The audio sounds sped up. Sort of Chipmunk-y. Emphasizes the affectation in her pronunciation at this stage of her career (I'll pass out buddons..., Budeeful Peepole...)
When I first heard Melanie sing beautiful people, I wondered how it was that she held back those tears. I don't have the technical terms to describe what she is doing with her voice, but this I can say - she is real, she sings with her heart, expressing and empathising with the pain inflicted on the needy, after repeated attempts to call out with grief, tough and stern, but eventually gives way once again to the soft touch that beautiful people (that's us) so desperately need.
Stevie and Melanie are two completely different artists who happen to, kind of, have the same vibrato in their voices. It's quite amazing how Melanie's voice developed over the early years. Love it!

Jgmagoo person below or above joan baez and melanie are two different singers you don't know what your talking about. That is pure natural Melanie style.I only follow melanie safka for 44 years and she blows away joan baez in every aspect .Writing as well as singing. Who are you kidding, my mothers aunt. Go find your self
While Melanie does not "blow Joan Baez away", she is hugely talented in her own right, and I've never understood the Baez comparisons. Other than both singing folkish songs to their own guitar accompaniment, Melanie and Baez sound nothing alike. Baez' voice was more "classically" beautiful, while Melanie's vocals were expressive and vibrato-driven. Both very moving, but in different ways. If I had to compare Melanie with someone, it would be Buffy Sainte Marie, and even then, VERY different.
Sounds to me like she's trying to emulate Joan Baez a little bit on this song with the tremmelo sound....which I don't think is that becoming for her.
Check out "Melanie Dust In The Wind" No tremmelo...and an absolute masterpiece!
she is sooo good looking
