereless stadiums

  • I agree with you mate, those were the great days of English football,Liverpool v Man utd games were always classics no matter who won. Atmosphere was also electric something that is sadly lacking in todays games. Fooball was of a higher calibre, todays stuff is predictable and bland, Wigan v Bolton forget it.

  • Health and safety took away our right to stand!

Money hungry businessmen consider our great clubs to be businesses which they can rape for money.

Gillett, Hicks, Glazor, Shinawtra (However you spell it.) All the same.

The government needs to do something.

I myself have boycotted all official LFC merchandise, but those in charge of this country need to do something!

  • spot on mate. i've jus recently bought sum video's from this era off ebay, 'race 4 the title 88/89 & 89/90. i was only 9 yrs old in 1989 but this was the era that got me hooked on footy in the 1st place. i used 2 luv watching saint & greavsie, elton welsby & all that lot. the sky sports circus has helped the english game in many ways but there's bin a downside 2 it too. i'm a kopite by the way & my views hav got nothing 2 do with liverpool winning no title 4 18 yrs, ha ha.

  • I was in stretty for this it was rockin. Buzzing then remember going upto boro next day or 2 and getting beat

  • new years day this was. went to this and the night b4 sharpe and beardsmore were in the same club as us

  • First United V Liverpool I can remember as a young'un

  • Liverpool challenging for the title? That is a looooooong time ago.

  • this was new years day 1989. just think, Liverpool's next defeat was the title decider at anfield against arsenal. hard to believe considering we were 19 pts behind Arsenal a month after this but with 5 games in hand. that would sound daft nowadays wouldnt it ha ha.
